Picture Books That See Shadows in a New Light
  + stars: | 2024-07-19 | by ( Leigh Ann Henion | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Which is why it’s so refreshing to find two picture books that present shadows for what they are: the non-nefarious interplay of light and dark. Ultimately, her shadow is joined in a meadow by those of two other children and a dog (the four of them now “friendly” shadows). It is in the presence of harsh light — rather than the depths of darkness — that the story turns somber. It was a thinking shadow, a shadow you could feel but not see. Feng’s soft-lined illustrations visually articulate the essence of Handy’s “stretching shadows,” easing day into night.

The recent tech sell-off is a "golden buying opportunity," according to Wedbush. The midweek rout in tech stocks was partly triggered by Trump's hawkish comments about Taiwan. But solid earnings results in the second-quarter should spark a rebound in the tech trade, Ives said. Principal Asset Management's Todd Jablonski said this tech sell-off is simply a small blip in the grand scheme of things.

Jerome H. Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, avoided sending a clear signal about when the central bank would begin to cut interest rates even as he welcomed a recent cool-down in inflation. “Today I’m not going to be sending any signals one way or the other on any particular meeting,” Mr. Powell said while speaking at the Economic Club of Washington on Monday. “Just to ruin the fun right at the beginning.”The Fed’s chair was speaking after several inflation reports in a row suggested that price increases were moderating in earnest, a development that had spurred some economists to think that it could make sense for officials to cut interest rates sooner rather than later. The Fed meets at the end of July and then again in September, and investors have been largely expecting that officials will begin to lower borrowing costs at the September meeting. Economists at Goldman Sachs wrote in a research note on Monday that cutting rates this month could be appropriate, given how much inflation had come down.

When you think of advocating for yourself in the workplace, you probably imagine asking for a promotion. Part of self-advocacy, though, is learning how to say "no" to tasks you don't have the bandwidth for. In her new book "Smart, Not Loud," Jessica Chen outlines how you can push back against accepting more work, even if you're uncomfortable saying "no." "In the process of always saying yes, we sacrifice our time and take on work that does not really help us," she writes. In her book, she offers up a formula that can help you turn down work in a way that doesn't ruin your workplace relationships.

Welcome to summer! Body-shaming is everywhere

Comfort and connectionIn addition to all the messages about what people should look like, the physical sensations of summer often bring increased attention to people’s bodies, Campos said. For a better relationship with your body this summer, Campos recommends finding ways to connect with yourself in more enjoyable ways. “That is a connected moment where I can say, ‘This feels good in my body,’” Campos said. “When somebody’s having a hard body image day … I want them to check in about what else is going on,” she said. “You might feel better, but it doesn’t actually change anything in your body.

The turmoil surrounding Biden’s future is creating a grim mood inside the White House, CNN’s MJ Lee reported. • If that happens, would senior party leaders be willing to go to the president and argue that his position is unsustainable? There is an almost surreal quality to the frenzied political debate as Biden digs in. Jamaica was hammered by a surge of water, damaging winds and flooding rainfall on Wednesday as Hurricane Beryl delivered a glancing blow when it passed just south of the coast, claiming at least one life on the island. The effects of the storm, a Category 4, struck Jamaica just days after it swept through the eastern Caribbean, killing at least seven other people. Ahead of the hurricane, Jamaica closed its airports and issued an evacuation order for low-lying and flood-prone areas. The storm was the strongest to approach the island in over a decade. The last time a major hurricane passed within 70 miles of Jamaica was in 2007, and it has been even longer since one made landfall.

Japan is one of the leading producers of shiitake mushrooms. In the US, indoor-grown shiitakes sell for upwards of $8 a pound, while forest-grown shiitakes have commanded a much higher price, up to $18 a pound. The most premium shiitake mushrooms are called white flower shiitake, and the forest-grown versions can sell for over $160 a pound. White flower shiitakes have noticeable white cracks on the caps and a strong flavor, but even just a few drops of rain can ruin them. Here's why forest-grown shiitake mushrooms are so expensive.

AdvertisementThis was Belgium at their finest, and Romania raised the level of their game in the second half to try to equalise. If Austria wanted to have any chance of qualifying to the round of 16 they had to beat Poland in their second group game. The wide areas were where Ukraine focused their attacks, and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s square pass to Mykola Shaparenko made it 1-1 in the second half. However, Samet Akaydin and Altay Bayindir’s mishap on the second goal decreased Turkey’s probability of a comeback. More off-ball runs in the second half led to the third, and by then the match was done and dusted.

London CNN —Private schools in Britain may conjure up images of rolling lawns, pristine tennis courts, and dormitory rooms, serving as gilded hothouses of privilege. Not every private school is “synonymous with privilege and great wealth,” argues Sue Hannam, headteacher at Lichfield Cathedral School, a private school in central England. About 620,000 children are currently enrolled in private schools in Britain, equivalent to almost 6% of all school children, according to the Independent Schools Council. Hodge at the Education Policy Institute noted that, accounting for inflation, private school fees had risen by as much as 25% since 2010. Still, a demographic shift means state schools may “welcome” the influx, Sibieta wrote last year.
