Legendary short seller Jim Chanos, who has decided to convert his hedge funds to a family office after nearly four decades, said he remains a firm believer in short-selling in this era of rampant corporate wrongdoings. In his final message to investors, the short seller best known for his bet against Enron before its bankruptcy in 2001, said there are still more than enough short opportunities for investors. Chanos has also bet against Tesla and Coinbase in recent years, but these positions turned out to be volatile and tough at times. The founder of Chanos & Co. said Coinbase runs an unsustainable model as it makes money from increased commission rates for retail investors. "It is no secret that the long/short equity business model has come under pressure and interest in fundamental stock pickers has waned," Chanos wrote in the letter.

"We believe the risk of a 'hard landing' for the economy is higher-than-expected." In that kind of a climate, Hartnett expects commodities, including copper and oil, to outperform, along with bonds and cash. "We are sellers of crowded 'no landing' plays into recession," Hartnett said, making a call that includes the "Magnificent Seven" tech stocks along with semiconductors, homebuilders and biotech. The firm is "buyers of 'hard landing' plays at onset of recession," he said, including REITs, banks, defensive stocks, small-cap stocks and China. Despite Hartnett's warnings, BofA overall is looking for a soft landing with easier monetary policy.

Based on the bank's monthly Global Fund Manager Survey, strategist Michael Hartnett created a list of "contrarian" outcomes and hedging opportunities. As of now, high-quality assets are expected to outperform in 2024, with only 6% of fund managers predicting otherwise, said Hartnett. Close to 90% of surveyed fund managers see elevated geopolitical risks in the coming year. For a contrarian outcome, Harnett says to trade as if oil prices will move lower still by shorting crude. TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares surged higher on Wednesday, cheered by a rally on Wall Street that was one of the best days of the year following a surprisingly encouraging report on inflation. “Accordingly, we expect GDP growth to slow from 1.7% this year to 0.5% in 2024,” he said in a commentary. Tuesday on Wall Street, the S&P 500 jumped 1.9% for its best day since April and hit a two-month high, closing at 4,495.70. Investors shouldn't be scared off by slower economic growth caused by higher-for-longer interest rates and inflation, according to JPMorgan Asset Management (JPMAM). For reference, JPMAM called for forward long-term returns of 4.3% in 2021. The firm added that productivity gains from AI will likely add a tenth of a percentage point to global growth in the next decade. The long-awaited reversal for international stocks won't happen overnight, JPMAM strategists said. The firm is highly optimistic about the asset class after its brutal multi-year selloff and expects 4.6% and 5.1% long-term returns for those groups, respectively.
