AIPAC is not the only reason Jamaal Bowman lost
  + stars: | 2024-06-26 | by ( Bryan Metzger | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +10 min
Read previewRep. Jamaal Bowman was roundly defeated in the Democratic primary for New York's 16th congressional district on Tuesday, making him the first member of the progressive "Squad" to lose reelection. AIPAC spent over $17 million on Bowman's primary. On the ground, AIPAC's offensive translated into TV ads attacking Bowman and praising Latimer, as well as a deluge of mailers at residents' doors. Congressman Jamaal Bowman won both primaries, upsetting former Congressman Eliot Engel in 2020, and beating two Westchester County legislators in 2022. Months before AIPAC began dropping millions of dollars on the race, polling already showed Bowman struggling against Latimer.

In a presidential election where both leading candidates are unpopular, there’s much talk about what each candidate can say to swing voters in Thursday’s debate. But true swing voters are disengaged from political news; in fact, many avoid it with a determination normally reserved for toxic exes, ticks and food poisoning. To the extent they learn what’s said on Thursday, it’ll be via repackaged clips on social media. Mr. Biden’s challenge is to reassure skeptical Democrats that he is still vigorous and that he is responsive to voters’ worries about inflation and other problems on their minds. Mr. Trump needs to convince Nikki Haley Republicans and others concerned about his ethics that their differences are less significant than his promise of financial security, tight borders and abortion restrictions.

Read previewScientists have long suspected that industrial chemicals used in plastic water bottles can disrupt human hormones. Now, a groundbreaking new study shows direct evidence that bisphenol A — or, BPA, a chemical used to package food and drink — can reduce sensitivity to insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar. An impaired ability to respond to insulin, known as insulin resistance, can mean chronically high blood sugar levels and a much higher risk of type 2 diabetes. "We were surprised to see that reducing BPA exposure, such as using stainless steel or glass bottles and BPA-free cans, may lower diabetes risk."

“There’s high anticipation here and great excitement,” Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Wednesday before Mr. Trump’s visit. Mr. McConnell condemned Mr. Trump’s actions and declared him responsible. Pressed about Mr. Trump’s visit to Washington, Mr. McConnell told reporters on Wednesday, “I said earlier this year I supported him. He’s earned the nomination by the voters all across the country.”Defying the expectations of Mr. McConnell and many others, Mr. Trump did not disappear. Most of corporate America had turned its back on Mr. Trump after the violence on Jan. 6.

About 330 balloons carrying bags of trash had been sent by North Korea since Saturday night, of which about 80 have landed in South Korea, Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said on Sunday. South Korea’s National Security Council held an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss responses to the latest wave of balloons. Trash from a balloon presumably sent by North Korea lies on scattered the ground in Seoul, South Korea on June 9, 2024. South Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff/APIn May, North Korea responded by sending its own giant balloons south – containing trash, soil, pieces of paper and plastic, and what South Korean authorities described as “filth.”Kim said the balloons were “strictly a responsive act” to South Korea’s years-long practice of sending balloons with anti-North Korea leaflets the other way. South Korea’s JCS said Saturday night that North Korea was “boosting its presumed trash balloons,” and warned that the wind direction may lead to balloons moving south.

Seventeen years later, gentle parenting is now the default among my professional-class millennial peers. Teachers blame gentle parenting for bad behavior in classrooms, which some believe is accelerating an exodus from the profession. Ample research links an authoritative parenting style — such as gentle parenting — with the most favorable psychosocial outcomes in children. These are among the questions that gentle parents must contend with, often on the fly. When gentle parenting goes wrong, everyone takes note.

CNN —The United States flew a B-1B bomber over the Korean Peninsula on Wednesday in the first live munitions drop over South Korea in seven years as part of joint air exercises between the two countries, the US and South Korea said Wednesday. As part of the exercise, the US B-1B Lancer and two South Korean F-15K Eagles dropped precision 500-pound JDAMs (joint direct attack munitions), simultaneously striking multiple targets, the US said. The American bomber then flew with advanced South Korean F-35A and KF-16 fighter jets, as well as US fighters and tankers. “This training showcases the incredible capabilities of our combined forces to simultaneously strike multiple targets in a contested environment,” said Lt. Gen. David Iverson, US Force Korea deputy commander and Seventh Air Force commander. The joint training on Wednesday marked the first time the B-1B has conducted “a live munitions drop” on the Korean Peninsula since 2017 to demonstrate its capability to “precisely strike deep target,” South Korea’s defense ministry said.

