SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Workers in California will soon receive a minimum of five days of paid sick leave annually, instead of three, under a new law Gov. The law, which takes effect in January, also increases the amount of sick leave workers can carry over into the following year. “Too many folks are still having to choose between skipping a day’s pay and taking care of themselves or their family members when they get sick,” Newsom said in a statement announcing his action. Newsom already signed a law to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 an hour. Assemblymember Gail Pellerin, a Democrat from Santa Cruz who authored the law and is a former local elections official, said the law creates necessary guardrails around elections.

CNN —All models of Onewheel electric skateboards are being recalled after the maker Future Motion received reports of four deaths of users between 2019 and 2021 and multiple reports of serious injuries. Santa Cruz-based Future Motion initially refused to agree to a recall in November, when the Consumer Product Safety Commission first warned customers to stop using the skateboards. The firmware update will roll out in a few weeks, and is only available for Onewheel GT, Pint X, Pint, and XR products, not original Onewheel and Onewheel+ skateboards, the company said. Future Motion and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission encouraged riders to wear personal safety equipment. CNN has reached out to Future Motion for comment.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The roof of a church collapsed in northern Mexico during a Mass on Sunday, and rescue teams rushed to begin searching for about 30 people believed to be trapped in the rubble, authorities said. The Tamaulipas state police said that about 100 people were in the church at the time of the collapse and that about 30 were still inside. Tamaulipas state police said units of the National Guard, the state police and state civil defense office and the Red Cross were at the scene seeking to rescue any victims. SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Spain, July 27 (Reuters) - Firefighters have "stabilised" a wildfire that ravaged 400 hectares of woodland in the centre of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, local emergency services chief Federico Grillo said on Thursday. Three roads were closed off while emergency services deployed nine aircraft and 250 firefighters to contain the blaze. "Unfortunately, a house has burned down on Pico de las Nieves," Grillo said on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Earlier in July, 4,000 people were evacuated from their homes on the island of La Palma, near Gran Canaria, as a forest fire burned out of control while countries across Europe have struggled to cope with wildfires amidst a heatwave. Microsoft announced this week that it's replacing Calibri, its default font for the last 15 years, with a new font, Aptos.
