Vance declined to state whether Trump lost the 2020 race and brought up Facebook, which Trump has repeatedly criticized. Tim Walz and Sen. New York CNN —Toilet paper shortages in stores across America are giving folks nightmarish reminders of the pandemic era. But the lack of toilet paper isn’t a direct result of a major port strike Tuesday. Reports of shortages filled social media Tuesday, showing empty shelves where toilet paper and, to a lesser extent, paper towels were supposed to be. The overwhelming majority — more than 90% by some estimates — of US toilet paper consumption comes from domestic factories. Any toilet paper hoarded today will last until the next round of panic buying, even it happens years from now.

White House officials on Friday met with representatives from the consortium, the US Maritime Corporation, to encourage the association to stay at the negotiating table. President Joe Biden has sent a clear message that he has no plans to do the latter. Without taking that move, there’s not much else the White House can do. “The administration is using its bully pulpit, and has been for a while,” says John Porcari, who served as the White House supply chain czar under Biden. “In political terms, there’s no good time for a strike,” the former official said.

Passengers arrive at the Beijing railway station on the first day of peak travel ahead of the National Day holidays in China's capital city on Sept. 29, 2023. China is expecting to see more travelers during Golden Week, but the country's persistent economic woes will likely continue to weigh on overall spending this holiday season. Prices for both domestic and outbound flights during the National Day period declined compared to last year, according to report by Trip.com released last month. During the Golden Week holiday last year, China saw domestic tourism revenue reach 753 billion yuan ($107.37 billion). By comparison, a single-day record of 20.7 million trips were made on May 1, the start of China's Labor Day holiday.

DALLAS — Southwest Airlines executives on Thursday outlined for Wall Street their vision to boost profits: extra legroom seats starting in 2026, assigned seating, international partnerships and overnight flights. Southwest’s new plan comes as its leaders seeks to fend off activist Elliott Investment Management, which has called for leadership changes. He had served as CEO of AirTran, the airline Southwest combined with in 2011, and was a consultant to Southwest after the merger. Southwest has supported Jordan despite calls for his replacement by Elliott, which didn’t immediately respond to the airline’s plan it laid out on Thursday. A chemical gas leak from a rail tanker near Cincinnati prompted fears of an explosion and evacuation orders for people within at least a half-mile radius of the incident. Firefighters try to contain a dangerous chemical leak from a train car in Whitewater Township, Ohio. The threat for the community 22 miles east-northeast of Cincinnati is that the rail car tank has been heating up and will explode if it continues, Siefke said. It wasn't yet clear who owns the rail car or its cargo, officials said Tuesday night. Whitewater Township and Hamilton County officials said the situation will likely remain static overnight as they await input from environmental agencies.

Russia's military is advancing on the battlefield in Ukraine, but at home the Kremlin appears to have suffered a number of fiery setbacks that are captured in new satellite imagery: A failed test of a new missile, and a wave of Ukrainian strikes that set ablaze arms depots deep inside the country. “I think that we are closer to the peace than we think,” Ukrainian Zelenskyy said in an interview with ABC News that aired Monday. Each of the efforts, in varying ways, faces obstacles. The nation’s top leader, Xi Jinping, will need close cooperation from border countries, some of which are politically volatile, like Kyrgyzstan, or internationally isolated, like North Korea. Neighboring countries that have long been wary of China, like Vietnam, will need to be reassured. But others have warned of Chinese domination of the Laotian economy. The new initiatives would also be expensive, and China has begun emphasizing smaller Belt and Road projects elsewhere.

The Teamsters on Wednesday declined to endorse a candidate for president, the first time in decades that the union hasn't backed a candidate in the presidential election. It found that almost 60% of rank-and-file union members preferred to endorse Trump, while 34% backed Harris, according to an electronic member poll. The law forced union workers to accept a union contract that had been brokered by the Biden administration. The union endorsed Biden in 2020. CNN —Air Canada said early on Sunday it had reached a tentative agreement with its pilots union over a new four-year collective agreement, in a last-minute deal that will avert a near-term strike or lockout. Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, which operate nearly 670 flights per day carrying about 110,000 daily passengers as well as freight, will now continue flying as normal, the airline said. Air Canada said in a statement the terms of its new agreement with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) representing more than 5,200 pilots will remain confidential, pending a ratification vote by its members expected to be completed over the next month. “After several consecutive weeks of intense round-the-clock negotiations, progress was made on several key issues including compensation, retirement, and work rules,” said First Officer Charlene Hudy, chair of the Air Canada ALPA master executive council. As a result, some United pilots now earn 92% more than their counterparts at Air Canada, the pilots’ association’s data shows.

Reuters —American Airlines flight attendants have ratified a new five-year contract with the airline, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) said on Thursday. With 95% of eligible flight attendants voting, 87% were in favor of the new deal, the union said. Flight attendants have also urged an end to the industry practice of not compensating crews for the time spent during boarding and waiting at the airport before and between flights. “Among the many improvements, the contract includes a new sit rig for compensation for long sits between flights, and American Airlines Flight Attendants become the first unionized workgroup to lock in pay for boarding,” APFA National President Julie Hedrick said. In addition to industry-leading wage rates, the new labor deal includes out-year wage increases and addresses many quality-of-life issues that the flight attendants have been advocating for, the union said.

And for Trump, flipping Pennsylvania — a state he narrowly won in 2016 but lost in 2020 — would give him a broader path to winning back the White House. Trump tried to bring fracking into focusIn 2019, when Harris was running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, she voiced support for a ban on hydraulic fracturing — or fracking. And recognizing the political potency of the issue, Harris on Tuesday sought to distance herself from her past comments by pointing to her record as vice president. From 1992 to 2012, only Democratic presidential nominees carried the state. In the state's Real Clear Politics polling average, Harris and Trump are both currently tied at 47.6% support.

New York CNN —Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw was fired for cause by the railroad’s board for “engaging in a consensual relationship with the company’s chief legal officer,” who was also terminated, the railroad announced Wednesday evening. Shaw had been CEO of one of the nation’s four largest freight railroads for just over two years. And he received praise from some past critics of the railroads for steps he took after the February 2023 derailment in East Palestine to improve railroad safety. Still, Norfolk’s actions related to the derailment received harsh criticism from Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigated the accident. She said Norfolk Southern’s actions following the derailment put first responders and neighbors of the derailment site at unnecessary risk.
