For the first time since Donald J. Trump was indicted in the spring of 2023, he has lost his grip on the news cycle and — temporarily at least — his message. Instead of commanding morning-to-night media attention, the former president and his allies suddenly find themselves reacting to their opponents. It’s an unfamiliar experience for Mr. Trump, who has monopolized America’s televisions, newspapers and smartphones for more than 12 months through indictments, primary victories, 34 felony convictions, an assassination attempt and a Republican National Convention at which he was celebrated as a quasi-religious figure. In the three days since President Biden announced he was quitting the 2024 race, Mr. Trump has entered foreign territory. Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Mr. Biden endorsed on Sunday and around whom Democrats rapidly coalesced, has enjoyed a political hot streak that Mr. Biden’s advisers could have only dreamed of during the 2024 campaign.

Melania Trump speaks from the podium on the first night of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 18, 2016. Former first lady Melania Trump's upcoming memoir will hit bookstores on Sept. 24, her publisher tells CNBC, just weeks before the presidential election on Nov. 5. Her husband, former President Donald Trump, will face the de facto Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris. "The former First Lady invites readers into her world, offering an intimate portrait of a woman who has lived an extraordinary life," the release goes on to say. Born and raised in Slovenia, Melania Trump moved to the U.S. in 1996 to work as a model, and met Donald Trump in 1998.

In the three days since President Biden announced he was quitting the 2024 race, Mr. Trump has entered foreign territory. But within 24 hours, Democratic leaders unofficially crowned Ms. Harris and stamped out any notable opposition. His team considered mounting legal challenges to her campaign committee to make it harder for Ms. Harris to hit the ground running. And Mr. Trump is still cycling through nicknames for Ms. Harris — a sign that he hasn’t yet figured out how he intends to portray her. And some Trump campaign officials have telegraphed plans to “Willie Horton” Ms. Harris.

In May, Haley said she would vote for Trump, sparking backlash from some anti-Trump Republicans who had supported her campaign. Even after she suspended her campaign in March, Haley continued to get a significant share of the vote in subsequent primaries. “I know that Trump kept dictators at bay, and that’s what I hope he will continue to do,” she said. That’s what I want President Trump to have. “First of all, she was official, she should have been there,” Haley said of Harris, who serves as president of the Senate in her official capacity.

CNN —After Vice President Kamala Harris accused former President Donald Trump of “backpedaling” on a debate, the Trump campaign said Thursday it would not commit to any future debates until the Democratic Party formally chooses a nominee. “I have agreed to the previously agreed upon September 10th debate, he agreed to that previously,” Harris told reporters after landing at Joint Base Andrews Thursday. Trump told reporters earlier this week he wants to debate Harris but has not yet agreed to anything. Before Biden withdrew from the race, Harris had positioned herself to go up against Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, on the debate stage. “I was told I was going to get to debate Kamala Harris, and now President Trump’s going to get to debate her?” Vance joked.

President Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he would leave the presidential race effectively pushed Donald J. Trump and the Republican National Convention from the spotlight. A Trump campaign spokesman did not immediately respond to request for comment. But Mr. Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he would exit the presidential race effectively pushed Mr. Trump and his convention from the spotlight. The Trump campaign also filed a complaint on Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission accusing Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris of violating campaign finance laws by rolling Mr. Biden’s campaign funds over to Ms. Harris. The complaint, filed by Mr. Warrington, came after Mr. Biden’s team had amended the name of its campaign committee on Sunday to Harris for President.

Recent polling suggests nearly 9 in 10 Americans believe Mr. Biden’s decision to step aside was the right one. 65 called Mr. Biden’s withdrawal a coup or said it amounted to election interference. These statements have tended to argue that Mr. Biden’s decision to end his candidacy was not his own, was not democratic or both. Some of this language began to bubble up among Republicans even before Mr. Biden announced that he would drop out. One common line of attack, positing that Ms. Harris failed as a “border czar,” is misleading.

Read previewVice presidential candidates typically receive a ratings bump after their party's convention, but JD Vance is bucking the tradition. Since 2000, vice presidential candidates typically have a net positive rating immediately following the convention, at plus 19 points. Vance, however, is polling at minus six points just one week after accepting the vice presidential nomination and officially embarking on the campaign, according to the network. "The JD Vance pick makes no sense from a statistical polling perspective," CNN political data reporter Harry Enten said. "We'd like to be the first to congratulate JD Vance on making history as the least popular VP pick, well…ever," it reads.

