AdvertisementTo find the best hot chocolate, I tried Starbucks, Peet's, Coffee Bean, Dunkin', and Krispy Kreme. For those of us trying desperately to cut back on caffeine, the humble classic hot chocolate is a top-tier choice. Peet's Coffee Peet's Coffee offered a standard cup of hot cocoa made from chocolate powder and 2% milk. AdvertisementWithout the dairy, Dunkin' hot chocolate was noticeably less creamy, though it had an intense chocolate flavor — a likely benefit of the mocha syrup on top. Though notably missing any unique toppings such as a chocolate syrup swirl or marshmallow, which would undoubtedly heighten the experience, this hot chocolate was rich and creamy without being too sweet.

On a chilly November evening, wearing a light leather jacket and a scarf, Auli’i Cravalho was freezing as she plunged through a pair of gleaming doors into a candlelit bar in Midtown Manhattan. “I do not know how people layer here — I’m in total awe,” said Cravalho, who had just come from a photo shoot at a park on the Lower East Side. Like the plucky young heroine she voices in Disney’s “Moana” films — the sequel, “Moana 2,” hits theaters on Wednesday — Cravalho grew up in a tropical climate, in Kohala, Hawaii. But recently she had been living in an apartment in Hell’s Kitchen, with her partner and her best friend, while starring in the Broadway revival of “Cabaret.” Cravalho plays the singer Sally Bowles in the John Kander and Fred Ebb musical about a Berlin nightclub during the rise of fascism. That night would be her first back in the show after sitting out a few performances after she “had come this close to vocal hemorrhaging.”

Five years after the flames roared and the world held its breath, Notre Dame cathedral is coming back to life. CNN teams have visited Notre Dame several times since the fire, even as the work ploughed on through Covid-19’s stranglehold on France. But for those soon to revisit Notre Dame, this improbable victory is best seen by looking up. The oak frameworks and lead roofing of the nave, choir and transept of Notre Dame were reconstructed to look exactly like the originals, according to Rebuild Notre Dame. “We use the same materials, oak and stone, and with the same techniques.”The nave of Notre Dame cathedral.

Those who threw in the towel might be licking their wounds as growth stocks continue to outperform value dramatically. Instead, it builds a simple filter based on backtested factors dating decades to determine the key variables that have worked over time, says Ryan Kelley, CIO of the fund. For the Hennessy Cornerstone Mid Cap 30 Fund, that filter has been boiled down to a four-step process used for 21 years. "We absolutely just let the numbers dictate what we own, and it takes some discipline and it takes some trust in the process," Kelley said. By the time the filter process is complete, thousands of US stocks have been filtered down to about 125 to 150, which is still too much.

The higher rate of side gigs among remote workers, though small, could also stem from some evidence that productivity slows when workers are pushed to return to the office. Stanford economists found 10% lower productivity for fully remote work compared to fully in-person work. Some remote workers told BI they drive for Uber or DoorDash while working as accountants or analysts. AdvertisementBI has also reported on dozens of "overemployed" remote workers who secretly work multiple jobs to earn six-figure incomes. Many said they don't feel guilt for working multiple remote positions, even as remote roles become scarcer and harder to get.

Republicans in this year’s US presidential election gained ground with Latino voters, a fast-growing electorate in which more than a million become old enough to vote each year. Bank of England warns of risks from rise in global trade barriers

Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England (BOE), during the Monetary Policy Report news conference at the bank's headquarters in the City of London, UK, on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024. The Bank of England warned on Friday that higher trade barriers could hit global growth and feed uncertainty about inflation, potentially causing volatility in financial markets and pushing up borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. While U.K. households, businesses and banks appeared to be in good shape, the BoE report said, Britain's financial sector faced risks that were "particularly relevant" given the openness of the U.K. economy. "Uncertainty around, and risks to, the outlook have increased," the report said. Bailey also stressed the importance of minimum international financial standards in the wake of the Nov. 5 U.S. election.

In 2019 and 2020, the Container Store got a big boost from “Tidying Up,” the hit Netflix show from the home de-cluttering evangelist. Credit rating agencies rank the Container Store as one of the most financially distressed companies in the retail industry. The Container Store had been set to receive a much-needed $40 million financial lifeline from Beyond, the owner of Bed Bath & Beyond and Overstock.com, that would have put Bed Bath & Beyond products on Container Store shelves. “The rise of platforms like Temu have given consumers some much cheaper options for the type of products Container Store sells,” Saunders said.
