CNN —Scientists have uncovered communities of animals such as tube worms and snails living in volcanic caves beneath the seafloor, revealing a previously unknown but thriving ecosystem. An eelpout swims by a tower of tube worms at the Tica Vent, a hydrothermal vent site on the East Pacific Rise. Tube worms are immobile creatures that settle and grow in one place without moving, like barnacles. A large cluster of stationary tube worms thrives at the Fava Flow Suburbs, a site on the East Pacific Rise. Researchers use a robotic arm to lift a small portion of volcanic rock to verify that life exists beneath the ocean floor.

We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages

Without laborious renaming, everything behind those links — billions of them, a decade of digital content — will become inaccessible. We're about to enter the Digital Dark Ages. The Department of Veterans Affairs is legally required to preserve all medical records for 75 years after the death of a vet — but it's having problems, in part because of a balky digital records system. "Over the long term, you can't preserve a digital object in its original form," says Manoff, the former MIT librarian. The Dark Ages, as historians used to call the early centuries of medieval Europe, lasted for 500 years.

DETROIT — The Michigan Senate race is one of several that could help determine control of the chamber and decide the presidential contest this fall. That includes researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who are developing a set of wearable robotic limbs to help astronauts recover from falls. When the wearer falls over, an extra pair of limbs can extend out to provide leverage to help them stand, conserving energy for other tasks. The study found that falls were more common when, like Duke, astronauts were collecting samples or using tools – tasks that Artemis astronauts are likely to undertake. The trio of blue wall states offer promise to Vice President Harris and former President Trump. She's worked to rally union workers — a key voting bloc — around her campaign. But Loge also pointed to a newly-released Emerson College poll, which showed that Harris' union support varied by state. In the Quinnipiac poll, Michigan voters gave Trump an eight-point edge (53% to 45%) on the economy. And she's aiming to win over voters — especially union workers — in smaller cities where Trump found success in 2016.

In today’s edition, politics reporters Matt Dixon and Allan Smith explore why Donald Trump is set to campaign in heavily Democratic states in the final stretch of the 2024 race. Trump plans rallies in solidly Democratic states in the race’s final weeksBy Matt Dixon and Allan SmithGet ready for Donald Trump’s blue state extravaganza. With less than four weeks until Election Day, the Republican presidential nominee is scheduled to hold rallies in staunchly Democratic states he has virtually no chance of winning. President Joe Biden won those states by an average of 20 points in 2020, with his 13-point Colorado win the closest. “Choosing high-impact settings makes it so the media can’t look away and refuse to cover the issues and the solutions President Trump is offering,” a senior Trump campaign adviser said of the strategy.

A law professor said the ruling shows how antitrust law is used against Big Tech companies. Management and law experts told Business Insider the ruling highlights how antitrust law is being used against Big Tech companies — and could cost Google billions of dollars in lost revenue. Historically, he said, liberal judges tended to favor antitrust law more than conservative ones. When Epic Games' case against Apple was similarly appealed, the Supreme Court denied requests to hear it, leaving Apple with its partial victory. Americans for Prosperity Action, a super PAC affiliated with the Koch network of political advocacy groups, is launching a slate of new ads backing Republicans across multiple Senate battleground races, spending $8.75 million on a campaign focused largely on issues like the economy, inflation, and immigration. With party control of both chambers of Congress up for grabs in November, the group has spent about $60 million on election advertising already in 2024, according to FEC filings. Americans for Prosperity Action backed Nikki Haley for president in 2023 but has focused its efforts since then on promoting conservative down-ballot candidates through digital advertising, door-knocking, phone-banking and election mailers. The group is not investing in efforts to promote Donald Trump this fall. It has contacted more than 9 million voters about congressional races nationwide this election cycle.

As state lawmakers have introduced hundreds of bills targeting transgender people, particularly youths, over the last few years, Americans have rarely been able to hear from those most directly affected — trans youths themselves. They wanted to ensure the group was diverse because the trans kids and their families who are often featured in national reporting have been predominantly white. “American Teenager,” which debuts Tuesday, also features religious diversity, challenging the common misconception that being trans conflicts with people’s religious faith, Lang said. For example, Ruby Carnes, who was 19 when Lang spent two weeks with her in Houston, attends an Episcopalian church with her family who identify as Evangelical Christians, Lang said. Some of the young people Lang spent time with describe how gender-affirming medical care has affected their lives.

Head coach Robert Saleh of the New York Jets celebrates with Aaron Rodgers #8 after a touchdown against the New England Patriots during the second quarter in the game at MetLife Stadium on September 19, 2024 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The New York Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh, according to multiple published reports on Tuesday, following the team's disappointing start with Aaron Rodgers back at the helm — and amid seeming tensions between the coach and the star quarterback. Saleh, who was hired by the Jets in 2021, finished his Jets head coaching record at 20-26. The Jets committed five false start penalties in the Denver loss and Saleh said it could be linked to the tricky cadence Rodgers employs when barking out pre-snap signals. And in the win over New England, Rodgers appeared to rebuff an attempted hug from Saleh after a touchdown.

None of the studies noted improvements in mental health care or declines in suicide attempts or deaths after the warnings were implemented. While an increase in antidepressant use occurred before the FDA advisory, there were abrupt and sustained declines in use — ranging from 20% to 50% — after the warnings. Three studies reported increases in psychotropic drug poisonings, which suggest suicide attempts, and in suicide deaths among children. However, “the study convincingly suggests that the Black Box warning may have made at least some providers and families anxious about treating adolescents with antidepressants,” Fortuna said. Every young person differs in the level of risk, needs and circumstances, Fortuna said, and antidepressants can be lifesaving.

Former President Barack Obama is wading into the Senate race in Michigan, endorsing Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and starring in a new ad for her as some voters start to receive absentee ballots in the critical state. It’s the first time this election that voters will see a Senate ad from Obama as Democrats try to keep hold of the chamber, where they hold a 51-49 advantage. In the new ad, called “Make You Proud,” Obama underscores Slotkin’s national security experience before she represented Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. “In the Situation Room, Elissa delivered national security briefings on some of the toughest issues we were dealing with. That’s why I sent Elissa to negotiate on my behalf because she understood when to compromise and when to stand firm,” Obama says in the ad.

CNN —Megan Rathmell thought she’d bombed her job interview earlier this year, assuming her nervousness and lack of preparation had cost her the opportunity. SDI Productions/E+/Getty ImagesWhat Rathmell learned from her boss mirrors what hiring managers say: Some Gen Z college graduates are unprepared for job interviews or behave unprofessionally during job interviews. Some people think they can just wing a job interview, said Stacie Haller, chief career advisor at ResumeBuilder. How to handle the actual job interviewDressing professionally for both in-person and virtual interviews is important regardless of whether it’s for a fast-food restaurant, retail store or office job, experts said. When you’re given the chance to ask questions, ask what you’ve prepared.
