I don’t know if anyone has ever clocked whether Tom Cruise is faster than a speeding bullet. He racks up more miles in “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh entry in a 27-year-old franchise that repeatedly affirms a movie truism. That is, there are few sights more cinematic than a human being outracing danger and even death onscreen — it’s the ultimate wish fulfillment! Once again, he plays Ethan Hunt, the leader of a hush-hush American spy agency, the Impossible Mission Force. The whole thing is complicated, as these stories tend to be, with stakes as catastrophic as recent news headlines have trumpeted.

Then, sitting in her cell, before her banishment into the mysterious outside world — a supposed death sentence — Bernard tries to convince Juliette (and himself) that his authoritarian actions were for the good of all. “To me, that was a really important scene,” said the series creator and showrunner, Graham Yost (“Justified”). You get the sense that this guy who we’ve come to believe is stone evil is someone who has his own burden. You realize he has the worst job in the Silo.”That word, “Silo,” refers both to the enormous subterranean city that shelters 10,000 people and to the practice of information siloing: filtering data through narrow, manipulative networks. Those living in the Silo — this one, at least — believe themselves to be the last people on Earth, having been convinced that life is impossible in the wasteland outside.

“Is love a tender thing?” Romeo asks early in the Shakespeare tragedy to which he and Juliet give their names. Not so much, according to the raw and riveting new production of “Romeo and Juliet” that opened Wednesday at the Almeida Theater here. It’s no surprise that the courtship between the noble Romeo — here played by the sweet-faced Toheeb Jimoh, from TV’s “Ted Lasso” — and the teenage Juliet will end in calamity. Her “Romeo and Juliet,” performed without an intermission, begins with the cast clawing feverishly at a stage wall, onto which are projected crucial lines from the prologue. But as if in haste to get straight to the meat of the play, the wall soon collapses to reveal the citizenry of Verona mid-combat.

One of China’s poorest provinces is testing Beijing’s mettle with a mountain of debt that local borrowers are struggling to repay. Investors worry it is a harbinger of another major debt crisis in the country, and believe the central government will have no choice but to defuse it.

CNN —Most moviegoers can pinpoint one summer movie – or perhaps, a summer of movies – in their formative years that really and truly cemented their love for going to the cinema, whether it be 1975’s “Jaws,” “E.T. And while streaming has clearly siphoned off part of the audience, particularly for more serious films, what we think of as “summer movies” still have the potential to rake in cash just like the old days. (CNN and DC are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Courtesy Warner Bros. PicturesInitially meant for streaming platforms, this vehicle will herald the cinematic arrival of DC Studios’ first Latino superhero, played by Xolo Maridueña of “Cobra Kai” and “Parenthood” fame. If the fast-paced trailer is any indication, the movie looks sure to whisk those dog days of summer doldrums away quite nicely.
A Country Garden residential development in Shanghai. Photo: Qilai Shen/Bloomberg NewsHONG KONG— Country Garden Holdings Co., one of China’s largest real-estate developers, bought residential land in a local government auction for the first time since December 2021, signaling confidence in its liquidity and a recovering housing market. The company, which used to be an aggressive acquirer of land, had been hit by a sharp slowdown in China’s property sector last year. Its sales of new apartments slumped, and prices of its dollar bonds slid to below 10 cents on the dollar in November, as investors worried that Country Garden could default on its debt like dozens of other developers.

Executives at UBS Group AG, which until recently competed with rival Credit Suisse Group AG to win business from Asia’s biggest companies and richest people, must now tackle the thorny question of how to combine the two banks in the region. That is just one conundrum facing senior executives at the banking giant following its acquisition of Credit Suisse for $3.25 billion, an emergency deal orchestrated by the Swiss government. But it is a critical one for a bank that has long seen Asia as a key growth market, particularly for wealth management—where banks offer services to the ultrarich.
The Evergrande Mingdu residential complex in Jiangsu province, China, is one of the many properties owned by Evergrande Group. China Evergrande Group, the giant property developer that defaulted on its U.S. dollar bonds more than a year ago, has struck a crucial deal with a group of bondholders, bringing its prolonged debt negotiations close to the finish line. The Guangzhou-based developer became the highest profile victim of the Chinese government’s deleveraging campaign more than two years ago, which fueled a sharp slowdown in the property sector and ultimately led to dozens of dollar bond defaults. Its negotiation with bondholders—which investors said often appeared close to faltering—covered more than $19 billion of bonds.

As people return to workplaces all over the world, they’re discovering something else has disappeared—the office cutlery. At the London office of PEI Group, a global financial-media company, forks and teaspoons go missing at an alarming rate, said Nicola Williams, its office manager. She said she orders a new batch of roughly 100 new pieces of cutlery every six months to fill three communal drawers.
