Read previewIn December 2023, while there were still around six remaining GOP presidential hopefuls vying for the party's nomination, the chair of the Republican National Committee insisted the party wasn't picking favorites. Appearing on Fox News on Tuesday after former President Donald Trump won the New Hampshire state primary, she said that after "looking at the math and the path going forward," she didn't think Haley could win. Advertisement"Chairwoman McDaniel was stating the fact that the primary election currently favors President Trump," RNC Spokesperson Anna Kelly told Business Insider. Before the New Hampshire primary even finished, the chairs of the National Republican Congressional Committee and National Congressional Senate Committee each released statements backing Trump, calling him the "presumptive nominee." Haley’s campaign leaned into those attacks Thursday, releasing T-shirts emblazoned with the words“Barred. “We need to unite around our eventual nominee, which is Donald Trump,” Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Tuesday on Fox News. In the final days before the GOP primary there, Trump paraded a series of South Carolina Republican officials onstage at his rallies, including Gov. Worst of all, no one returned my calls.”Fundraising dried up, and Haley’s campaign directed most of its funds to TV. “Any other person probably would have just quit and caved in there, but she knew that South Carolina needed her,” Ballentine said.

And there is precedent for the committee declaring a candidate the presumptive nominee before winning the 1,215 requisite delegates to clinch the nomination. In May 2016, then-RNC Chairman Reince Priebus declared Trump the presumptive nominee before he had the appropriate share of delegates wrapped up. Despite losing both the Iowa and New Hampshire contests to Trump, Haley has argued that her performance — outlasting all the other Trump rivals — shows the strength of her candidacy. Neither the Haley campaign nor the Trump campaign returned messages seeking comment on Thursday. “I’ve heard a lot of elected officials in the Republican Party, including the RNC chair, say, ‘We need to rally around a candidate.’ That this is going to be our candidate.

CNN —The Republican presidential debates have so far produced two big winners – one who will be center stage Wednesday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the fourth GOP matchup, and another who won’t be there at all. The good news for Haley is that she is now running neck-and-neck for second place with the formerly formidable Florida Gov. In skipping the debates, Trump wagered that without his oversized presence, his opponents would primarily train their fire on each other. With Trump absent, Haley, who thus far has mostly eluded frontal attacks, is more likely to get frontrunner treatment from her rivals on Wednesday night. Chris Christie, the most outspoken critic of Trump in the Republican field, also hopes to make New Hampshire a breakthrough moment.

Even if he were to be convicted in Washington or another trial, top party leaders and many voters have indicated they would stand by Trump anyway. And Trump and his allies are pushing to dismiss and delay the trials and have worked with state parties to craft rules favorable to him. The RNC rules don’t include any provisions specific to the unprecedented scenario unfolding. And, yes, if they choose Donald Trump -- the voters are looking at this, and they think there is a two-tiered system of justice. And unlike in 2016, when a large faction within the party resisted Trump's candidacy, the Republican Party has transformed under Trump.

WASHINGTON — The Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday the dates and locations of three presidential debates for the 2024 general election. The lone vice presidential debate will take place at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 25. The Biden campaign declined to comment on the announcement. He has bashed the Commission on Presidential Debates, claiming it is "very biased" and "stacked with Trump Haters & Never Trumpers." “I’m sick of Republicans losing,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said. DeSantis has long contrasted his successful re-election last year in Florida with Republican setbacks in the last few elections, including Trump’s loss in 2020. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy blamed Ronna McDaniel, the chair of the Republican National Committee, instead of Trump, for the party’s recent performance. After circling each other for half the debate, they finally went on the attack over the other's dealings with China. The DeSantis campaign, meanwhile, has tried to attack Haley on that issue, accusing her of welcoming a Chinese company into her state.

On Social Security, both Haley and Christie said the retirement age needed to be raised for younger workers, though neither would state a specific age. Christie also called for means-testing, saying rich people did not need Social Security as a safety net. "As governor of Florida, I know a few people on Social Security," DeSantis quipped.

That could make it difficult for the party to deliver a coherent message on early voting. In an advertisement that aired during the first Republican presidential debate in August, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said into the camera: "When Republicans vote early, we win." With Trump railing against the practice, Democrats have increased their edge in early voting. In 2022, that gap widened, with Democrats accounting for 42.5% of early ballots and Republicans 33.8%. But Youngkin advisers said their data showed the early vote campaign had brought in ballots from low-propensity voters as well.

McDaniel had told Trump personally that the debates would start in August, according to two sources familiar with the conversation. In a three-way race, Gallego is ahead in Noble's polling, with 34% support, compared to 26% for Sinema and 25% for Lake. Donald Trump 's campaign is calling on the Republican National Committee to cancel all remaining presidential primary debates, saying the RNC must instead “refocus its manpower” on defeating Joe Biden next year. In a statement late Monday, top Trump advisers also repeated debunked falsehoods about election fraud, claiming without evidence that Democrats are working to steal the 2024 election. Trump has maintained that the 2020 election was stolen, despite multiple legal cases, investigations and his own attorney general finding no fraud. In their statement, senior campaign advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita say the November debate in Miami and all future debates should be canceled.