Washington CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address Congress on Wednesday – seeking to shore up American support for his war in Gaza and redirect the attention of a nation that has been preoccupied for weeks by a stream of domestic political issues. Netanyahu’s address to Congress comes at a crucial crossroads for the war. Netanyahu, meanwhile, has accused the United States of “withholding weapons and ammunitions to Israel,” claims that American officials flatly rejected. After arriving in Washington earlier this week, Netanyahu met with some American relatives of hostages held by Hamas. Former President Donald Trump and Netanyahu will also meet Friday at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump announced Tuesday.

That’s a closer contest than earlier CNN polling this year had found on the matchup between Biden and Trump. Half of those who back Harris in the new poll (50%) say their vote is more in support of her than against Trump. Among voters under 35, 49% said in April or June that they would support Trump and 42% Biden, but now, 47% support Harris to 43% for Trump. Among Hispanic voters, Biden trailed Trump in earlier polling 50% to 41%; those same voters now split about evenly, 47% Harris to 45% for Trump. That narrowed gap is driven at least partly by increased Harris support among independents who lean toward the Democratic Party.

Time: The idea of Ms. Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee will take a few days to ripple through the public consciousness. Now, one party has answered the call, and one question becomes: Is Ms. Harris that longed-for alternative, or is she seen as simply a continuation of the much-maligned Biden candidacy? Ms. Harris will drive abortion messaging more sharply. Against Ms. Harris, Republicans could fall into the “very online” trap. It’s hard to overstate the extent to which Republicans view Ms. Harris as unappealing.

CNN —Rudy Giuliani’s trip to Milwaukee for last week’s Republican National Convention was bankrolled by the media platform started by “My Pillow Guy” Mike Lindell, Giuliani’s lawyer told a bankruptcy court that is scrutinizing the former New York City mayor’s finances. Lindell told CNN on Tuesday that Giuliani is an employee of the media company, but declined to say how much he was being paid for the job, which he said started July 1. Judge Sean Lane of the federal bankruptcy court in White Plains, New York, is expected to issue a ruling any day on how to move forward. Lindell told CNN on Tuesday that he paid for Giuliani’s travel because the former New York mayor was hired on July 1 as a host for Lindell’s right-wing broadcast platform, FrankSpeech TV. Giuliani said he had “no regrets at all” about how he treated Moss and Freeman during the 2020 election.

The prosecutor-versus-felon approach may appeal to undecided voters who had been sour on both Mr. Trump and President Biden. Mr. Trump, for his part, has been trying to soften some of his harshest rhetoric about seeking vengeance on his rivals ahead of the general election. In the case of Ms. Harris, the contempt is displayed both in public and private. Since then, Mr. Trump has attacked her savagely, particularly when she became Mr. Biden’s running mate in 2020. On Sunday, Mr. Trump, who has insisted he would debate Mr. Biden anytime and anywhere, appeared to try to change the terms of the second debate.

But as detailed ceasefire negotiations aimed at turning a framework agreement into a final deal stretch into their third week, Netanyahu’s visit will still be critical to the prospects of a ceasefire in Gaza. Senior US officials say a deal is within reach, but the prospects of a deal may hinge on the answer to one key question: Does Netanyahu actually want a deal? And the right-wing coalition partners keeping him in power have threatened to bolt if Netanyahu cuts a deal that ends the war. And publicly, his rhetoric has undermined confidence in Israel’s commitment to reaching a deal that could end the war. And Netanyahu’s allies insist he is earnest in his desire to strike a hostage release deal – just the right deal, one that could allow Israel to resume fighting in Gaza.

Ms. Cheatle joined the Secret Service in 1995 and spent more than two decades there before leaving in 2021 to lead the North American security operations for PepsiCo. Ms. Cheatle, 53, is the second woman to lead the Secret Service. By the time she had graduated from college four years later, Ms. Cheatle had applied for a job at the Secret Service, the newspaper said. At the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, two Republican senators chastised Ms. Cheatle in a confrontation that was captured on video. An internal Secret Service investigation of the shooting is underway, as are several inquiries in Congress.

