Experts say new steps China has agreed to will eventually reduce the flow of the deadly opioid fentanyl into the U.S., but that alone will not stem the overdose crisis killing Americans at a record rate. Synthetic opioids are now the biggest killers in the deadliest drug crisis the U.S. has ever seen. More than two-thirds of those deaths — more than 200 per day — involved fentanyl or similar synthetic drugs. It's in counterfeit pills and cocaine, in some cases causing overdoses in people who have no idea that they're using fentanyl. A growing number of places are allowing drug screening kits so users can find out if their drugs include fentanyl.

Rising rates and the possibility of a recession on the horizon have created a "mixed picture" for equity markets, according to one strategist — but several companies can look forward to markedly stronger earnings growth in the next year. "But, if you're looking for significant earnings expansion, I suspect, at a market level, that's probably less likely. The earnings growth rate for the S & P 500 was 3.7% year-on-year – the first quarter with year-on-year growth since the third quarter of 2022, the data showed. "What Eli Lilly is going to do with their weight loss drug is not dependent on whether the rates are 5.2% or 4.8%. "People didn't really talk about [Adobe] — everyone assumed that they were going to be a loser from AI," he said.

Which economic giant should emerging markets investors go for: China or India? India is the "best structural growth opportunity" in emerging markets, according to Malcolm Dorson, head of emerging markets strategy at Global X ETFs. LPL Financial's chief technical strategist, Adam Turnquist, added that India has emerged as an increasingly attractive alternative to China. Where and how to invest in India Investors could go for the "booming areas" in India — renewables such as hydrogen and solar energy, as well as agricultural tech, according to Sharma. But both Krosby and Dorson would advocate active management in emerging markets such as India, given political and economic complexities, among other reasons.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Each notification sounded its own little alarm, but was amplified many times over when the targets identified themselves publicly. The warning on their phones, sent by Apple on Monday, seemed stark: “State-sponsored attackers may be targeting your iPhone,” it said in part. This week’s episode seemed to fit into that pattern for his critics and many who got the warning from Apple. Rahul Gandhi, the foremost opposition leader, said many of his confidants in the Congress Party received the notification. Mr. Gandhi added that he takes illegal surveillance by the government for granted.

Equally importantly, he has often set the tone of their innings with the bat and is India's leading run-scorer in the tournament having overtaken Kohli. The 36-year-old, widely admired for his lazy elegance, fell for a duck against Australia in their tournament opener but has since been dominating the powerplay overs to put India in charge. Known for destroying rival attacks, Rohit proved he could rebuild an innings as well as he combined in a 91-run stand with KL Rahul to resuscitate India. Rohit did not get his second hundred of the tournament but his measured knock fetched him player-of-the-match award. Rohit Sharma saved India's blushes with a captain's knock of 87 in what initially appeared a below-par total of 229-9 on a tricky surface at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Put into bat, the hosts slumped to 40-3 in the 12th over before Rohit forged a 91-run partnership with KL Rahul (39) to arrest their slide. Suryakumar Yadav contributed a breezy 49 down the order and India's tailenders scored some useful runs towards the end to take them past the 225-mark. England were reduced to 52-5 inside 16 overs in a remarkable batting capitulation and were eventually bundled out for 129 in inside 35 overs with Mohammed Shami claiming 4-22 for India. The EPA said it also ordered Norfolk Southern to conduct additional investigations into oily sheen, or film, on water and sediments in two creeks in East Palestine. "Through this order, Norfolk Southern will take a thorough look at the waterways to ensure there are no lasting impacts from the derailment," EPA Regional Administrator Debra Shore said. Norfolk Southern said the order "formalizes the continuation of work that has been ongoing since the derailment under a different regulatory scheme. Several Fed officials have indicated that may work as a substitute to further rate rises, while still stressing rates will remain higher for longer. Over 80% of economists, 91 of 111, had no rate cut in their forecast until at least the second quarter of next year. That 55% majority slipped from over 70% in a September poll, extending a trend of rate cut calls being pushed to later. As recently as July, a majority of economists polled said the Fed would start cutting by end-March. All but two of 28 respondents to an extra question said the bigger risk was the first rate cut comes later than they expect.
