“And, I think, Camilla, Queen Camilla, has certainly earned the respect that she’s receiving. Prince William also took time off to support his wife, though he is now back at work. Camilla has helped pick up the slack, demonstrating the importance of her rehabilitation to Charles and the royal family. But the public mood has softened since Charles married the woman then known as Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005. I mean, Camilla has taken the lead in all of this and has performed admirably.”___Full AP coverage of Britain's royal family at https://apnews.com/hub/royalty

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Tuesday that he was “shocked and sad” to learn that King Charles III has cancer, but is relieved that the illness was caught early. Buckingham Palace announced Monday evening that the king has begun outpatient treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. Kate is still taking a break from royal duties as she recovers. Charles took the throne intending to preside over a slimmer monarchy with fewer senior royals carrying out ceremonial public duties. LONDON (AP) — The news of King Charles III's cancer diagnosis has refocused attention on the responsibilities of Britain's monarch and revived a central question about the country's centuries-old system of government: What does the king actually do? Under Britain’s constitutional monarchy, the king is head of state but must remain politically neutral and leave policy-making to the elected Parliament. Another of the monarch's visible duties as head of state is hosting world leaders during their visits to the U.K. Charles is also head of the Commonwealth, a loose association of 56 countries, most of them former British colonies or once under British rule. ___Find more of AP’s coverage of King Charles III at https://apnews.com/hub/royalty

So what does the news mean for Charles’s two sons, William and Harry? Will any of the king’s ‘public-facing duties’ fall to Prince William? Any of the small handful of working senior royals could theoretically be called upon to attend events in King Charles’s place and take on other duties while he receives treatment. Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, are expected to absorb some of them. But a great many of Charles’s duties are expected to fall to his son William, the Prince of Wales, who is the heir to the throne.

However, a royal source said there were no plans for Harry to meet his brother Prince William while he’s in London. The Sussexes emigrated to the United States after stepping away from royal duties in 2020. While the royal family are an institution, they are also a family. Prince Harry last saw his father when he attended the coronation at Westminster Abbey last May. The cancer diagnosis only 17 months into Charles’ reign has also become a moment of unity for the royal family.

A royal source said they don’t expect any Counselors of State - the senior royals who can stand in for Charles - will be needed next week. Currently, Princes William, Harry, Andrew and Edward, as well as Princess Anne, are able to fulfil Charles’ duties in his absence. The Princess of Wales was seen over Christmas with the family in Sandringham and appeared well at various public engagements, notes CNN royal historian Kate Williams. Her husband, Prince William, will juggle childcare while being by her side as she recovers, another royal source said. With all this in mind, the monarchy still needs a public facing royal and that will come in the form of Queen Camilla.

CNN —A new official portrait of King Charles III that will hang in public buildings in the United Kingdom has been unveiled. Public bodies such as courts, schools and councils can request free oak-framed copies of the portrait, which was taken by photographer Hugo Burnand. British photographer Burnand has long held close ties to the royal family, taking official pictures at Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation. He also took the official photos for both Charles and Camilla’s wedding in 2005, and William and Catherine’s wedding in 2011. “Official portraits of Queen Elizabeth II are currently on display in many public institutions, and the offering of the new official portrait of King Charles III will enable organisations across the UK to carry on that tradition,” the UK Cabinet Office said in a press statement last year.

LONDON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Britain's King Charles celebrates his 75th birthday on Tuesday and will use the occasion to launch a new scheme to tackle food poverty and cut down on waste. The king, who has spent more than five decades as an outspoken campaigner on environmental issues and supporter of a sustainable economy, will officially launch the 'Coronation Food Project', his mission to try to stop people going hungry. With his wife, Queen Camilla, Charles will spend his birthday visiting a surplus food distribution centre. He will meet major British supermarkets to see how his project can help redistribute food which would otherwise go to waste. The project says 14 million people in Britain face food insecurity, and as the rising cost of living has pushed even more into food poverty, charities say there has been a 38% rise in those using food banks for the first time in the year to March 2023.
