“Extreme conditions like those are bound to test the limits of even the highest-performing products," Certor Sports, which makes the VICIS ZERO2 helmet that Mahomes was wearing, said in a statement Wednesday. “I’m sure it had to do with it being really cold,” Mahomes said afterward, “but yeah, I didn’t know that happened in the moment. “VICIS helmets are extensively tested in high-impact conditions across a range of temperatures,” the company said. Mahomes said he'd never had a helmet shatter on him — “It was a first for me,” he said. Mahomes initially played on with the broken helmet before officials intervened and made him get a backup from the sideline.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Russell Westbrook got into an extended verbal exchange with a fan late in the Los Angeles Clippers’ loss to the Denver Nuggets on Monday night. In December 2022, when Westbrook played for the Los Angeles Lakers, he had another angry exchange with a fan sitting courtside at a game in Milwaukee. “Respect is a big thing that I value so the moment that line gets crossed I won’t allow it no more,” Westbrook said Monday.

BALTIMORE (AP) — A federal judge has denied a compassionate release request filed by a former Baltimore police officer convicted in 2018 as part of the department’s Gun Trace Task Force corruption scandal. Daniel Hersl, the oldest member of the deeply corrupt and now-disbanded Baltimore police unit, was sentenced to 18 years behind bars after a jury found him guilty of racketeering and robbery. Last month, he filed the request for release, saying he was recently diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes, liver, lungs and more. He said a prison doctor concluded he has less than 18 months to live, and asked for home detention. Hersl, 53, was one of eight indicted members of the once-lauded Gun Trace Task Force, which was created to get illegal guns off the streets of a city plagued by violent crime.

Russell was handed a five-second penalty for a lap 25 clash with Red Bull's triple world champion and eventual winner Max Verstappen that demoted the Briton from fourth at the finish to eighth. Ferrari ended up scoring 16 points more than Mercedes and closed the gap to four with just one race remaining in Abu Dhabi next weekend. "Just another massively missed opportunity this weekend," Russell told Sky Sports television. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said it was game over once Russell incurred the penalty but remained optimistic for the finale.

The Broncos started their go-ahead drive from their 25 with 3:17 remaining after Joseph's field goal made it 20-15. That kick capped a 7-minute, 20-second drive by the Vikings that featured a fake punt from their own 30. Wilson drove the Broncos 75 yards in 10 plays to give Denver, which trailed 17-9 after three quarters, its first lead since 3-0. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ferrari rebounded from a disastrous first day of the Las Vegas Grand Prix with a Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. sweep of Friday night qualifying. After the qualifying run, Sainz was struggling to balance the showmanship of F1's first visit to Las Vegas in 41 years and the damage to the sporting element of the biggest spectacle on the series' 22-race calendar. F1 and owner Liberty Media have spent $500 million on the race that uses the Strip and incorporates several Las Vegas landmarks. “But I see the race as a very good opportunity for F1 and I think F1, it's a good thing that's in Las Vegas and I am enjoying coming to Las Vegas. Getting a second chance after missing wide right from 41 yards thanks to Buffalo being flagged for too many players, Lutz connected on a 36-yard field goal attempt as time expired to secure a 24-22 win over the sloppy, turnover-prone Bills on Monday night. The Broncos (4-5) have won three straight and four of six since a 70-20 loss at Miami. Lutz made four field goals and Javonte Williams scored on a 3-yard run. Allen’s second interception came in the final minute of the first half, and on the first play from scrimmage after Lutz hit a 49-yard field goal to put Denver up 12-8. Russell's Brazil retirement no problem for last two races

Nov 8 (Reuters) - George Russell's engine-related retirement from last Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix will have no knock-on effects for the last two races of the Formula One season, Mercedes said in a team debrief on Wednesday. The Briton was retired at Interlagos as a precaution after rising temperatures in the power unit risked failure and wider damage to the car. Mercedes head of trackside performance Riccardo Musconi said Russell was always scheduled to have a different power unit for Las Vegas and the Abu Dhabi season-ender. "He will be on a different power unit for the final two races so there is no issue from that point of view." Musconi said Hamilton's disqualification from second place in last month's U.S. Grand Prix in Austin for excessive wear of the under-car plank might have contributed to the lack of pace, without being the determining factor.

___The generational shift at quarterback in the NFL reached a new milestone last week. This was the first time since Week 6 of the 2002 season that no quarterback born in the 1980s took the field. That raised the total of rookie starting QBs this season to nine, tying the non-replacement record set in 2019. The youth movement at quarterback has played a role in the struggles on offense across the league in the first half of the season, with scoring at its lowest mark through nine weeks since 2007. November 1 - While the Los Angeles Lakers are, without question, the most popular NBA team in Southern California, the Los Angeles Clippers continue to develop into the homegrown squad. With the Lakers set to play host, the team's 12 championship banners from their Los Angeles tenure will hang over the proceedings -- the titles earning fans from multiple generations. The Clippers, though, are an assemblage of local talent, with the pending trade for 10-time All-Star James Harden only adding to that collection. Harden, a product of Artesia High School in nearby Lakewood, Calif., joins three other All-Stars from the Los Angeles area: Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Russell Westbrook. Despite the Lakers' pedigree, the Clippers have gotten the most from the teams' recent matchups.