Here are a few other tips from career experts for new grads to consider. Your field might also have all sorts of professional associations — for examples, in accounting there's the American Accounting Association; in dentistry there's the National Dental Association. "And that is such a great way to grow your skills and your network and your reputation," says career coach Phoebe Gavin. Some of these associations may have job boards, but they're also a great way to meet people who could open those kinds of doors down the line. Both those clubs you were in and the professional associations offer good opportunities to contact people for informational interviews.

CNN —When you’re trying to address mental health symptoms, simply the belief that you can be helped may be an important factor. Symptoms of nine mental health disorders substantially improved under placebo treatment, according to a new review of 90 randomized controlled trials — known as a meta-analysis — totaling 9,985 adult participants largely in their 30s and 40s. “This is the most comprehensive study of placebo effects in psychiatry.”The results are also important for patient treatment, Bschor said. But for disorders that didn’t see as much improvement with placebos — such as OCD or schizophrenia, which is a psychotic disorder — medication may be more necessary. Improvement in absence of medicationThat mental health symptoms improved with placebo treatment may be due to a few potential influences, experts said.

The landslide occurred in the mountainous Enga region in northern Papua New Guinea on Friday and the latest missing figure is a sharp rise from earlier estimates. Mohamud Omer/International Organization for Migration/APMiok Michael, a local community leader, told CNN that it was likely there were few survivors. But that may now be a major underestimate according to the latest projection from Papua New Guinea’s disaster agency. “There are no reports of earthquakes at this time but we did have quite a lot of rain and a lot of unseasonal weather happening across Papua New Guinea,” Jensen said.

The question for some of us is, why some people want to keep working decades beyond retirement age? CNN Opinion editor Stephanie Griffith asked seven people who are past the conventional retirement age why they are still at the job and got as many responses as there were respondents. They continue to work happily and productively, and were happy to explain to us how and why they do it. Over the years I’ve had to adapt frequently to the changing technology, which isn’t always easy for someone my age. That may be the secret of working well past the time society tells us we’re supposed to retire.

Hunger strikes are typically the third act of political protest, the point at which the conventional provocations, having failed to yield the desired result, push the most impassioned closer toward martyrdom. “What the university is making abundantly clear is that they would rather let students starve than enter a dialogue,” David Chmielewski, one of the strikers, a soft-spoken senior, told me. Princeton has been less responsive to student demands around the war in Gaza than some of its peers. The discussion had followed a sit-in that began on April 25 and then the occupation of an administrative building four days later, where 13 students were arrested. The hunger strikers have said that they will continue to limit themselves to water until the conversations around disentangling from Israel become substantive and the university allows students who have been arrested back on campus, dismissing the disciplinary charges against them.

CNN —The Biden administration moved Friday to terminate a decades-old agreement that governs conditions for migrant children in government custody, according to a court filing, which argues that the settlement was meant to be temporary. The 1997 Flores settlement, as the agreement is known, requires the government to release children from government custody without unnecessary delay to sponsors, like parents or adult relatives, and dictates conditions by which children are held. “The Rule is expansive and responsive to the changing needs of ORR’s (Unaccompanied Children) Program. But immigration attorneys have expressed concern over the lack of outside oversight if the Flores settlement is terminated. “If the government were to prevail in its motion, HHS would no longer be bound by the Flores settlement.

CNN —As one of the lead negotiators for students protesting inside the grounds of Columbia University, Mahmoud Khalil said his primary objective was to get the university to sever all financial ties with Israel. Khalil said Columbia never put anything in writing, instead making offers verbally. But without a firm promise, Columbia’s offer didn’t go far enough for Khalil and other protesters, since the university had previously rejected divestment proposals. Khalil said they then presented Columbia with another offer: Rather than dump Israel-tied investments, Columbia could instead divest from weapons manufacturing companies and any companies complicit in violating international law.
