For the first time since Donald J. Trump was indicted in the spring of 2023, he has lost his grip on the news cycle and — temporarily at least — his message. Instead of commanding morning-to-night media attention, the former president and his allies suddenly find themselves reacting to their opponents. It’s an unfamiliar experience for Mr. Trump, who has monopolized America’s televisions, newspapers and smartphones for more than 12 months through indictments, primary victories, 34 felony convictions, an assassination attempt and a Republican National Convention at which he was celebrated as a quasi-religious figure. In the three days since President Biden announced he was quitting the 2024 race, Mr. Trump has entered foreign territory. Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Mr. Biden endorsed on Sunday and around whom Democrats rapidly coalesced, has enjoyed a political hot streak that Mr. Biden’s advisers could have only dreamed of during the 2024 campaign.

Obviously, the big political news of the past couple of days has come from the Democratic side. But before last week’s Republican National Convention fades from view, let me focus instead on a development on the G.O.P. Until now, most of the anti-immigration sloganeering coming from Donald Trump and his campaign has involved false claims that we’re experiencing a migrant crime wave. Increasingly, however, Trump and his associates have started making the case that immigrants are stealing American jobs — specifically, the accusation that immigrants are inflicting terrible damage on the livelihoods of Black workers. Of course, the idea that immigrants are taking jobs away from native-born Americans, including native-born Black Americans, isn’t new.

CNN —President Joe Biden outraised – and dramatically outspent – the campaign of Republican rival Donald Trump last month, new campaign reports filed Saturday show, raising questions about how long the president’s political team can operate at full throttle if donations dry up. By contrast, Trump’s campaign spent just shy of $10 million, leaving $128 million in its war chest. One fundraiser that proceeded over the weekend in Cape Cod brought in more $2 million, campaign officials said. Trump’s campaign, meanwhile, has consistently spent far less than Biden’s. The Secret Service official said extra security accommodations could not always be made for Trump due to the department's limited resources. "In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told NBC News. Last Sunday, he said the assertion that the Secret Service had rebuffed Trump's team's requests for additional security were "absolutely false." I watched hour upon hour of the Republican National Convention, something I’ve done every four years since I was a young political nerd in 1984. Speaker after speaker repeated the claim that America was safer and the world was more secure when Trump was president. If past performance is any indicator of future results, Americans should brace themselves for more chaos if Trump wins. The theme of the second night of the convention was “Make America Safe Again.” Yet the public mustn’t forget that the murder rate skyrocketed under Trump. According to the Pew Research Center, “The year-over-year increase in the U.S. murder rate in 2020 was the largest since at least 1905 — and possibly ever.”
