Gold prices eased on Monday, weighed down by a firmer U.S. dollar, while investors looked out for fresh clues on Federal Reserve interest rate cuts. Spot gold fell 0.2% to $2,651.99 per ounce by 0252 GMT after rising 1% in the previous session. The dollar index rose 0.1% on Monday, not far from a near two-month high hit last week. Traders see a roughly 89% chance of the Fed cutting rates by 25 basis points at its November meeting, and an 11% chance it will leave rates unchanged. Meanwhile, investors will watch out for comments from Fed officials this week for more hints on upcoming rate cuts, along with U.S. retail sales data.

The dollar extended its gains in early Monday trades in Asia as a holiday in Japan sapped liquidity, leaving China's somewhat disappointing weekend stimulus announcements the focus of market attention. The yuan is down 0.9% against the dollar since Sept. 24, when the People's Bank of China kicked off China's most aggressive stimulus measures since the pandemic. Investors need to be wary as sticky inflation remains a risk, Deutsche Bank says. But it's not yet time for investors to relax, Deutsche Bank wrote on Monday. "If inflation does return, this could have very important implications for markets," Deutsche Bank strategists said. While that much is true, history shows that easing cycles are precisely the time to be cautious over inflation, Deutsche said. The firm cited the fact that in August, US M2 money supply rose 2.0% year-over-year, the highest growth rate since September 2022.

The education gap grows“The biggest single, best predictor of how someone’s going to vote in American politics now is education level. The real swing votersTo the extent that traditional swing voters are persuadable in this election, Sosnik argued they might be people like political independents or Nikki Haley Republicans. But there’s a second group of swing voters Sosnik argued is even more important. For Trump, these are non-college-educated White voters in general, particularly men, who “if they vote, you know they’re going to vote for Trump,” he said. Young voters, who are less reliable to cast ballots, also fall into this second type of swing voters, Sosnik said.

Trump's proposed tax break would make interest on car loans fully tax deductible. That tax break lets homeowners deduct annual mortgage interest payments from their taxable income, thereby reducing their tax bill. Few taxpayers claim itemized tax deductionsTo get the deduction, car owners would need to itemize their tax return to include their borrowing costs. About 14.8 million federal tax returns, or about 9%, claimed an itemized deduction on their 2021 federal tax returns, according to the most recent IRS data. An itemized tax break on car loan interest "would help only a fraction of taxpayers," said Leonard Burman, an institute fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.

CNN —Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel says he expects Tua Tagovailoa to play football this season after suffering his latest concussion earlier this year. But after his most recent head injury, McDaniel told reporters on Monday he hopes to see Tagovailoa return to the field this season. There’s still information that he’s seeking this week,” McDaniel said. The Dolphins have struggled in Tagovailoa’s absence, losing twice and winning their most recent game in Week 5 against the New England Patriots. After guiding the Dolphins to the playoffs last season, Tagovailoa agreed to a four-year contract extension in the offseason, reportedly worth $212.4 million.

European flags flutter in front of the European Central Bank (ECB) building prior to a news conference following the meeting of the governing council of the ECB in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, on September 12, 2024. Daniel Roland | Afp | Getty ImagesThe European Central Bank is on course to deliver its third interest rate cut of the year at its meeting this Thursday, as policymakers say inflation risks are easing faster than previously expected. Headline price rises in the euro area cooled to 1.8% in September, below the central bank's 2% target. Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau last week described an October rate cut as "very likely" and said such a step "won't be the last." This led him to forecast ECB rate cuts will take place both this week and at each of the central bank's forthcoming meetings, until the deposit rate hits 2.5%.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday opined on the continuous success of Big Tech stocks in the market, explaining why the Magnificent Seven, as well as Netflix , continue to rally as the bull market persists. "Even if you've missed these rebounds in the Magnificent Seven plus Netflix, don't, don't sweat the program," he said. The Magnificent Seven includes Amazon , Alphabet , Apple , Microsoft , Nvidia , Meta and Tesla , and many of these stocks have seen declines in recent months followed by strong rebounds. And despite Tesla's robotaxi flop, Cramer said it's unwise to short the stock and bet against CEO Elon Musk. "Other groups can roar, too, in this market, perhaps because there's just a lot of money going around."

But mortgage rates are expected to go down next year, so it could be worth waiting if you aren't in a rush. 5-Year Mortgage Rate TrendsHere's how 30-year and 15-year mortgage rates have trended over the last five years, according to Freddie Mac data. Mortgage rates are determined by a variety of different factors, including larger economic trends, Federal Reserve policy, your state's current mortgage rates, the type of loan you're getting, and your personal financial profile. But now that inflation has decelerated and the Fed is expected to cut rates soon, mortgage rates have trended down. This means your entire monthly mortgage payment, including taxes and insurance, shouldn't exceed 28% of your pre-tax monthly income.

Canada and India each expelled six diplomats Monday in tit-for-tat moves as part of an escalating dispute over the June 2023 assassination of a Sikh activist in Canada. Shortly afterward, the Indian foreign ministry said that it was expelling six Canadian diplomats, including the acting high commissioner and the deputy high commissioner. It said in a statement that the diplomats were told to leave India by the end of Saturday. A senior Canadian official said that Canada expelled the Indian diplomats first before they withdrew. In response to the allegations, India told Canada last year to remove 41 of its 62 diplomats in the country.

He said he was excited by both banks' performance and suggested their success means earnings season will bring more positive news. Berkshire Hathaway's Bank of America stake has finally been cut to below the key 10% threshold, keeping Warren Buffett's next potential moves under wraps for a few months. The first 700 million shares had a low cost basis of only about $7 per share, while the average cost of the next 300 million shares was in the $30s, Goldberg estimated. "When we sell something, very often it's going to be our entire stake," Buffett said in 2020 when he entirely dumped his holdings in airlines.
