Lufthansa has offered to buy an initial minority stake in ITA, Italy's state-owned successor to Alitalia, it said on Wednesday. "This may be the next step in European airline consolidation," said Bernstein analyst Alex Irving, citing Portugal's national airline, TAP, as a prime target. Lufthansa, Air-France KLM (AIRF.PA) and British Airways owner IAG (ICAG.L) are potential buyers, analysts said. "At the same time, however, we closely monitor consolidation in the European airline market." Michael O'Leary, the outspoken CEO of fellow low-cost airline Ryanair (RYA.I), also weighed in with his predictions this week.

Arianespace’s Vega C rocket, which carried satellites developed by Airbus, lifted off from its launchpad in French Guiana on Tuesday. Two Earth-imagery satellites developed by aerospace company Airbus SE were lost after the rocket they were on failed shortly after liftoff Tuesday night. Arianespace SAS, the company operating the rocket, said Wednesday that an engine on part of the vehicle had experienced a drop in pressure. That prompted officials overseeing safety for the flight to send a command to destroy the vehicle, in keeping with standard operating procedures.
President Caputova will dismiss the cabinet but ask it to stay on until she at some point appoints a new one. SaS joined a leftist opposition party in bringing the no-confidence vote, accusing the government of not helping people cope with the higher energy costs. The political clash has prevented support for Heger's 2023 budget plan, which includes spending to offset energy prices. Sulik told a televised briefing SaS wanted to back the creation of a new government and did not support calling early elections. The poll-leading opposition party Hlas, though, called early elections the only option.
LONDON, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Britain's defence ministry announced on Thursday an inquiry into allegations that its special forces carried out dozens of extrajudicial killings during night raids in Afghanistan. The announcement follows a report by BBC television's Panorama programme in July that alleged soldiers from the elite Special Air Service (SAS) had killed 54 people in suspicious circumstances. The inquiry, which will be led by senior judge Lord Justice Haddon-Cave, would also look at the adequacy of the response to the allegations, the MoD said. "The UK's armed forces rightly hold themselves to the highest possible operational standards," Murrison said. "Operations must be conducted within the clear boundaries of the law and credible allegations against our forces must always be investigated thoroughly."
A blind couple and their one-year-old daughter were twice blocked from boarding planes in Greece. The family finally returned home to Iceland one week later than planned on their third attempt. He believes that the presence of his one-year-old daughter might have concerned the airline. The couple said that they intend to take legal action against Scandinavian Airlines. Scandinavian Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
SAF accounted for only 0.5% of aviation fuel in 2021, but many airlines have a target of 10% by 2030 and the industry's goal of "net zero" emissions by 2050 relies on SAF accounting for 65% of fuel. The corporate sector interest could build momentum for the SAF industry to scale up given businesses account for around 20% of air travel globally and 30% in Europe, said Denise Auclair, corporate travel campaign manager at European non-governmental organisation Transport & Environment. 'GREEN PREMIUM'Buying SAF is more costly than purchasing emissions offsets but experts say it can play a key role in reducing travel emissions alongside switches to video-conferencing and cleaner alternatives like rail. "They contract with us, they pay for the cost premium of sustainable aviation fuel over the conventional jet fuel, and then enable us to deliver sustainable aviation fuel for our partner airlines to consume," he said. Companies are able to contract directly with airlines, travel agencies like American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) (GBTG.N) and fuel providers like Neste as they look to claim SAF credits and avoid pitfalls like double claiming.
STOCKHOLM, Nov 30 (Reuters) - Crisis-hit Scandinavian airline SAS (SAS.ST) on Wednesday reported a much deeper loss in its August-October quarter than last year and said it will take slightly longer than previously expected to complete its bankruptcy protection process. SAS, whose biggest owners are the Swedish and Danish governments, said in a statement it aimed to complete its bankruptcy protection process during the second half of 2023. SAS hopes to cut costs by 7.5 billion crowns, raise at least 9.5 billion in new equity and convert more than 20 billion of debt into equity as part of its rescue plan. SAS, which formerly earned a large share of its profits from business travel, is refocusing towards leisure. Its full-year pretax loss adjusted for items affecting comparability widened to 7.94 bllion despite full-year sales doubling to 31.8 billion crowns, in line with guidance given in September.

Amundi, which is majority owned by the bank, last month posted net outflows of 12.9 billion euros in the third quarter, hurt by weak markets and concern about the economic outlook following the war in Ukraine. But Credit Agricole, like most European banks, managed to take advantage of rising interest rates to post a strong increase in corporate loans, up by 15.4%, and consumer finance, which rose 12.6% in the quarter. Capital markets and investment banking revenues, which have boosted rivals as they benefited from market volatility, fell by 5.7% in the quarter however. "Globally we have a lower risk profile than rivals, which means we may profit less from volatility," said Credit Agricole deputy CEO Xavier Musca. The bank said that would not increase the holding company's stake in Credit Agricole above 65%.

KYIV, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Ukraine's government has given the green light for financial advisory firm Lazard to advise state energy company Naftogaz on its debt restructuring plan. A resolution published on the government portal late on Wednesday said the cabinet had decided to "approve the conclusion of an agreement between the joint-stock company ... Naftogaz of Ukraine and the company Lazard Frères SAS". Naftogaz is stuck in default after bondholders of two of its three main international bonds refused to sign up to a debt payment deferral plan offered this year. The final terms to be offered to bondholders are to be sent to the government for approval. The government resolution gave Naftogaz two weeks to do so.
Credit Agricole Q3 profit beats forecasts on corporate loan growth

Credit Agricole joined French and European peers in booking higher-than-expected third-quarter profit, driven mainly by corporate loans and consumer finance which more than offset withdrawals at asset manager Amundi and lower trading revenue. Net income came in at 1.35 billion euros ($1.35 billion), down 3.6% from a year earlier but above a 1.17 billion euro average forecast in a Refinitiv analyst poll, helped by one-off items such as the sale of the La Medicale insurance business. But Credit Agricole, like most European banks, managed to take advantage of rising interest rates to post a strong increase in corporate loans, up by 15.4%, and consumer finance, which rose 12.6%. "Globally we have a lower risk profile than rivals, which means we may profit less from volatility," said Credit Agricole Deputy Chief Executive Xavier Musca. It said it would not increase its stake in Credit Agricole beyond 65%.

During the Vietnam War, US troops were supported by forces from several allied countries. The role of the Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) and the New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS) was especially notable. From 1966 to 1971, these two special-operations units deployed a small number of commandos to support conventional forces in Vietnam. Gradually, however, they shifted to a more aggressive stance and started going after high-value North Vietnamese and Viet Cong targets in ambushes and direct-action operations. Special operators from the two countries had fought with the British against Communist insurgents in Malaya and Borneo.

It’s just 40 minutes from the popular beaches of Taormina, which are flooded with “White Lotus” fans this summer. America’s relationship to gun ownership is unique, and its gun culture is a global outlier. It is then unsurprising that the US has more deaths from gun violence than any other developed country per capita. A 2019 study published in the British Medical Journal found that US states with more permissive gun laws and greater gun ownership had higher rates of mass shootings. A decade of gun violence, culminating with the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, prompted the Australian government to take action. Many countries around the world have been able to tackle gun violence.
