The Bavarians have won the last 11 consecutive league crowns but they needed a Borussia Dortmund slip-up on the final matchday last season to retain it. A 3-0 loss to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup at home on Saturday left Tuchel, who took over from Julian Nagelsmann late last season, fuming. Kane's German debut, with a low-key substitute appearance in the second half of their Super Cup loss, did little to dampen Bayern fans' enthusiasm and expectations. Their Super Cup win over Bayern gave them an early shot of confidence but they will have to repeat it again on Saturday when they face ambitious Leverkusen in their season opener. "We can improve many things but this obviously did give us a push," said Leipzig coach Marco Rose of the win against Bayern.

MUNICH, Germany, Aug 13 (Reuters) - England captain Harry Kane left boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur after 19 years to join European powerhouse Bayern Munich in search of titles, the Bundesliga's record signing said on Sunday. Despite a stellar scoring record he has failed to win any domestic or international titles with Spurs. "I wanted to play internationally, in the Champions League, and fight for titles every year. "I needed to be playing in the Champions League, trying to win titles every year. "We want to win the title, win the Cup and try to win the Champions League as well."

MUNICH, Germany, Aug 12 (Reuters) - England captain Harry Kane has joined Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur on a four-year deal, the German club said on Saturday. They did not disclose the transfer fee, which media reports have put at around 100 million euros ($109 million). That would be a Bundesliga record, smashing the 80 million euros paid by Bayern to sign Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid in 2019. "The fans can look forward to Harry Kane and the new season," said club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen. Bayern kick off their Bundesliga season against Werder Bremen next week.

The U.S. government has identified three American citizens held in Iran — Siamak Namazi, Emad Shargi and Morad Tahbaz. NBC News first reported on the prisoner exchange negotiations in February. The families of the Americans held in Iran say their loved ones are "hostages" taken captive on false charges and used as bargaining chips by the government. And Siamak Namazi has been held prisoner in Iran for nearly eight years, longer than any of the other current American detainees.

A blast shook the Russian town of Sergiev Posad on Wednesday, injuring at least 45 people, according to local authorities. The explosion occurred at a factory 50 kilometers northeast of Moscow that produces optical equipment for industry and healthcare, as well as for Russian security forces. The Russian state news agency TASS reported that the explosion happened in a warehouse containing pyrotechnic equipment. Barcelona bank on Gundogan, Lewandowski experience
  + stars: | 2023-08-07 | by ( Fernando Kallas | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BARCELONA, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Barcelona claimed their 27th LaLiga title and first for four years last season led by coach Xavi Hernandez, relying on a mixture of young talent and seasoned veterans like striker Robert Lewandowski who was the league's top scorer. They recruited experienced midfielder Ikay Gundogan, who captained Manchester City to the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble last season, ending a successful seven-year stint in England during which he won 12 major trophies. Gundogan will help mentor a young Barca squad as they try to retain the LaLiga crown and get back to winning ways in the Champions League after years of European disappointments. A Barcelona court has agreed to take on the case and UEFA has provisionally cleared the club to compete in this season's Champions League despite ongoing investigations. These formal job-training programs allow potential workers to bypass traditional requirements such as college degrees and directly enter the workforce. And that's why we've been advocating funding for training organizations or what we call apprenticeship intermediaries, to work with companies to help them get started." Last summer the White House passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which grants funding to several industries that rely heavily on skilled labor like infrastructure, manufacturing and more. As the U.S. economy faces skill shortages in a wide range of industries, these on-the-job training programs could become essential to the new American economy. Watch the video above to learn more about America's need for more highly skilled and trained employees and how the changing apprenticeship model could help fill that gap.

With the demand for electric batteries sky-high, mining companies are moving to the salt flats of the Andes, where over half of the world's known lithium reserves are stored. In June 2023, Bolivia signed deals with Chinese and Russian companies to massively expand its lithium mining sector. But locals are concerned about the possible impact on their scarce water supplies and fear they will lose out in the 'white gold' rush occurring in their own backyard. These regions are among the driest on Earth and have been subjected to a megadrought for more than a decade — so every drop of water removed for mining is a cause for concern.

As in previous years, the world of investments has continued to see several frauds and scandals come to light in 2023. Some of the more peculiar cases involved missing silver coins, untraceable crypto, and bags filled with stones instead of nickel. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalyis has sounded the alarm on a possible inside-job by members of staff – linking the disappearance of its founder with the missing coins. London Metal Exchange-approved contracts are regarded as the gold standard for metal investors and this mix-up called the security of the prestigious market into question. The sun’s activity is peaking sooner than expected

Every 11 years or so, the sun experiences periods of low and high solar activity, which is associated with the amount of sunspots on its surface. Over the course of a solar cycle, the sun will transition from a calm to an intense and active period. During the peak of activity, called solar maximum, the sun’s magnetic poles flip. A solar activity spikeThe current solar cycle, known as Solar Cycle 25, has been full of activity, more so than expected. The solar storms generated by the sun can affect electric power grids, GPS and aviation, and satellites in low-Earth orbit.

