Trump's indictment was unsealed Tuesday, revealing he was charged with 34 counts. The indictment didn't clarify the underlying crimes Trump allegedly committed to justify felony charges. Trump was indicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection to a 2016 hush-money payment to the adult film star Stormy Daniels. "If I were the prosecution, I would ask for a gag order covering the parties and their attorneys," Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, told Insider. Indeed, House Republicans vowed revenge on Trump's behalf and said Tuesday that they would go after Bragg and President Joe Biden in light of Trump's indictment.
Former prosecutors told Insider the indictment against Donald Trump was underwhelming. They said the case could give Trump and his team fodder to argue it was politically motivated. Rep. Nancy Mace, a Trump critic, said DA Alvin Bragg's indictment made Trump a "martyr." They also said the 34 counts could be viewed as excessive — and even give Trump and his team fuel to argue he was being unfairly targeted. "Trump enjoys being the victim in all this, and that's what he's going to lean into," Joshua Ritter, a former Los Angeles County prosecutor and partner with El Dabe Ritter Trial Lawyers, told Insider.
The lawsuit brought by Trump's rape accuser E. Jean Carroll is expected to start in April. On Thursday, both sides filed a list of proposed questions to ask potential jurors. Former "Elle" advice columnist E. Jean Carroll is taking Trump to court in New York next month in a defamation and battery civil suit. In court documents filed Thursday, Trump's team proposed asking potential jurors whether they're familiar with the slogan #believewomen, and whether they agree with it. Neama Rahmani, president of West Coast Trial Lawyers, told Insider that while Trump's lawyers' questions around sexual assault are indeed meant to ascertain how jurors feel about sexual assault allegations and the #MeToo Movement, personal views are not enough to get most potential jurors dismissed.
The law — designed for going after the mob — makes sense for her investigation into Donald Trump, experts say. In her time in the district attorney's office, Willis has aggressively used Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization statute. One sprawling 56-count RICO case, against the rapper Young Thug's alleged gang, is in its second month of jury selection ahead of what's expected to be a nine-month trial. But if she were to bring a case, experts believe RICO charges are likely. Rahmani cautioned that a RICO case may make Willis look too aggressive.

Iranian officials believe the girls may have been poisoned and have blamed Tehran's enemies. Iran's interior minister said on Saturday investigators had found "suspicious samples" that were being studied. Similar protests were held in two other areas in Tehran and other cities including Isfahan and Rasht, according to unverified videos. Iran rejected what it views as foreign meddling and "hasty reactions" and said on Friday it was investigating the causes of the incidents. Schoolgirls were active in the anti-government protests that began in September.
The forewoman of Georgia's special grand jury investigating Trump gave a series of media interviews. Kohrs declined, however, to answer the question on everyone's mind: Whether the special grand jury, in its still-secret report, recommended criminal charges against Trump himself. Willis empaneled the special grand jury in May 2022. Fani Willis, right, will now choose whether to impanel an ordinary grand jury to consider charges against Trump. That extra step between Kohrs's special purpose grand jury, and another grand jury that has yet to be empaneled, is another reason why Kohrs's comments are of little consequence, Rahmani said.
Biden will deliver his second State of the Union address at about 9 p.m. (0200 GMT Wednesday). It will be broadcast live on major U.S. broadcast television networks and online by the White House and the House of Representatives. The speech could deliver Biden his largest television audience of the year. The White House has also invited Brandon Tsay, who disarmed a gunman responsible for a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California. Republicans have picked Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who served as White House press secretary under Donald Trump, to deliver their response.
Following are some of the guests expected to attend:* Brandon Tsay: Tsay was called a hero by authorities for disarming a gunman who shot dead 11 people during a celebration of the Lunar New Year in Monterey Park, California. The White House called it a "recognition of sustained U.S. support for Ukraine nearly a year after Russia launched its unprovoked attack." * The White House has also invited Paul Pelosi, husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "The attack reportedly was politically motivated, with the intruder's alleged intent to harm and kidnap the former Speaker," the White House said. The United States completed the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan in August 2021 after a 20-year war.