While she isn't yet his official opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris' mere presence could provoke such a reaction. Years later, Trump deeming former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "a nasty woman" remains a badge of honor for Democrats. Trump's former foes have turned his attacks into rallying cries, a response that Harris and her allies are likely to use. "Sarah, you're smart, you're beautiful, you're tough, and they attack you because you're good at your job," Sanders said.

Read previewShortly after President Joe Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination, Harris made her opening pitch to the country, arguing that voting for her will allow her to decimate the controversial Project 2025. I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. Although Harris said that she is determined to defeat former President Donald Trump and "his extreme Project 2025 agenda," Trump himself has called the project "ridiculous." "I disagree with some of the things they're saying and some of the things they're saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal," Trump wrote.

Obviously, the big political news of the past couple of days has come from the Democratic side. But before last week’s Republican National Convention fades from view, let me focus instead on a development on the G.O.P. Until now, most of the anti-immigration sloganeering coming from Donald Trump and his campaign has involved false claims that we’re experiencing a migrant crime wave. Increasingly, however, Trump and his associates have started making the case that immigrants are stealing American jobs — specifically, the accusation that immigrants are inflicting terrible damage on the livelihoods of Black workers. Of course, the idea that immigrants are taking jobs away from native-born Americans, including native-born Black Americans, isn’t new.

CNN —President Joe Biden outraised – and dramatically outspent – the campaign of Republican rival Donald Trump last month, new campaign reports filed Saturday show, raising questions about how long the president’s political team can operate at full throttle if donations dry up. By contrast, Trump’s campaign spent just shy of $10 million, leaving $128 million in its war chest. One fundraiser that proceeded over the weekend in Cape Cod brought in more $2 million, campaign officials said. Trump’s campaign, meanwhile, has consistently spent far less than Biden’s. A super PAC backing Trump’s candidacy, MAGA Inc., meanwhile, entered July with nearly $114 million in available cash.

The Secret Service denied some of former President Donald Trump's requests for additional security resources over the past two years, an official with the agency confirmed to NBC News. The Secret Service official said extra security accommodations could not always be made for Trump due to the department's limited resources. "In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told NBC News. Last Sunday, he said the assertion that the Secret Service had rebuffed Trump's team's requests for additional security were "absolutely false." In the wake of the attempted assassination of Trump, the Secret Service has been under intense scrutiny.

But while some pundits have argued his speech showed he is more subdued and humble in the wake of last week's failed assassination attempt against him, others aren't so sure he's changed at all. And some political scientists and experts on authoritarianism warn Trump could become even more radical after his near-death experience. We are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all," Trump told the RNC crowd as he briefly read messages promoting unity from a teleprompter. Not everyone is certain Trump will change much in the wake of his assassination attempt — for better or for worse. If the assassination attempt does change Trump, the effects may not be immediately apparent — though they are worth being on the lookout for.

Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

I watched hour upon hour of the Republican National Convention, something I’ve done every four years since I was a young political nerd in 1984. Speaker after speaker repeated the claim that America was safer and the world was more secure when Trump was president. If past performance is any indicator of future results, Americans should brace themselves for more chaos if Trump wins. The theme of the second night of the convention was “Make America Safe Again.” Yet the public mustn’t forget that the murder rate skyrocketed under Trump. According to the Pew Research Center, “The year-over-year increase in the U.S. murder rate in 2020 was the largest since at least 1905 — and possibly ever.”

Amber Rose, an OnlyFans model, influencer and former girlfriend to rappers, took the stage at the Republican National Convention on Monday night sporting her platinum buzz cut and face tattoo. Ms. Rose, the author of a book titled “How to Be a Bad Bitch,” told the overwhelmingly white crowd that she once believed “left-wing propaganda that Donald Trump was a racist.” But now, she said, she had “put the red hat on, too.”“These are my people,” she said. “This is where I belong.”As if to underscore the point, Ms. Rose appeared on the giant screens at the convention hall again the next night. This time it was in a music video for “Trump Trump Baby,” a remix of Vanilla Ice’s 1990s hit, “Ice Ice Baby,” performed by Forgiato Blow, a self-described MAGA rapper. Ms. Rose wore a hefty gold chain with a medallion of Mr. Trump’s face.
