Crypto marketplace OpenSea has been added to the SEC's list of targets, as the regulator extends its crackdown on the sector. The company's CEO said in a post on X on Wednesday that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission issued a Wells notice against OpenSea. A Wells notice is typically one of the final steps before the SEC issues formal charges. The letter, according to the OpenSea chief, alleges that the nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, sold on its platform are securities. In May, investment platform Robinhood announced it received a Wells notice for the company's crypto operations.

These seller-backed sales have become popular in poor neighborhoods with rundown single-family homes, where mortgages are hard to come by. Chesnot | Getty ImagesLONDON — E-commerce giant Amazon's multibillion-dollar investment in the U.S. artificial intelligence firm Anthropic is formally being investigated by a U.K. competition regulator. As part of the deal Amazon will make Anthropic's powerful large language models available on its Bedrock platform for building generative AI applications. "By investing in Anthropic, Amazon, along with other companies, is helping Anthropic expand choice and competition in this important technology. Amazon's spokesperson added that the company will continue to make Anthropic's models available to customers via Bedrock. "We welcome the opportunity to cooperate with the CMA and provide them with a comprehensive understanding of Amazon's investment and our commercial collaboration."

Financial-services firms risk the wrath of the Securities and Exchange Commission if their employees make campaign contributions to state or local officials such as Walz. Donating to the campaign would violate the regulator's "pay-to-play" rule, which keeps firms from trying to sway politicians for favors such as managing their state's pension fund. Those employees are also required to get permission to donate to the Harris-Walz campaign. It is possible to sidestep the pay-to-play rule by donating to PACs or Super PACs that aren't directly tied to the relevant candidate. "The Pay-to-Play Rule, although well-intentioned, imposes unique, unquantifiable costs on individuals by impeding their ability to participate in the political process."

Members of the main U.S. transportation regulator grilled Boeing executives Wednesday over the company’s workplace safety culture and allegations of retaliation linked to two employees who were sidelined over a January mishap involving a Boeing 737 Max 9 in which a door plug detached mid-flight. A preliminary report found that four bolts intended to secure the door plug had been missing when the accident occurred. The workers were placed in a different building where Boeing builds wings, which the NTSB said in a report workers refer to as “Boeing prison,” Homendy said at Tuesday’s hearing. Boeing is working on plug sensor changes that will not allow the door plug to fully close if there are any issues until it is firmly secured. Boeing committed under oath to work with the NTSB without interference on a safety culture survey of Boeing employees.

London CNN —Social media has played a big role in fueling the anti-immigration riots engulfing towns and cities in the United Kingdom. Musk later apologized for what he called his “dumbest” ever social media post. The UK government this week vowed to prosecute “online criminality” and has pushed social media companies to take action against the spread of false information. “Social media has put rocket boosters under… not just the misinformation but the encouragement of violence,” UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said Monday. It is unclear that the UK government has the tools to hold social media platforms accountable for their role in the riots.