[1/2] Brandon Tsay displays the Metal of Courage award he received for stopping the Monterey Park shooter, at a Lunar New Year ceremony in Alhambra, California, U.S., January 29, 2023. Following are some of the guests expected to attend:* Brandon Tsay: Tsay was called a hero by authorities for disarming a gunman who shot dead 11 people during a celebration of the Lunar New Year in Monterey Park, California. * The mother of Tyre Nichols, RowVaughn Wells, and his stepfather, Rodney Wells: Nichols, a Black motorist, died after being beaten by police following a Jan. 7 traffic stop. * Former Afghan Ambassador to the United States, Roya Rahmani: Rahmani was Afghanistan's first female ambassador to the United States, serving in the post from December 2018 until July 2021. The United States completed the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan in August 2021 after a 20-year war.
The video of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols being beaten by Memphis police was released Friday. Legal experts told Insider the footage showed police met Nichols with force even though he wasn't initially resisting. The video released Friday of five Memphis police officers brutally beating Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop showed clear police misconduct and a breakdown in protocol for detaining someone, legal experts told Insider. "What I saw was certainly police misconduct," Joshua Ritter, a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney, former prosecutor, and partner with El Dabe Ritter Trial Lawyers, told Insider of the footage. However Neama Rahmani, president of West Coast Trial Lawyers and a former federal prosecutor, said there was "no question in my mind that murder charges are appropriate."
Prince Andrew wants to overturn his settlement with Virginia Giuffre, according to news reports. Giuffre claims Epstein sex-trafficked her to Andrew when she was 17 years old. Representatives for the prince and Giuffre did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment on Wednesday. Overall, Filitti described the idea of trying to overturn the settlement as a "foolhardy effort." "If Prince Andrew wants to rehabilitate his image, perhaps he should do so in a way that doesn't remind the public about the seamier aspects of his private life," Filitti said.
They said that criminal charges are rare even in accidental shooting deaths that take place in non-professional settings without safety protocols. Host Alec Baldwin arrives at the 2nd Annual NFL Honors in New Orleans, Louisiana, February 2, 2013. Experts interviewed by Reuters could not cite another instance in which criminal charges stemmed from an accidental shooting death on a film set. And civil suits against Baldwin that are pending have claimed systemic cost-cutting led to dangerous conditions on set, allegations Baldwin and the film's production company have denied. Involuntary manslaughter charges are most common in fatal traffic accidents involving extreme recklessness, such as intoxication or excessive speeding, according to experts.
Goldman Sachs says 2023 should be a decent year for stocks even if there's a recession. The firm's investment strategy group discussed its multi-asset views this week. The simultaneous nosedive in stocks and bonds last year doesn't debunk the theory behind the traditional 60-40 portfolio, according to Goldman Sachs. But Sharmin Mossavar-Rahmani, the head of the Investment Strategy Group (ISG) at Goldman Sachs, says that it's not that unusual for stocks and bonds to move in the same direction. In fact, he noted that if a recession begins and ends in 2023, stocks may not have a bad year.
NEW YORK, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Investment Strategy Group expects U.S. equities to generate positive returns for investors in 2023 even if the economy enters a recession, according to its outlook report released on Friday. The bank's wealth management team expect the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX) to end 2023 at between 4,200 and 4,300 points, up to 12% higher than its 2022 year-end level. Last year, the S&P fell 19.4% in its worst year since 2008, reflecting higher interest rates and recession fears. Goldman Sachs's team also considers indexes in Europe, Japan, Britain and emerging markets will deliver gains to investors this year. They said there is a "fog of uncertainty still facing investors", but overall the outlook seems more positive for both equities and bonds.
Top Republicans are calling on the FBI to search President Joe Biden's home as they did Mar-a-Lago. Trump has seized on the news about Biden, calling on the FBI to do the same to Biden's homes. Congressional allies including South Carolina Sen. Lindsay Graham called on the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to handle the case, as exists with the Trump documents. Unlike in Trump's case, there is no evidence that Biden or those around him resisted returning them. That evidence is lacking in Biden's case, Neama Rahmani, an attorney and former federal prosecutor told Insider.
Ye, aka Kanye West, hasn't replaced lawyers who abandoned him following his antisemitic tirades. In another case in Los Angeles county court, lawyers have been trying to track down Ye since October to serve him with a lawsuit. That deadline is fast approaching, with radio silence from Ye, court filings show. In yet another case, lawyers for a plaintiff trying to sue Ye can't even find the rapper to serve him papers. If Ye doesn't come to court with an answer to the lawsuit, he risks losing it by default.
Gen Z shoppers came out in full force during Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year. BNPL seems like an easy way to pay for purchases, but it's causing some young consumers to rack up debt. Despite predictions of a lackluster holiday shopping season this year, shoppers came out in full force during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. "One standout this Black Friday was the high turnout of Gen Z in stores," Kristen Classi-Zummo, apparel industry analyst with market research firm NPD, told CNN. Frequent BNPL use has led some young shoppers to rack up thousands of dollars in debt and tank their credit scores.

Americans are increasingly finding alternative ways to satisfy their holiday wish lists as they continue to grapple with high prices and inflation. On Black Friday through Cyber Monday, buy now, pay later payments through companies such as Klarna, Zip, Zilch, Affirm and Afterpay jumped 85% compared with the week before, according to the most recent data from Adobe. Buy now, pay later revenue rose 88% for the same period. Lux called this year's spike in installment buying "horrible, and a real statement on how stressed the economy is, especially for the average American." Heading into November, 60% of Americans reported living paycheck to paycheck.
Three people who dislike Trump made it onto a jury deciding a criminal case involving his company. In fact, well over half of some 60 people polled as potential jurors this week said they had negative views of the former president. Potential jurors raise their hands during the jury seating process of the Trump Organization criminal tax-fraud trial on October 24, 2022. That's because juries are formed by slowly weeding out potential jurors that either side doesn't want on the jury, and the jury is formed with whoever is left. "You pick the right jury, you're going to win.
Police said there was no immediate indication of a motive for the attack that left Rushdie severely injured and on a ventilator after surgery. "I'm not aware that he's ever asked us to provide additional security, and I'm also not aware that he ever brought a security detail with him," she said. Pilar Pintagro/via REUTERSFor Rushdie's event, Chautauqua had requested and received security assistance from the New York State Police and the Chautauqua County sheriff's department, Hill said. Fisher said safety, diversity and differences of opinion had long been part of the fabric of the Chautauqua community. "Not only was he (Rushdie) a victim, but I think that open community is going to be a victim as well," Fisher said.
"Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged." Stunned attendees helped wrest the man from Rushdie, who had fallen to the floor. The Iranian government said in 1998 it would no longer back the fatwa, and Rushdie has lived relatively openly in recent years. 1/25 A general view shows UPMC Hamot Surgery Center, where novelist Salman Rushdie is receiving treatment after the attack, in Erie, Pennsylvania, U.S., August 12, 2022. "I felt like we needed to have more protection there because Salman Rushdie is not a usual writer," said Anour Rahmani, an Algerian writer and human rights activist who was in the audience.
