Trump promotes false Harris AI crowd size conspiracy
  + stars: | 2024-08-11 | by ( Rebecca Picciotto | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
U.S. Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks to supporters during a campaign rally in Romulus, Michigan, U.S., August 7, 2024. Former President Donald Trump on Sunday falsely accused his November election opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, of using AI technology to fabricate images of the crowd sizes at her rallies, amplifying an unfounded conspiracy to explain the strong enthusiasm for the new Democratic ticket. The Harris campaign rejected the accusation, maintaining that the image is "an actual photo of a 15,000-person crowd for Harris-Walz in Michigan." But Trump's peddling of the conspiracy was among several social media tirades against Harris over this weekend. Last week, the Harris campaign organized a barnstorming of seven battleground states across the country, though several of those stops were postponed due to inclement weather.

For example, this season started with the banks roaring higher on great numbers, legitimately great numbers led by a phenomenal Bank of America quarter. The later just made no sense because it is pulling away from Intel on the low end and if Nvidia really does have production problems then AMD is the de facto winner. Céline Dion’s management team and record label, Sony Music Canada, said the use of her world-renowned hit “My Heart Will Go On” at a Donald Trump campaign rally in Montana on Friday was “unauthorized.”A video of Dion performing the 1997 song was broadcast at the Trump and JD Vance rally in Bozeman, Montana, on Friday evening. In a statement on X, the Canadian musician’s team said Saturday they became aware of the Republican campaign’s use of the “video, recording, musical performance, and likeness of Celine Dion” singing the song. “In no way is this use authorized, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use,” the statement read. Dion isn’t the first artist to reject the Trump campaign’s use of their music. “Me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies,” the musician said at the time.

That includes the Jan. 6 and 2020 election interference case brought by special counsel Jack Smith. If Harris wins the election in November, Trump’s Jan. 6 case — though weakened by the Supreme Court — will continue to move toward trial. She is also likely to avoid much discussion of Trump’s handling of classified documents: While a Trump-appointed federal judge dismissed a federal case involving his alleged mishandling of classified documents, the Justice Department has appealed and the case could ultimately survive. While those rules are binding only on the Justice Department, part of Harris’ pitch to voters is that she would respect the lines between the Justice Department and the White House that have existed for decades, since the Watergate scandal. During the Biden administration, the Justice Department appointed another special counsel, a former Trump appointee, who secured the conviction of Biden’s son Hunter Biden on gun charges.

Trump campaign says it has been hacked

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s campaign said Saturday in a statement that it had been hacked. When asked whether the Trump campaign had been in contact with law enforcement, a campaign official said it would not discuss those kinds of conversations. Politico reported it had received emails that contained internal communications from a senior Trump campaign official and a research dossier the campaign had put together on Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance. The dossier included what the Trump campaign identified as Vance’s potential vulnerabilities. In 2016, days before the Democratic National Convention, WikiLeaks published nearly 20,000 emails from the Democratic National Committee server.

Canadian singer Celine Dion on Saturday bashed former President Donald Trump for using her song "My Heart Will Go On" at his Montana campaign rally without her permission or endorsement. Dion's management team quipped, spurring mocking social media posts about the Trump campaign using music from a movie about a sinking ship. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Harris has been using Beyoncé's song "Freedom" during her campaign rallies, which the pop star reportedly gave the vice president permission to use.

It was meant to be another night of violence at the hands of the far right. “It shows that when everyone comes out to support, their numbers dwindle.”Large crowds gathered at an anti-racism protest in Walthamstow on Wednesday, where far-right violence had been expected. A wild week of trading on Wall Street ended with the S & P 500 back roughly where it started, but the lessons learned by whipsawed investors over those five days could determine what happens next. The S & P 500 had its worst day since 2022 on Monday, and then its best since 2022 on Thursday. But with the S & P 500 ending the week down less than 0.1% in a calm session on Friday, the market seems to have stabilized. .SPX 5D mountain The S & P 500 finished the week nearly flat. New York CNN —After a prolonged period of calm, financial markets went into a tailspin this week. One trigger for the selloff was the unraveling of the Japanese yen carry trade. If you are Vice President Kamala Harris, another Democrat or any other person who happens to want Harris to become president, the last two weeks and five days have probably felt like a dream. There is a tougher reality for Harris, though, belied by the euphoric haze. She has smashed fund-raising records and held overflowing rallies, and she seems to be tugging key swing states her way. But as Harris wraps up a battleground campaign tour with her brand-new running mate this weekend and turns her attention toward the Democratic National Convention this month, fresh challenges are in the offing. And the short campaign leaves a candidate who is still introducing herself to voters with little time for do-overs.

Expensive Big Mac meals and fears of surge pricing at grocery stores have put food chains and consumer product companies in politicians' crosshairs. Walmart , McDonald's and Kroger are just a few of the companies that have found themselves in the debate over high inflation in the 2024 election. Democrats — particularly those like Casey who are trying to win races in competitive swing states — are trying to capitalize on frustration against companies over inflation. (The source of the data is unclear, and McDonald's has denied that its average prices have risen that much.) The criticism could also add to the pressure companies face to show they can lower prices or offer value.

They are part of Louisville’s burgeoning tenants union, which mobilizes the residents of low-income apartment complexes, rural trailer parks and gentrifying neighborhoods to challenge the corporate landlords that they say have devastated affordable housing. Midsize cities like Louisville contain many of the fault lines that created America’s housing crisis: gentrification, federal development schemes and redlining. If this country’s affordable housing crisis can be solved here, it could establish a template for helping the nation’s poor and marginalized find stability. Josh Poe, 47, and Jessica Bellamy, 36, founded the Louisville Tenants Union in 2022 because they believe that organizing is the answer to the nation’s housing woes. “Tenant organizing,” Poe told me with pastoral conviction, “will be to the 21st century what labor organizing was to the 20th century.”

Vice President Kamala Harris will set out this week on a swing-state campaign blitz, giving her a far heavier travel schedule than her opponent, former President Donald Trump. Harris’ travel this week will take her to seven states in less than a fourth of the time. Reached for comment, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung pointed to the overall difference in the number of Trump and Harris campaign trips. Harris' campaign swing is also consistent with how candidates typically pick up the pace as the election draws closer, said Aleigha Cavalier, a Democratic strategist at the strategy and marketing agency Precision Strategies. But she said Harris' travel pace compared to Trump's and Biden's is "a real advantage."

How 2024 Became the Zoom Election
  + stars: | 2024-08-05 | by ( Kevin Roose | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
A month ago, if you had asked me which tech platforms would play a major role in the 2024 presidential campaign, I might have said TikTok or Facebook. I may have even theorized that X would still play a role despite its hard-right turn under Elon Musk’s ownership. What I wouldn’t have guessed is that this year’s breakout campaign tech would be Zoom — the unassuming videoconferencing app made famous during the pandemic and kept aloft since then by legions of remote workers dialing into meetings. But over the past several weeks, it has become a critical piece of campaign tech for Democrats hoping to elect Kamala Harris. Star-studded Zoom rallies have drawn hordes of viewers, raised tens of millions of dollars and given enthusiastic Democrats an easy way to get involved.
