A search and rescue effort was underway in Pennsylvania on Tuesday after a grandmother searching for her cat appears to have plunged into a sinkhole that authorities said was at least 30 feet deep. Rescue efforts continue for a 64-year-old woman who may have fallen into a sinkhole while looking for her missing cat in Unity Township, Westmoreland County. Pennsylvania State Police“It’s a modern shoe — not something you’d find in a coal mine in Marguerite in 1940,” Bacha said, noting the area where the sinkhole was discovered. One of the troopers searching for Pollard nearly fell into the sinkhole, which Limani said was roughly 15 to 20 feet from Pollard's car.

An 8-year-old boy has died after a statue fell on him outside the luxury Arizona Biltmore hotel, the Phoenix Police Department said. The boy's death was announced Monday, five days after he was struck in the head by the statue and hospitalized. Investigators were still trying to determine Tuesday why the statue came apart and how the boy came to be hit by it, but they ruled out foul play, police said. The Biltmore hotel, designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is part of a 39-acre resort spanning the Phoenix Mountain Preserve with views of palm trees and mountain ranges. The statue that collapsed was one of 19 "solemn sprites" sculptures on the grounds of the resort, KVOA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Tuscon, Arizona, reported.

A Central California woman died from rabies after she was bitten by a bat, officials said Tuesday, in the first fatality from the saliva-passed disease in her county in more than 30 years. Seneng, an art teacher, saw the bat in her classroom and didn't think anything of helping it get on its way, Splotch said. "She found it in her classroom before school started and, being a kind-hearted person, she didn't want to hurt any animals. This rabies death was the first in Fresno County since 1992, according to deputy health officer Dr. Trinidad Solis. "Rabies is 100% preventable if individuals seek medical care right away," Solis told reporters last week, shortly after Seneng's passing.

With just weeks until a December 20 spending deadline, negotiators in the House and Senate are trying to find a path forward on yet another short-term spending bill to run into next year — a move that will force incoming President Donald Trump to contend with a funding battle in his first months of his presidency and smack dab in the middle of what is expected to be a contentious confirmation season. The length of that bill as well as what else is included in it is still an active discussion, sources tell CNN. Doing so would help protect the speaker from a right flank that loathes an end-of-year mega spending bill, known as an omnibus. For now, negotiators are trying to nail down an agreement on what else will be included in the package. A top target: A disaster aid package to help areas ravaged by hurricanes this fall — and how big that package will be remains an active discussion.

When the Pittsburgh Steelers made the midseason decision to switch starting quarterbacks, the move wasn’t exactly celebrated. Releasing Wilson cost the Broncos $85 million combined against their salary cap this season and next — the biggest cap penalty ever. The Broncos still had to pay Wilson $39 million this year after they cut him, minus whatever salary he made if he signed with another team. That allowed Pittsburgh to scoop him for a bargain one-year, $1.21 million contract, with Wilson getting $37.79 million more from the Broncos. After having averaged 20.7 points per game with Fields, Pittsburgh is scoring 28.7 with Wilson.

In 2024, the polls conducted in the last two weeks understated his support by 2.4 points on average. First, it’s possible that the polls — once again — failed to capture enough new voters or voters who changed their votes from backing Biden in 2020 to backing Trump in 2024. This is a statistical correction that pollster used this cycle to address the previous undercount of Trump voters. Properly understood, pre-election polls can play an important role in democracy by providing a sense of what outcomes seem possible. Instead, we should consider how we can use pre-election polls in ways that convey the electoral possibilities at play and better describe the uncertainties involved.

HANOI, Vietnam — A court in Vietnam on Tuesday upheld a death sentence for real estate tycoon Truong My Lan after rejecting her appeal against a conviction for embezzlement and bribery in a high-profile $12 billion fraud case, state media reported. Lan, the chairwoman of real estate developer Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group, was sentenced to death in April for her role in what was Vietnam’s biggest financial fraud case on record. The High People’s Court in southern Ho Chi Minh City determined there was no basis to reduce Lan’s death sentence, reported online newspaper VnExpress. Documents reviewed by Reuters showed Vietnam’s central bank had as of April pumped $24 billion in “special loans” into SCB. Apart from the death sentence, Lan was handed a life sentence at a separate trial in October after being found guilty of obtaining property by fraud, money laundering and illegal cross-border money transfers.

A 30-year-old Hawaii woman at the center of a missing persons search in Los Angeles willfully crossed into Mexico, seemingly as part of her desire to "disconnect," police said Monday. He said that detectives can't say they're "100% right" about their determination but that they know she didn't have her phone after she left Los Angeles International Airport. That day, family members said, she sent messages that concerned them because of their content and a voice that didn't seem to match hers. The sweeping pardon means Hunter Biden won’t face any punishment for criminal convictions in two separate cases, one involving gun charges, the other tax evasion. “They took a gamble that didn’t play out as they hoped,” former Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said. If he follows through, Trump may try to blunt the fallout by invoking the Biden pardon. “Joe Biden's pardon of Hunter Biden proves President Trump's signature campaign promise to end the weaponization of our justice system needs to happen,” she said, adding: “President Trump has made that promise. A judge has already ruled there is no merit to the idea that Hunter Biden is a victim of selective prosecution.
