The New York Mets and superstar outfielder Juan Soto have agreed on a 15-year, $765 million contract, according to multiple reports Sunday. Cohen had shelled out $130 million for Max Scherzer and $86.7 million for Justin Verlander before he shipped both of the big-name pitchers away in 2023. Soto's arrival should strengthen the Mets' offense or at least lessen the blow of possibly losing first baseman Pete Alonso to free agency. Soto's addition is the Mets' most aggressive move yet to wrest the Big Apple spotlight away from the Yankees. Those are Chelsea’s next seven Premier League fixtures before they travel to face Manchester City on January 25. At a time when the other challengers are showing real fragility — Arsenal drawing with Fulham, Manchester City dropping points at Crystal Palace this weekend — Chelsea are pretty consistent. Wednesday is a bit juicier: big early 90s vibes with Milan vs Crvena zvezda, but for something a little more contemporary, there’s Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona and Juventus vs Manchester City. That’s the men: the Women’s Champions League is also in town and it’s bringing Valerenga vs Arsenal, Manchester City vs St Polten, Bayern Munich vs Juventus and Chelsea vs Twente. The jumble of fixtures we’ve come to expect of this competition throws up Viktoria Plzen vs Manchester United, Rangers vs Tottenham and Ajax vs Lazio.

Opinion TheKillings ofYoungMothersIt’s an hour before sunrise in New Orleans, and Markitha Sinegal is fighting with her boyfriend again. In Louisiana, where Markitha Sinegal lived, homicide is the second leading cause of death for pregnant and postpartum women. Homicide deaths are usually omitted from maternal mortality statistics because they aren’t considered sufficiently related to the pregnancy itself. But homicide isn’t a rare anomaly for pregnant and postpartum women — it’s one of their leading causes of death. Domestic violence is rooted in power and control, and pregnancy is a tether that can shift a relationship’s dynamic.

And now, after years of stasis in Silicon Valley, we have Sam Altman . To answer that question, I've spent weeks taking a Talmudic dive into the Gospel According to Sam Altman. Unlike Jobs, who bestrode the stage at Apple events dropping one-more-things like a modern-day Prometheus, Altman doesn't spew ego everywhere. AdvertisementAnother contrast with the tech gurus of yore: Altman says he doesn't care much about money. Altman doesn't know what the future will bring, but he's in a hurry to get there.

A high-profile violent crime typically sets social media abuzz with tips and theories from amateur internet sleuths, hunting for the alleged perpetrator. Thompson’s targeted killing has sparked online praise from people angry over the state of U.S. health care. A Gallup poll released Friday found that Americans believe health care quality is at a 24-year low. Those polled said health care coverage is even worse, with 54% saying it’s fair or poor. He’s also lobbied for policies that would restrict VA care and believes veterans should ask for fewer government benefits. “We want to have full choice where veterans can go wherever they want for care,” Hegseth told Trump on speakerphone as Shulkin listened, according to Shulkin’s 2019 memoir. For Shulkin, a rare “holdover” from President Barack Obama’s administration to Trump’s, this was “the worst-case scenario” for veteran health care, and one he had repeatedly warned Hegseth against.
