U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib, the first and only Palestinian-American congresswoman, is a Detroit native, despite posts suggesting that she was not born in the U.S. and should be deported. The Biographical Directory of the U.S. Congress says that Tlaib was born in Detroit on July 24, 1976. But those vigils have told starkly differing stories about the war, and also about Rashida Tlaib, who represents the area and is the only Palestinian American in Congress. Khalid Turaani, a Palestinian-American activist, compared Ms. Tlaib’s censure to that of Joshua Reed Giddings, a congressman and abolitionist who was censured by his House colleagues in 1842 for introducing resolutions opposing the slave trade. Since Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7, no American politician save for President Biden has featured more centrally in arguments over the Israel-Hamas war than Ms. Tlaib. Interviews in Ms. Tlaib’s district revealed a split-screen view of the war in Gaza and laid bare the grievances that have shaped it. But for Ms. Tlaib, who has staked out a position that alienates many of those constituents, it could be unbridgeable.

“This is pursuing a proven and failed strategy,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said in a recent radio interview. Calls for a cease-fire by Ms. Ocasio-Cortez and others drew a stern rebuke from the White House, and she faced backlash for voting against a bipartisan resolution that expressed strong support for Israel. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, who did not agree to an interview, met in Washington last month with the families of Jewish hostages kidnapped by Hamas. was trying to infiltrate the Democratic Party “to impose the ideological litmus tests on Israel” and “cleanse” those who disagree with them. It was also the most bipartisan censure vote in nearly 13 years, garnering the support of 22 Democrats and the vast majority of the House Republican conference. Our present-day censure warsUnder their new majority, Republicans changed House rules to allow individual members to force votes on resolutions. Nearly two dozen of Greene's GOP colleagues voted that down, leading Republican Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia to introduce a narrower resolution that ultimately passed. Brian Mast of Florida for comparing Palestinian civilians to Nazis. "These censure resolutions are not appropriate an instances where people say things that we don't agree with," a frustrated Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland told reporters on Tuesday.

The comments ricocheted across the House Democratic Caucus – especially for the 15 House Democrats who didn’t vote for it, all of them members of color, some of them Muslim-Americans. An array of House Democrats are pushing unequivocal support for Israel, while a number of progressives have grown increasingly critical of the offensive impacting Palestinian civilians and are upping pressure on the Biden administration to call for a ceasefire. And he is also dealing with a push by Jewish House members to have a more prominent seat at the leadership table. Rashida Tlaib, the sole Palestinian American in Congress, over her remarks and actions in response to the Israel-Hamas war. The censure resolution, authored by Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., passed 234 to 188 with almost two dozen Democrats voting in favor of it. The measure censures Tlaib, D-Mich., for "promoting false narratives regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for calling for the destruction of the state of Israel." "It is a sad fact, but this type of antisemitic hate is being promoted by a small group of members in this body, chiefly Rep. Tlaib," McCormick said on the House floor before the vote. In a lengthy statement before the vote, Tlaib defended her comments and actions, arguing that she is the lone Palestinian voice in Congress and protected by free speech.

Twenty-two Democrats joined with most Republicans in the chamber to censure Tlaib for allegedly "promoting false narratives" on Hamas' Oct. 7 gun rampage in Israel and "calling for the destruction of the state of Israel." The motion was sponsored by Republican Representative Richard McCormick. The idea that criticizing the government of Israel is antisemitic sets a very dangerous precedent," Tlaib said. 2 Democrat in the House, told reporters on Tuesday that while he "strenuously disagreed" with Tlaib's remarks about Biden, he believed the censure motion was not productive.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib. Photo: Celal Gunes/Anadolu/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—House lawmakers voted Tuesday to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.), the only Palestinian-American in Congress, over comments she made about Israel that were widely criticized by colleagues. The censure resolution, which passed 234-188, centers on statements that Tlaib made after Hamas attacked Israel and Israel retaliated with strikes on Gaza. Critics said Tlaib’s “from the river to the sea” pro-Palestinian comments parroted language of anti-Israel groups, and she also repeated the now-discredited allegation of Israel’s culpability for a strike at a Gaza hospital. Opponents of the measure said Tlaib’s comments fell well short of censure, with allies saying lawmakers were ganging up on her unfairly.

