The widening conflict in the Middle East threatens to crimp growth and stoke inflation, experts say. AdvertisementExperts say the escalating war in the Middle East could choke global economic growth and reignite inflation, just as the US is dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, and China is trying to stabilize its beleaguered economy. "War in the Middle East could exacerbate the instabilities in the global economy, further increase the uncertainties, harm disinflationary efforts, and eventually reduce the global GDP growth," he told Business Insider. AdvertisementKaya warned the conflict could accelerate inflation by disrupting international supply chains and causing the cost of energy and shipping to rise. But he emphasized that hurricanes have historically had limited and short-lived impacts on growth and inflation.

Spruce Pine, North Carolina has no running water or electricity, more than a week after Helene ripped through the town of 2,200. Mines in Spruce Pine produce the world’s purest form of quartz, which plays a central role in chip manufacturing. Now, the town’s exceedingly valuable supply of high-purity quartz is at risk, threatening to cripple the $600 billion global semiconductor industry. “The Spruce Pine community has been hit particularly hard,” Sibelco said in a statement on Sept. 30. For the semiconductor industry, the challenges that any long-term disruption to the Spruce Pine mines would present cannot be overstated, experts say.

An aerial picture taken on September 28, 2024, shows storm damage in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in Valdosta, Georgia. The devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene across the southeastern United States could cost upwards of $34 billion, according to early estimates from Moody's Analytics. The Moody's report, released as Helene was making landfall last week, estimated that property damage could cost between $15 billion to $26 billion. And the resulting economic slowdown could cost $5 billion to $8 billion in productivity losses. Only about 6% of U.S. homeowners have flood insurance through either a private company or the congressionally funded National Flood Insurance Program, despite 90% of natural disasters involving flooding, he said.

The dockworkers' strike threatens supply chains, while Hurricane Helene caused costly damage. Devastation from Hurricane Helene, a dockworkers' strike, and escalating conflict in the Middle East all threaten to scramble supply chains and inflate prices. How much the strike impacts prices depends on how much of a cushion companies have built to deal with any bottlenecks. Bottlenecks also encourage carriers to raise their prices, increasing retail and consumer goods prices, Kent said. The hurricane has also disrupted some supply chains, including healthcare supplies and high-purity quartz needed for semiconductor manufacturing.

The Biden administration’s response to the hurricane has received bipartisan praise from political leaders in affected states. But Trump’s assertion that reviews for the Biden administration’s handling of the crisis have been entirely negative is not true. And this is just the latest Trump false claim on the subject of the administration’s hurricane response. Brian Kemp hadn’t been able to get Biden on the phone, though Kemp had said the same day that he had already spoken to Biden. CNN —Asheville was touted as a climate haven, a place to escape the worst ravages of extreme weather. It pummeled western North Carolina as a tropical storm Friday. In some ways, this scenic swath of western North Carolina was primed for catastrophe. Both systems concentrated their highest rainfall on western North Carolina, killing 11 people. A recent First Street report found parts of North Carolina devastated by Helene could now experience a once-in-100 year flood every 11 to 25 years.

The Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan has closed a $1.5 billion loan to support the first reactor restart in U.S. history, the Department of Energy announced Monday. Palisades' owner, Holtec International, hopes to restart the plant in the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to approval by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Demand for nuclear power is growing as the U.S. seeks carbon-free energy to meet rising electricity demand while meeting its climate goals. In the case of Palisades, the power is spoken for by Wolverine Power Cooperative, a nonprofit that provides electricity to rural communities in Michigan. Palisades will support 600 jobs in Covert Township near Lake Michigan and provide enough power for 800,000 homes, Turk said.

Florida ranks sixth among states with the largest shares of homeowners who don't have meaningful insurance. Putnam County, in the northern part of the state, is at 32.9%, while in Miami-Dade County, nearly 25% lack homeowners insurance that would protect them from calamity. In Miami-Dade County, 33.5% of homeowners pay $4,000-plus a year, ranking it in the top 10 among the country's most populous counties. CNN —A Pennsylvania health care system this month agreed to pay $65 million to victims of a February 2023 ransomware attack after hackers posted nude photos of cancer patients online, according to the victims’ lawyers. Eighty percent of the $65-million settlement is set aside for victims whose nude photos were published online. The ransomware attack “was limited to the network supporting one physician practice located in Lackawanna County,” the Lehigh statement continued. A February ransomware attack on a major health insurance billing firm cut off health providers from billions of dollars and put some health clinics on the brink of bankruptcy. A full-scale ransomware attack on a health care provider has many costs aside from potential lawsuits, from rebuilding computer systems to retaining legal counsel, Henderson said.
