The 1976 book “The Hite Report” was a bestseller from the beginning. And it made its author, Shere Hite, a deeply polarizing public figure. But cultural memory can be short, especially when it comes to pioneering feminists — even ones who have sold 50 million books. “We love Shere Hite!” Newnham recalled Johnson and her producing partner Ro Donnelly responding. Seeing Hite walk out of an interview was not uncommon, especially after the publication of “The Hite Report on Male Sexuality” in 1981, which proved even more divisive.

But few outsiders are confident that the off-year wins will necessarily lead to Biden’s reelection or broader Democratic success next year. And Ohio Democrats don't expect Biden to compete in the state next year. To Biden aides, the results validated the strategy of sharpening the contrast with “MAGA Republicans” that helped Democrats outperform expectations in 2022. At the Chicago fundraiser, Biden noted that Beshear won reelection while “running on all the programs that were Biden initiatives.”Beshear kept some distance from Biden the day after he won. Jim Messina, who managed Barack Obama’s successful reelection against Republican Mitt Romney in 2012, said the Biden campaign does not need to change its tactics.

But those reports are now at odds with initial American intelligence, which subsequently concluded that the Israel Defense Forces were not responsible for the explosion. The dispute has laid bare long-standing and increasingly passionate disagreements among congressional Democrats over the party’s relationship with Israel – and, now, how to position the party as the deadly conflict in Israel and Gaza escalates. “That’s a vile position to take,” Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz told CNN, suggesting that Tlaib should review intelligence made available to House members. “That’s what’s been really painful – just continue to watch people think it’s OK to bomb a hospital, where children,” Tlaib said. “It’s truly disturbing that Members of Congress rushed to blame Israel for the hospital tragedy in Gaza,” Fetterman wrote.

Execs at a healthcare conference debated whether employers should pay for workers' weight-loss drugs. A Blackstone exec warned that the costly GLP-1 drugs could put some employers out of business. Panelists agreed that companies covering the drugs should do so as part of a broader support program. Andreas Mang, the CEO of Equity Healthcare, a division of Blackstone, said spending on these diabetes and weight-loss drugs, known as GLP-1 agonists, spiked 600% across Blackstone's portfolio in the last four years. The benefits firm Aon recently projected that employers' health-insurance costs will climb 8.5% next year, fueled in part by weight-loss drugs.

Liz Wessel has heard more than her fair share of startup pitches in her career as a founder. Now, Wessel is fulfilling that desire to invest and advise founders full-time, by joining the early-stage venture capital firm First Round Capital as the team's newest investment partner. Wessel had met many of the partners at First Round Capital while she was still the CEO of WayUp. She shared that Y Combinator's managing director Michael Seibel counseled her directly on her decision to jump into venture investing full-time. And given the increasingly tenuous state of the seed market, she'll be looking for startup founders that are particularly knowledgable about their customer base and have "strong business fundamentals," she said.

Progressives want Gavin Newsom to tap Rep. Barbara Lee to succeed Dianne Feinstein in the Senate. But such a move would reverse Newsom's earlier pledge to appoint a caretaker to the seat. "When Newsom appointed Padilla for VP seat he didn't appoint a caretaker," Khanna wrote. What you don't see on that list is anything that could attempt to compete with Amazon or Meta or Apple or Microsoft or Google . Whenever we look at a startup that would directly compete with a company like Amazon, the answer to the second question is always, "yes, definitely." I think Amazon is a great company. WASHINGTON, July 12 (Reuters) - Billionaire Elon Musk said on Wednesday he thinks China is interested in a cooperative international framework on artificial intelligence, from conversations he had when he visited China a few weeks ago. Musk made the remarks in a Twitter Space event with two U.S. congressmen, Democrat Ro Khanna and Republican Mike Gallagher. "China is definitely interested in working in a cooperative international framework for AI regulation," Musk said. He added that he has advocated for artificial intelligence regulations and oversight, including in his meetings in China. After meeting with officials during his China trip, Musk last month said the Chinese government would seek to initiate artificial intelligence regulations in China.

The event was billed as a conversation about the future of AI and came on a day that Musk launched his own new AI company, xAI. "I think a maximally curious AI, one that is just trying to sort of understand the universe is, I think, going to be pro-humanity," Musk said. He said the idea that a "digital superintelligence" could supplant the Chinese Communist Party itself seemed to resonate. Musk even said he believes the Chinese government would be open to collaborating on an international framework around AI regulation. Musk acknowledged he has "some vested interest in China" but ultimately believes "China is underrated" and that "the people of China are really awesome."

Elon Musk's warning for China: superintelligent AI could take control of the country. The billionaire said he told senior leaders about the potential threat during a recent China trip. Elon Musk says he told senior leaders in China that the creation of an AI-led "digital superintelligence" could usurp the Chinese Communist Party and take control of the country. Musk has raised several alarms about the potential dangers of AI becoming a kind of "superintelligence" with some capabilities that humans have. During his trip to China, Musk was treated like royalty, meeting senior government officials and business leaders to discuss popular topics such as AI.

Jarrett, 38, has $101,000 in student debt and was hopeful for Joe Biden's loan forgiveness. He told Insider he didn't think Biden's new plan for relief would deliver for borrowers. For years after graduating, he struggled to find steady employment and placed his initial student-loan balance of about $60,000 on forbearance. "I'm never going to be able to pay it down," Jarrett told Insider. And I certainly don't think that what he's doing now is going to address the issue either."

"Of course, we still believe in pursuing student-loan cancellation and acting faster than that 12-month period wherever possible," she added. Biden has not yet commented on those requests, but the Education Department recommends borrowers make payments because interest is set to accrue a month before payments begin again in October. Biden is planning to cancel student debt under a new law after the Supreme Court struck down his first plan. He'll use the Higher Education Act, which requires hearings and public comment. The Higher Education Act states that the Education Department can "enforce, pay, compromise, waive, or release any right, title, claim, lien, or demand" related to federal student debt. Given the new standards surrounding the Higher Education Act, it's not yet guaranteed that the same borrowers who benefitted from Biden's first proposal will qualify for the president's new plan.