Organized retail crime is rising in Wichita, Kansas, according to a report by CNN. "To see this much retail crime, it's shocking," Captain Casey Slaughter, who leads Wichita Police Department's property crimes bureau, told CNN. Organized retail crime at retailers was 26.5% higher in 2021 than in the previous year, according to a study by the National Retail Federation. Target said organized retail crime has led to more than $400 million in profit losses in 2022. Local crime officials say that drugs, and in particular fentanyl, a synthetic drug like heroin but 50 times more potent, appear to be driving a lot of the retail crime.

The destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam emptied a reservoir that supplied water to much of southern Ukraine. Thousands were forced to flee as water flooded parts of Kherson, damaging wildlife, washing away property, and contaminating drinking water — a catastrophe that could be felt for years. But the biggest effect may be transforming southern Ukraine's fertile farmland into a desert.

Lengeling told Doty it "felt like we got punched in the gut, quite frankly" when he recently learned prosecutors were asking that Miller spend a year in prison for the penny stock scheme. In addition to his prison term, which Miller is expected to start serving in August, Doty sentenced Miller to two years of supervised release after he completes his time locked up. Miller and Jaberian, as well as an unidentified person related to Miller, became the nominal CEOs and presidents of the targeted companies, prosecutors say. Miller voluntarily dropped a suit related to efforts to take over New World Gold soon after CNBC reported his involvement with that company. Doty sentenced him on May 10 to two years of probation.
Such has been the Blaugrana’s dominance this season, Xavi’s side clinched the trophy with four games still remaining and his iteration will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest defensive teams in La Liga history. With only 13 goals conceded so far this season, Xavi’s Barcelona is set to obliterate that record. “Not only for me, but for the club and for all Barcelona fans it’s very important to win La Liga,” Barça striker Robert Lewandowski told CNN Sport ahead of the match against Espanyol. I think the first round [of fixtures] was very important, we proved that we can think about winning La Liga. Barcelona fans celebrate Sunday's La Liga success -- the club's first league title since the 2018-19 season.
BARCELONA, May 14 (Reuters) - Barcelona claimed their 27th LaLiga title on Sunday after two first-half goals from Robert Lewandowski spurred them to a 4-2 thrashing of city rivals Espanyol. Barca moved to 85 points from 34 matches and extended their lead to an unassailable 14 points over second-placed Real Madrid. Alejandro Balde, who put it on a plate for Lewandowski's opener, scored Barca's second with a tap-in from a Pedri cross in the 20th minute. Lewandowski extended Barca's lead five minutes before the break with another close-range finish from a Raphinha cross. Defender Jules Kounde headed in Barca's fourth in the 53rd minute, before Javi Puado and Joselu scored consolation goals for Espanyol.
The change in mentality may not have sat entirely comfortably with Xavi who said Barca's style was "non-negotiable" when he was appointed coach in November, 2021. A former Barca player himself, Xavi was a symbol of their attacking style as a flamboyant midfielder who won every major title with the club and with Spain. They have conceded 13 goals in the league, by far the best defensive record in Europe’s top five leagues. The trio hold the key to stifling their rival's attacking threats, particularly Araujo who has arguably been Europe's top defender this season. Barcelona were last champions of Spain in 2018-19 when they still had club greats Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez leading their attack up-front.

Moscow has been known to bring out older military equipment from storage to help it prosecute the war in Ukraine, but these are different. The tanks are T-55s, a model first commissioned by the Soviet Union’s Red Army in 1948, shortly after the end of World War II. The true cost of Mexico's Maya Train

Mexico is rushing to complete a new train line around the Yucatan Peninsula that will link tourist resorts with cities and famous Maya sites. But large areas of tropical forest have been cut down, and activists say a unique network of sinkholes called cenotes are also at risk.
The growing popularity of so-called superfoods has led to a boom in production of fruits like avocado, açaí, and durian. Avocado farmers in Mexico are picking up guns to defend themselves from cartels. Açaí berries are painstakingly harvested in the Amazon, where farmers see very little return. And in Malaysia, durian farmers are losing their crops because of a controversial land battle. We journeyed through factory and forest to measure the true cost of our obsession with some of our favorite superfoods.
