With retail investors holding individual stocks for less than a year on average, recent history suggests they could lose money, a Reuters analysis shows. Even institutional investors invited to buy into those 10 IPOs before trading would be down an average of 18%. "For almost all retail investors, buying and holding a low-cost index fund is the best strategy." Arm's debut and an upcoming listing from grocery delivery service Instacart are expected to rejuvenate a lackluster IPO market which has slowed over the past two years due to volatility and economic uncertainty. Instacart will be offering some retail investors a chance to buy into its IPO via underwriter fintech company SoFi, its prospectus said.

Insider Today: IPOs' make-or-break moment

Speaking of fighting, the IPO market has been KO'd since 2022. But that could change with one company's upcoming public debut. Even if it slightly misses those numbers, it'll still be the largest public debut in the US since Rivian's IPO in late 2021. The stock market recovered in record time, but then something else held up IPOs: VC money. Tech has already led the stock market for about a decade — starting when Apple became the biggest company in the world.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Electric vehicle (EV) maker Fisker Inc (FSR.N) unveiled a pickup truck on Thursday, weeks after starting deliveries of its flagship sport utility vehicle (SUV) and as it tackles persistent supply chain issues. Fisker aims to make a mark in the crowded EV market with lower-priced vehicles that still have high-design sensibility. Fisker said Alaska, reservations for which opened on Thursday, would be built on the same platform as its Ocean SUV. Fisker, which uses contract manufacturing for its vehicles, aims to keep cost of production as well as vehicle prices low. While the Ocean SUV starts at $37,499, its smaller Pear SUV, which was also unveiled on Thursday, is priced at $29,990.

The squeeze has already claimed its first casualty in electric truck maker Lordstown Motors (RIDEQ.PK), which filed for bankruptcy in June. Companies including Lucid (LCID.O) and Nikola (NKLA.O) are likely to report another quarter of steep cash burn, as they continue to struggle with production and demand. Nikola, which reiterated a going-concern warning in May, is expected to report a 15% decline in revenue and widening losses on Friday. Its shares have rallied nearly 40% this year as the company attempts to reduce its cash burn with layoffs and the liquidation of a recently acquired battery business. But the company missed its production target in the quarter due to a parts shortage.

Wall Street was happy to see stabilizing growth at the company's cloud unit Amazon Web Services and an uptick in operating margins. With Amazon turning a corner on profitability and AWS revenue growth stable, we think the stock still has more room to run. There's been plenty of debate surrounding AWS lately, with analysts and investors questioning whether revenue growth would decelerate to the high single digits. In North America, second-quarter operating margins improved to 3.9%, compared with 1.2% in the first quarter and a loss of 0.8%) a year ago. Third quarter outlook Amazon followed up the strong second quarter with a very bullish view of the third.

It looks like frunk in the Ford F-150 Lightning, one of the Cybertruck's closest rivals, is way bigger. The Ford F-150 Lightning looks like it has one big edge over Tesla's upcoming Cybertruck. Judging by an unverified photo posted online and first spotted by the EV news website Electrek, the Cybertruck's frunk looks rather tiny, which may disappoint potential buyers. When I drove the F-150 Lighting last year, the truck's frunk easily handled multiple backpacks and duffels that I didn't want sliding around in the bed. Tesla's Texas factory just built its first Cybertruck, and deliveries are set to begin later this year — two years behind schedule.

A Rivian owner said repairs cost $42,000 for his R1T after a fender bender, according to The New York Times. But, after the electric car was taken to a repair shop that was certified to work with Rivian products the cost jumped to $42,000, the publication said. The repair cost over half the starting price of the vehicle. Last year, a study from CCC Intelligent Solutions found that on average EV repairs cost more than repairs for gas-powered cars. Another report from Mitchell that was cited by the Times found that last year EV repairs cost about $2,400 more than fixes for traditional combustion-engine vehicles.

Some 831,000 Rivian options contracts traded on Monday, or two times its average daily volume. Much of the options trading has consisted of investors buying "super short-dated calls," said Daniel Kirsch, head of options at Piper Sandler, adding that the options activity had helped drive Rivian's shares higher. Large purchases of out-of-the-money call options - contracts that are not profitable but stand to gain in value as the stock climbs - can sometimes give an additional lift to a stock's price. The phenomenon has occurred with shares of various companies popular with options buyers over the last few years, from AMC to Tesla. Options on another EV name, Nio Inc , were also actively traded on Monday, making it the 10th most heavily traded individual company in the options market.

Rivian said on Monday it delivered 12,640 vehicles in the second quarter on steady demand from customers, beating market estimates. That result was in line with that of market leader Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), which on Sunday reported record quarterly vehicle deliveries fueled by incentives such as prices cuts and U.S. federal credits. The shares of several EV makers have risen since last week on market expectations of strong quarterly delivery reports. Multiple analysts have raised their price targets for Rivian's stock as the EV maker is seen as having overcome production and supply chain challenges that restricted deliveries. Twenty-three Wall Street brokerages covering Rivian on average recommend buying the stock and set a median price target of $24, Refinitiv data showed.

Rivian stock extended its two-day gain to 19% on Friday after Wedbush increased its price target. Wedbush said Rivian is seeing a turnaround in its EV production and should reach its 50,000 delivery target this year. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives highlighted the company's second-quarter production results of 13,992 vehicles, which helped fuel "an impressive" delivery number of 12,640 vehicles. But according to Ives, the production problems Rivian faced should mostly be over. Another growth driver for Rivian is its partnership with Amazon, which centers around the delivery of 100,000 electric delivery vans by 2030.