The House voted on Tuesday to censure Representative Rashida Tlaib, Democrat of Michigan, formally rebuking the sole Palestinian American in Congress for her statements regarding the Israel-Hamas war. Four Republicans voted against censuring Ms. Tlaib, while one Democrat and three Republicans voted “present,” declining to take a position. After the gavel fell, Democratic lawmakers, mostly progressives, surrounded Ms. Tlaib on the floor and embraced her. Ms. Tlaib has been by far the most vocal member of Congress to do so. The debate pitted mainstream Democrats against the most progressive lawmakers in the House, many of them women of color who surrounded Ms. Tlaib on the floor as the censure was considered.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib will face a censure vote Wednesday after a Democratic effort to quash it failed. Six House Republicans voted with Democrats, but attendance issues on the Democratic side allowed the resolution to move forward with a majority of votes anyway. Democratic Rep. Brad Schneider of Illinois voted against tabling the resolution, while Rep. Susan Wild of Pennsylvania — the top Democrat on the House Ethics Committee — voted present. In the days since her last resolution failed, she has raged at the 23 Republicans who voted with Democrats to table it. The House passed a GOP-led resolution on Tuesday to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib over comments critical of Israel and in support of Palestinians amid Israel’s war against Hamas. The vote was 234 to 188 with four Republicans voting against and 22 Democrats voting in support of the censure resolution. Both censure resolutions reference the chant. But those reports were contradicted by American intelligence, which subsequently concluded that the Israel Defense Forces were not responsible for the explosion. Greene’s resolution accuses Tlaib of “lying about Israel’s responsibility for the attack.”In a statement on the two censure resolutions, Tlaib said, “It’s a shame my colleagues are more focused on silencing me than they are on saving lives, as the death toll in Gaza surpasses 10,000.

But few have embraced progressive Democrats’ demands for a complete and lasting cease-fire, even as pro-Palestinian protesters took to the streets over the weekend to demand a total cessation of hostilities. Most Democrats, including some of Congress’s most influential liberal leaders, have argued that a full cease-fire would give Hamas time to regroup and launch another assault on Israel. President, the American people are not with you on this one,” Ms. Tlaib said. Representative Elissa Slotkin, also a Michigan Democrat, insisted in a series of posts on the social media platform X that Ms. Tlaib apologize. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democrat of Florida, also criticized Ms. Tlaib’s use of the slogan, as well as her calls for a cease-fire.

Two Republican lawmakers have filed separate resolutions to censure Tlaib this week, after a similar effort failed last week. “I have been really careful, partly because our Michigan delegation is so small, and we work together,” Stevens told CNN. “Democratic Rep. Brad Schneider is circulating a statement condemning Tlaib’s recent comments but stopped short of saying he supports a censure resolution. Last week, 23 House Republicans opposed a Tlaib censure resolution led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. But a censure motion is not the way to do it.”The proposed Tlaib censure has sparked a tit-for-tat among lawmakers looking to target one another across the aisle.

President, the American people are not with you on this one,” Ms. Tlaib says in the video. Dearborn, Michigan CNN —In 2020, Eman Hammoud was one of thousands of Michigan Muslims who helped President Joe Biden beat Donald Trump. A month ago, the Palestinian American immigration lawyer had no doubts she would support his campaign again in 2024. Michigan has more than 200,000 Muslim American voters — 146,000 of whom turned out to vote in 2020 –— according to an analysis by Emgage, an organization that seeks to build the political power of Muslim Americans. “That just proves that the Biden administration needs the Muslim vote to win,” said Nada Al-Hanooti, the Michigan executive director of Emgage Action. “We felt that the rhetoric, including from the White House, was very unhelpful and in fact potentially dangerous,” Alzayat said.

Bowman, Lee, Omar and Tlaib also were among the 17 sponsors of Bush’s resolution asking the Biden administration to call for a ceasefire. Challenges to Bush and the others were possible even before the Hamas attack on Oct. 7 or Israel’s subsequent attack on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It is unfortunate, Andrabi said, that the House Democratic leadership has not taken a stronger stance against AIPAC’s efforts to knock off rank-and-file Democrats. It remains unclear whether House Democrats will help incumbents fend off primary challengers through campaign fundraising arms. Before Oct. 7, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., issued statements of support for Omar and others, saying he will support the reelection of every House Democratic incumbent, regardless of ideology.
