Why I’m Rooting for Haiti

If you’ve read this column regularly over the last few years, my rooting interests should be clear by now. The players and teams who toil hard for the simple chance, however slim, of winning. With the Women’s World Cup now in full flight, most attention has gone to the venerable teams like France, Brazil and Germany. Hats off to all those teams, each talent-blessed and well-funded by their national soccer federations and by business conglomerates. But through the early goings of this year’s group stage, with eight teams making their World Cup debuts, long shots have been having their moments.

Opinion: Messi mania meets USWNT three-peat fever

On the other side of the world in Auckland, the USWNT took down World Cup newcomer Vietnam 3-0. It was nonsense to worry about what to watch or whether Messi would upstage the women. MLS chief Don Garber, for one, says he’s not worried about the impact Saudi money could have on the ability of the MLS to expand into markets outside the US, especially as it failed to win Messi. Friday may have been the first time in his life that Messi was someone else’s opening act. The USWNT did what was expected, beating a lesser team in Vietnam, but they also have a lot of work in front of them.

The four-times champions have put their trust in the next generation this year and were rewarded with a showstopping performance from the 22-year-old forward, who also provided the assist for co-captain Lindsey Horan's goal in the second half. "We tried to be more tactical, skillful," Vietnam coach Mai Duc Chung told reporters via a translator. The U.S. face the Netherlands on Thursday in their second Group E game, a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final, while Vietnam next play Portugal. "The first one is in the books and the focus immediately shifts to game two," Andonovski said.

No country has ever won three straight World Cups but U.S. fans will accept nothing less from the world's top-ranked side. Andonovski is banking on a new generation of talent in Australia and New Zealand, as he welcomed 14 World Cup first-timers to the 23-player squad. Andonovski has previously said the days of such lop-sided triumphs are long gone and that his squad were prepared to face "the best Vietnam team that has ever been on the field". "We're certainly going to come out with a team that will give us the best chance to win every game." The United States will face the Netherlands in their second Group E match next week in Wellington.

Anson Dorrance knew he was a pioneer during his eight years as head coach of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT). Any understanding of how and why the USWNT is women’s soccer’s dominant force, a four-time Women’s World Cup winner and favorite to win the next edition currently taking place in Australia and New Zealand, must start with Dorrance, the groundbreaker and the bricklayer. Five years later, the first Women’s World Cup was held in China – not that it was initially labelled a World Cup as world governing body FIFA worried it might not be a success. A third-placed finish followed at the 1995 Women’s World Cup, and then came the Atlanta Olympics a year later. The success of 1999 would lead to the world’s first professional women’s soccer league, the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA).

PinnedThe World Cup is always about expectations, but reputations count for a lot, too. The United States women’s team, which plays Vietnam at 9 p.m. in its first match of the tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, knows this, of course. Its chase for a third consecutive World Cup championship — and fifth overall — opens today with a game against Vietnam. The United States team that arrived at this World Cup is not the same one that rolled into France four years ago and beat all comers. Rose Lavelle, who had two that day in Reims, is finally fit again after months away from the team, Andonovski said.

CNN —Soccer players at the 2023 Women’s World Cup will on average earn just 25 cents for every dollar earned by men at their World Cup last year, a new CNN analysis found. In addition to prize money, FIFA committed to paying $42 million to the federations and players’ clubs for Women’s World Cup preparations. Havana Solaun (R) and Jamaica are appearing at their second ever Women's World Cup. But for the players, equal pay encompasses more than simply closing this gap to the salaries enjoyed by male footballers. June 2023 A record $110 million prize pot negotiated for the Women’s World Cup, at least $30,000 guaranteed for every player.

CNN —The 2023 Women’s World Cup Championship begins this week in Australia and New Zealand, and will be, for all appearances, a victory lap for gender equality in sports. Additionally, not all the physiological evidence lines up in men’s favor when it comes to athletic performance. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that the most popular sports worldwide are those that also most exaggerate underlying gender differences. Would the gap in athletic performance persist if girls truly had the same opportunities as boys to play at all levels? In 2023, as we enjoy the spectacle of mega-athletes like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, it’s time to rethink our stories about gender and athletic performance.

