Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. Days 9 and 10 43 miles, through the original heart of Switzerland and the turquoise lakes of the canton of Glarus. This is the heart of Switzerland — the original cantons that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy, the precursor to the modern-day country.

CNN —Weapons experts have identified the remnants of two US-made munitions used in an Israeli missile strike Sunday on a school in central Gaza that according to local authorities killed at least 22 people. Hundreds were taking refuge at the former school in Nuseirat when it was struck by two missiles. CNN video from the scene Sunday showed an ambulance at the school, as people frantically searched through the rubble and destroyed makeshift shelters in the schoolyard. Then another missile hit. Ball told CNN there were also fragments of a US-made Hellfire missile at the site, including the top of the guidance system.

But her husband, D’Vontaye Mitchell, will never see his children again: The 43-year-old died on June 30 after he was pinned down by hotel security guards outside a Hyatt Regency hotel in Milwaukee in an incident partially captured on video. “I’m broken, empty, honestly.”Police have referred four charges of felony murder in Mitchell’s death to the district attorney’s office, Milwaukee Police told CNN in a statement Friday. It’s unclear how many employees were fired and if they include the security guards seen pinning Mitchell down. Security guards and others then pinned Mitchell to the ground.

The fate of 1.45 million refugees whose PORs expired at the end of June had previously been in doubt, with many fearing they’d be deported. But Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs disputed the UN’s claims that Islamabad had put on hold its plan announced last October to deport undocumented Afghan refugees. From there, Trump boasted that he had told White: “Why don’t you set up a migrant league of fighters and have your regular league of fighters. Obviously, Trump’s point in his migrant UFC proposal was that despite the toughness of the professional UFC fighters, the migrants coming to America are actually stronger, tougher and more dangerous. That moment came when Trump told the audience that the UFC president didn’t like the migrant fight league idea, adding, “But actually, it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever had.”Trump is telling the truth there: Musing about a migrant fighting league is vile — but it’s not his worst idea. CNN —A strange monolith found jutting out of the rocks in a remote mountain range near Las Vegas has been taken down by authorities. Members of the Las Vegas police search and rescue team found the object near Gass Peak, part of the vast Desert National Wildlife Refuge where bighorn sheep and desert tortoises can be found roaming. Then came sightings in Romania, central California, New Mexico and on the famed Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. Fish and Wildlife Service, is the largest wildlife refuge outside of Alaska and can cover the state of Rhode Island twice. The department said it “discourages anyone from venturing off marked trails or leaving objects and items behind.”“This poses a danger to you and the environment,” Las Vegas police said.

When reports spread that Pope Francis had used an offensive anti-gay slur while speaking to Italian bishops at a conference last month, many Catholics were both shocked and baffled. How could a pope known for his openness to and acceptance of L.G.B.T.Q. people use homophobic slang and caution prelates about admitting gay men into seminaries? But the question, and the apparent inconsistency in Francis’ messaging, reflect the deep contradictions and tensions that underlie the Roman Catholic Church’s and Francis’ relationship to homosexuality. The church holds that “homosexual tendencies” are “intrinsically disordered.” When it comes to ordination, the church’s guidelines state that people with “deep-seated” gay tendencies should not become priests.

What has happened to the right to think differently, to disagree and to engage in reasoned discourse? To the Editor:I enjoy reading David French’s thoughtful columns even though I, an atheist, don’t always agree with him. He has helped teach me to keep my heart open to those I might consider political opponents. So I was heartbroken to read his recent piece about the attacks and abandonment his family suffered at their former church.
