Morning Bid: Big Tech reports as bond yields recoil
  + stars: | 2023-10-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
The two tech giants report after the bell on Tuesday, with Meta (META.O) following on Wednesday and Amazon (AMZN.O) on Thursday. Partly lifted by the year's artificial intelligence craze, the tech behemoths have clearly flattered year-to-date gains of 10% in the overall S&P500. And yet the seemingly endless squeeze in bond markets since midyear has seen megacap indexes (.NYFANG) retreat some 12% from their highs for the year. The upshot of the whole picture is to give U.S. stock futures a lift ahead of the open on Tuesday - with Asia and European bourses in positive territory too as bond markets stabilised. Ten-year U.S. Treasury yields held about 4.83% - some 19 basis points below Monday's peak at 5.02%.

Major earnings reports and economic data will be in focus next week as investors seek clarity on how the Federal Reserve will proceed from here. But next week will bring the lion's share of results including reports from mega-cap darlings Alphabet, Amazon , Meta Platforms and Microsoft . While the S & P 500 is higher by 10% in 2023, the equal-weighted index is down slightly. Of note, Tesla shares sank more than 9% on Thursday following a pessimistic economic outlook from CEO Elon Musk during the company's earnings call. Its the S & P 500's first weekly loss in three weeks.

Retail sales rose 0.7% last month as households boosted purchases of motor vehicles and spent more at restaurants and bars. Despite the positive sales, Jeffrey Roach, chief economist for LPL Financial, noted that there are some headwinds affecting U.S. consumers. "Investors need to look underneath the sales figures to get a better look on the health of the consumer. Rising use of credit and early signs of delinquencies could dampen some of the enthusiasm," he said in a note. Fed funds futures traders are pricing in a 43% chance of an additional interest rate hike this year, but only 12% odds of a rate increase next month, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool.

Morning Bid: Banks, Biden visit buoy markets
  + stars: | 2023-10-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., August 15, 2023. Biden leaves later on Tuesday for a high stakes visit to Israel and Jordan and Washington said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed to let humanitarian aid reach besieged Gazans. That reversed a pre-weekend 'safety bid' that emerged amid fears an Israeli ground invasion into Gaza could draw other regional countries and groups into the war. Before then, bond markets will have to negotiate tomorrow's 20-year Treasury auction. The relatively new 20-year tenor has often proved unpopular and will be watched closely after a poor reception for the latest 30-year bond last week.

There is no end in sight for high mortgage rates, and sellers are dropping prices. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe housing market is in an ugly place right now for buyers and while things may be stabilizing, that just means pressure will likely shift from buyers to sellers. Redfin CEO Glenn Kelman made headlines in recent weeks with several interviews where he said the housing market had hit "rock bottom." "The housing market is just taking a beating because affordability is at a four-decade low. While the market might not get worse for buyers, sellers are not yet at rock bottom after enjoying years of rising home values.

Tom Barkin, president of the Richmond Fed, recently commented on housing on the "Odd Lots" podcast. Home prices have stayed high as the pandemic sparked a "secular change" in the way people think about housing. That could mean sectors other than housing will need to see slowdowns, he suggested. AdvertisementAdvertisementHe added that the housing market ultimately remains imbalanced, and that could mean sectors other than housing will need to see slowdowns. But relative prices move all the time, and if what we've seen is a secular shift toward more demand for housing, that might mean somewhat less lessening of housing prices and somewhat more lessening of other prices."

Morning Bid: Nervy bond bounce on soft jobs and oil
  + stars: | 2023-10-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
[1/2] A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., July 19, 2023. Although both oil and bond yields calmed somewhat overnight, U.S. crude plunged by more than $5 per barrel on Wednesday. The tentative bond bid and shifting interest rate picture stopped the rot in stock markets too, with Wall St stocks rallying on Wednesday and the Nasdaq (.IXIC) staging its biggest daily gain since August. But in a sign of the nervousness, European stock markets stalled again and Wall St futures were back in the red. Despite considerable progress, she said, "inflation continues to be too high, and I expect it will likely be appropriate for the (Fed) to raise rates further and hold them at a restrictive level for some time." The Fed targets 2% inflation. Given that progress, U.S. central bankers last month opted to keep the policy rate in its current 5.25%-5.50% range even as most signaled another rate hike would likely be needed before year's end. Speaking at a separate event in New York on Monday, Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr said he believes rates are now "at or very near" a sufficiently restrictive level. The same Fed forecasts also show policymakers as a group expect stronger economic growth and a stronger job market than they had expected just three months earlier.

Dollar off 10-month high, yen still under intervention watch

The dollar held off a 10-month high on Friday as markets headed into the end of the quarter, giving the yen slightly more breathing room at the end of the week amid intervention concerns. The yen remains in focus as it trades near the 150 level, which is viewed as potentially spurring intervention from Japanese authorities. Against the dollar, the Japanese currency last traded at 149.34 yen . Elsewhere, the euro stood at $1.05625, down 0.04% so far in Asia after climbing off this week's multi-month low of $1.0488. Investors will be looking ahead to Friday's CPI data out of the euro zone for clues into the state of the bloc's economy.

Headwinds are piling up for the market heading into the final week of the month, as September lives up to its reputation as a horrible month for Wall Street. Wolfe Research's Rob Ginsberg pointed out in a note this week that the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) doesn't suggest much fear in markets. "We have a potential shutdown in Washington, as well as the UAW strike, which could potentially create some volatility in jobs data in particular." But investors heading into the final trading week of September will likely see a continuation of those losses, if history is any indication. "We could see the market experience additional weakness over the next several weeks," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA.

U.S. Treasury yields were mixed on Thursday as investors await signals on monetary policy from central bankers at the upcoming Jackson Hole meeting. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was up around 2 basis points at 4.215%, after hitting a 16-year high on Monday. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond climbed less than 1 basis point to 4.288%. Richmond Fed president Thomas Barkin struck a hawkish tone on Tuesday, reiterating that the Fed needs to defend the 2% inflation target to preserve its credibility with the public. The U.S. Treasury on Thursday will auction $80 billion in 4-week bills, $70 billion in 8-week bills and $8 billion in 29-year and six-month Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities.

Even as inflation has slowed from last summer's 40-year highs, Fed officials have been reluctant to declare their job finished until there are clearer signs the economy is slowing. If, as some argue, the interest rate that neither stimulates nor restrains the economy has shifted higher, it means Fed policy is putting less pressure on the economy than expected. Partly to let its policies play out, the Fed is widely expected to leave interest rates on hold at its Sept. 19-20 meeting. Will the bulk of policymakers feel higher rates will be needed to finish the job? "I do expect some rise in unemployment will be required to get underlying inflation into a zone where the Fed is comfortable."