The third time around, Megan Rapinoe’s reaction to a potentially career-ending knee injury went no further than an eye roll. She had torn her anterior cruciate ligament. She had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee at age 21, when she was a breakout star in her sophomore year at the University of Portland. At that time, she felt what she called “the fear” — the worry that it might all be over before it had begun. A year later, she had done it again: same ligament, same knee, same arduous road back.

The Americans are pursuing an unprecedented third consecutive title with Sullivan among 14 World Cup first-timers, nearly twice as many as in the U.S. team that competed in 2015. But veteran defender O'Hara believes experience on the World Cup stage does not necessarily translate to impact on the field and pointed to Sullivan, who was sharing the stage with her at a news conference on Tuesday, as a prime example. "Andy is bringing something very different than I was bringing as a player in my first World Cup," said O'Hara, who is competing in her fourth. Rapinoe, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2019, announced recently that this would be her last World Cup. The United States open against Vietnam on Saturday.

MELBOURNE, July 18 (Reuters) - Bigger, bolder and breaking new ground, the Women's World Cup kicks off in Australia and New Zealand on Thursday with the United States bidding to extend their golden era by winning an unprecedented third straight title. Four years on from dominating in France, the top-ranked Americans remain favourites to secure a record-extending fifth World Cup triumph with a new generation of players. However, the landscape has changed irrevocably through the World Cup cycle, with money, talent and professionalism shifting to the sport's traditional European heartlands. Olympic champions Canada, who upset the U.S. in the Tokyo Games semi-finals, also cannot be discounted as they look to give 40-year-old Christine Sinclair a first title at her sixth World Cup. Other players say the money is not nearly enough, given the $440 million prize pool for the men's World Cup.

The Matildas called out gender disparity in World Cup prize money in a video message released on Monday, ensuring the topic will stay front-and-centre days before the tournament kicks off on their home turf and in New Zealand. The team went on strike in 2015 to demand better pay and have received the same minimum percentage of prize money for tournaments as their male counterparts since 2019. The statement comes amid upheaval across women's soccer, with players demanding better pay and playing conditions across the globe. The governing body previously said it aimed for prize money parity by the next World Cups in 2026 and 2027. Critics of transgender inclusion in women's sport say going through male puberty imbues athletes with a huge physical advantage that transition does not mitigate. The U.S. women's team, including Rapinoe, famously lost 5-2 to an under-15 FC Dallas boys team in an informal training match in 2017. In much of the world, trans people are just lucky to stay alive. LGBT advocates say the debate over transgender inclusion in women's sport has also made for an increasingly hostile environment for gender diverse people in North America. According to LGBT website Outsports, a record of at least 87 out players will compete at the World Cup, more than double the 38 who played in the 2019 version.

CNN —Trinity Rodman scored twice as the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) beat Wales 2-0 on Sunday in its final warmup game before the Women’s World Cup. Rodman, the daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman, came on as a second half substitute before scoring a brace late in the game. In 2021, Rodman made history after becoming the youngest woman ever selected in the NWSL draft. She was named NWSL Rookie of the Year later that year as she helped her team lift the NWSL title. Rodman made her highly-anticipated debut for the national team in 2022 and is part of a new generation of players looking to cement the USWNT’s legacy as the greatest team in women’s soccer.

And now on the eve of her final Women’s World Cup, Rapinoe has taken aim at recent policies that aim to ban transgender women from competing in women’s sports. “We as a country are trying to legislate away people’s full humanity,” she told Time magazine in an interview. In recent months, transgender women’s participation in a number of sports has been prohibited with the introduction of new regulations. The House bill would prohibit transgender women and girls from playing on sports teams consistent with their gender identity. “I see trans women as real women.

Megan Rapinoe began her long goodbye with the equivalent of a homecoming. In the decade and a half since she became a professional soccer player, Rapinoe’s career has taken her to soccer clubs on two continents, to Olympic Games on three and, soon, to a fourth World Cup. Rapinoe, 38, grew up in Redding, Calif., about 250 miles north of the site of Sunday’s game, PayPal Park in San Jose. She estimated that about 40 of her family members and friends had made the trip south to see the United States beat Wales, 2-0, in its final game on American soil ahead of the Women’s World Cup that starts later this month in Australia and New Zealand. “This is the closest that I’ll ever get to play to Redding in my career,” Rapinoe had said on Saturday.
