This time round, Charles III hosted the first state visit of his reign and welcomed South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to the UK. The South African state visit was Charles’s first big diplomatic test. But this week, the prominence of the Prince and Princess of Wales during the state visit indicated that the couple have been elevated into crucial central roles. A Christian organization has started a petition protesting Trump's 2024 campaign. Faithful America is asking Christians to "speak out" against Trump running for president. The petition was launched on November 16 by Faithful America. Faithful America also said in its petition that the Bible teaches "love, equality, and dignity," which it says are values that Trump's MAGA movement "clearly rejects." A representative at Trump's press office did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Sen. Raphael Warnock is weaponizing Donald Trump's endorsement of his campaign rival, Herschel Walker, in a new ad. The 30-second ad spotlights Trump's endorsement of Walker as he and Warnock head toward a runoff election in December, since neither candidate won 50% during the midterm election. The tagline at the end says "Stop Donald Trunp" and "Stop Herschel Walker." Warnock for Georgia Campaign Manager Quentin Fulks in a statement said Walker "surrounds himself with some of the most divisive politicians in Washington, so it's no surprise that he has Donald Trump's endorsement. Drew Godinich, the committee's senior director of communications, said, "even with Trump's baggage, Herschel Walker remains the biggest threat to Republicans' hopes of winning this race."
With 99% of the vote counted, Warnock leads Walker 49.6% to 48.3%, or by roughly 49,000 votes. If neither party sweeps both Arizona and Nevada, a Georgia runoff would once again determine which party controls the Senate for the next two years. Warnock is kicking off his campaigning for the runoff Thursday afternoon with an event in Atlanta, his campaign said. “We’re going to do whatever Sen. Warnock wants us to do in terms of events or fundraising. I think Sen. Warnock has done an incredible job.
[1/2] Reverend Raphael Warnock, Democratic Senator from Georgia, speaks to supporters at a U.S. midterm election night party in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., November 9, 2022. REUTERS/Bob StrongWASHINGTON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Control of the U.S. Senate may once again be decided in Georgia, weeks after Election Day as a tight race between Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker could be headed to a Dec. 6 runoff. But Warnock has not yet reached the 50% threshold needed to avoid a runoff, according to data from Edison Research. It was one of two Senate seats up for grabs in the formerly reliably Republican state. So far, Warnock's campaign has spent $135.8 million, while Walker's campaign has spent $32.4 million, according to data from the Federal Election Commission.
Warnock defended his votes on a sweeping climate and health care bill and gun violence prevention legislation during his two years in the Senate. Heading into the debate, Walker called himself a “dumb country boy,” setting low expectations against Warnock, the eloquent pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Martin Luther King Jr. used to minister. Walker’s debate goal was simple: Go on offense, tie Warnock to unpopular President Joe Biden, rising gas prices and high inflation. Warnock hammered Walker for opposing the Inflation Reduction Act to defend himself against attacks that his votes fueled inflation. Walker appeared flat-footed when asked if he favors Medicaid expansion, saying that "people have coverage for health care" and that he wants Georgians to "get off the government health care and get on the health care he’s got," gesturing toward Warnock.
A general view of the aftermath of a mine dam wall collapse in Jagersfontein, South Africa, September 12, 2022. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterThe disaster has raised questions about who should be responsible for tailings dams oversight in South Africa and across the world. The Jagersfontein dam burst follows the brumadinho tailings dam collapse in Brazil nearly four years ago, which killed hundreds when a Vale SA (VALE3.SA)-owned dam collapsed. South Africa's government, mining industry and experts are still in the process of updating the country's tailings code to align with the global standard, the Minerals Council of South Africa said. The experts say, for example, that the global standards require a clearer responsibility and accountability structure than the current mine residue code in South Africa.
London CNN —The Church of England has banned Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s daughter from conducting her godfather’s funeral because she is married to a woman. CNNIn an interview with CNN, Tutu van Furth said Kenyon’s daughters had planned to hold the funeral at St. Michael and All Angels church in the village of Wentnor, where he lived. The Episcopal Church, which, like the Church of England, is part of the Anglican Communion, allows its clergy to enter into same-sex marriage. Tutu van Furth said she felt the time had come for the Church of England to move with the times, but added: “The church moves at the pace the church moves. Tutu van Furth told CNN: “My parents arrived in London in 1962.
