What’s happening: Two years ago, Lina Khan, 34, became the youngest and perhaps most progressive leader of the FTC’s 100-plus year history. Khan, meanwhile, was unable to successfully block Microsoft from closing its $69 billion purchase of videogame publisher Activision Blizzard last week. The rise of gig workers is changing the face of the US economyFrom CNN’s Samantha DelouyaLazarus Limo usually starts his day at 10 a.m. But workplace experts say the number of gig workers is growing, and and their impact is being felt throughout the economy. But whether the success of both films will translate into a sustained revival of the movie industry remains to be seen.

But so far there’s no sign that two and possibly more trials looming over Trump will convince most GOP primary voters he’s too much of a risk to nominate. In his first hours in the White House, Trump accused the media of falsely underestimating the size of his inaugural crowd. Some polls, for example, show substantial numbers of GOP voters who liked his presidency are open to supporting someone else. But DeSantis also assures Trump voters he’s not piling on the ex-president. But he added: “Let me be very clear: President Trump was wrong on that day.

Vertical mergers have historically received less attention from regulators and the courts, but Wednesday’s draft guidelines explicitly say that the US government may consider certain kinds of vertical mergers to be harmful to competition. Spurred by an executive order signed by President Joe Biden in 2021, Wednesday’s draft updates are the result of more than a year of development. (The new draft guidelines, a copy of which CNN reviewed, do not directly reference the consumer welfare standard.) And the Justice Department lost its appeal to block a multimillion-dollar merger between two major sugar producers in another closely watched case. “Unfortunately, things don’t always go our way,” Khan said in response to questions about whether the FTC has exceeded its authority.

CNN —A federal judge will not block Microsoft (MSFT) from closing its $69 billion deal to acquire video game giant Activision Blizzard, a defeat for US regulators who had asked for a temporary injunction while legal challenges to the merger unfold. Microsoft could potentially finalize the deal with Activision in a matter of days, ahead of a July 18 contractual deadline, or the parties could mutually seek to extend that timeframe. During a five-day hearing last month in federal court, Microsoft executives including CEO Satya Nadella testified that properties such as “Call of Duty” would not be restricted from competitors following the deal’s close. UK officials also previously moved to block the Activision merger in April, citing some of the same concerns the FTC raised in its case and triggering an appeal from Microsoft. “Microsoft and Activision have agreed with the CMA that a stay of the litigation in the UK would be in the public interest and the parties have made a joint submission … to this effect.”

Lina Khan became chair of the Federal Trade Commission two years ago on a promise to bring bold action against the biggest tech companies. For too long, Ms. Khan said at the time, the agency had been a weak cop and needed to challenge behemoths like Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and Google in the courts to stem their growing power. But on Tuesday, Ms. Khan suffered the biggest blow yet to her hallmark agenda. That followed a loss in February, when a judge rejected an F.T.C. Ms. Khan’s critics are more emboldened and are speaking out more loudly to poke holes in her take-it-to-the-courts strategy, saying the losses are not even partial wins — they’re just losses.

Kim Kardashian has spent her career on camera and red carpets, but the origins of her shapewear company Skims are far less glamorous. For years, the reality star hunted for undergarments to match her skin tone, but most brands only sold products in one or two shades. She'd spend the moments before high-profile events scrambling, trying to dye her own clothing darker with home remedies. "I used to take my shapewear and dye it with tea bags and coffee in the bathtub," Kardashian, 42, told Time magazine in a recent interview. The company built a brand around inclusivity: It sells bras, underwear, dresses and more in 10 skin tones and a broad variety of sizes.

In 2021, Judge Judith Sheindlin, the razor-tongued court show star, decamped from the dying medium of daytime broadcast syndication and joined Amazon for a streaming-era experiment. Fewer people were watching traditional daytime television, including programs like “Judge Judy.” Was it because they were tired of the content? To find out, the company hired Judge Sheindlin to produce and star in a new court show, “Judy Justice,” and made it available on Freevee, a little-known, free streaming service supported by advertising. “It was a risk,” Judge Sheindlin recalled over lunch this month, “but one that intrigued me.”“Judy Justice” quickly became Freevee’s No. As she builds a mini empire at Amazon, Judge Sheindlin is also adding to what has become known as the Nepo-Verse.

BERLIN, June 8 (Reuters) - Reality star Kim Kardashian's arrival at a gathering of the globe's top deal brokers in Berlin failed to dispel their dark mood as the rising cost of money puts the brakes on the private equity industry. But private equity is currently experiencing one of its toughest runs since coming of age in the 1980s as rapid rises in interest rates to combat inflation make the debt that underpins the industry scarce and expensive. "It has been easier in the past, deal flow is reduced significantly...we have to pedal harder," said Jose Pfeifer, who leads Investcorp's European private equity group, on the sidelines of SuperReturn. "Europe is doing better than expected...we are seeing opportunity in corporate carve-outs," said Marco De Benedetti, co-head of Europe private equity at Carlyle (CG.O). Emmanuel Laillier, head of private equity at Tikehau Capital, said that makes it hard to read the level of competition, although there is more flexibility in the M&A process.

Pierce, who allegedly received nearly $250,000 in EMax tokens as payment for touting the investment, paid $1.4 million in February to settle the SEC’s allegations of deceptive securities promotion. The new ruling, Masson said, should serve as a blueprint for crypto investors who contend they were duped by celebrity promoters. The beefed-up amended complaint convinced the judge that investors had plausibly accused the celebrity influencers of doing just that: exerting influence over their followers by endorsing EMax tokens. Fitzgerald’s previous decision dismissing claims against Kardashian and the other EMax promoters, Masson said, might have created an impression that celebrities can’t be held responsible for allegedly deceptive crypto touting. “You cannot get away with this.”Read more:Kim Kardashian, other celebrities beat EMax crypto investors' lawsuitKim Kardashian pays $1.26 million fine for paid crypto ad, SEC saysOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Frankel crossed out that section of the contract, and Bravo agreed to her terms, she said. A year later, Frankel founded Skinnygirl, which was initially built around selling pre-packaged, low-calorie margaritas. Shortly after, Frankel sold Skinnygirl Cocktails to Beam Global for an estimated $100 million dollars, keeping the rights to the "Skinnygirl" name.

The FTC had argued that Meta Platforms Inc. purchase of Within Unlimited would hurt competition in the market for virtual-reality fitness products. WASHINGTON—The Federal Trade Commission on Friday dropped its last remaining effort to block Meta Platforms Inc.’s acquisition of a virtual-reality startup, handing a final victory to the Facebook parent. The announcement that the agency was abandoning an administrative proceeding against the deal came less than a month after a federal judge denied the FTC’s request for a court order halting Meta’s purchase of Within Unlimited. That ruling by U.S. District Judge Edward Davila didn’t directly affect the parallel challenge brought by the FTC in its in-house administrative court, and it had been unclear if the agency would push forward with the administrative case.
