Alphabet shares hit a 52-week high Tuesday after showcasing its AI and machine learning capabilities at its annual Cloud Next event. Bank of America's Justin Post said the search company was "flexing its AI muscle," adding that its AI capabilities are a major customer selling point and should be a positive driver for the stock. Along with the hardware updates, Alphabet revealed pricing for a suite of AI-powered tools for enterprise customers. At $30 a month, Citi's Ronald Josey called the contribution "material over time," and said the event should mitigate any "remaining overhangs" on Google's Cloud AI capabilities. Correction: Google shares recently hit a 52-week high.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs released a note to clients late Monday, looking at what they called "The (AI) trade after the trade." Marvell Technology (MRVL), a former Club stock and current Bullpen stock, is also included. But, in addition to surveying the AI landscape, the Goldman note aims to answer the question: What is the trade after the trade? The common theme here is enhanced worker productivity; AI leading to revenue growth and lower labor costs, an obvious benefit to the bottom line. The various bundles are now as annoyingly confusing as cable, and cost basically the same. Cloud promises are being brokenFinally, there's the cloud, which promised cheaper and more secure computing for companies. In the roughly five years since going public, the company has spent about $3 billion on cloud services from Google and AWS. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsAug 16 (Reuters) - A scientist at Harvard used Google's cloud platform to clone a supercomputer for a heart disease study, in a novel move that other researchers could follow to get around a shortage of powerful computing resources and speed up their work. But cloud computing operations aren't designed to handle the demands researchers have. They are designed for millions of individual, relatively small computing tasks - things such as streaming video, serving webpages or database access. Modifying cloud infrastructure to behave like a supercomputer requires changes in the software, networking and physical design of the hardware, Magro said.

Microsoft still isn't disclosing the size of its Azure business, providing only the growth rate for the cloud business and leaving investors guessing how its revenue compares to Amazon and Google . But in its much smaller Dynamics business, which includes software for salespeople, marketers and customer-service agents, Microsoft has suddenly opted for greater transparency. In its annual report to investors last week, Microsoft disclosed Dynamics revenue in a table alongside other products for the first time. He also noted that Microsoft Sales Copilot, a tool capable of writing business-oriented email drafts, integrates with Dynamics as well as Salesforce's software. Partly motivated by Microsoft's AI capabilities, some companies are switching to Dynamics from Salesforce, said Manny Medina, CEO of sales software startup Outreach.

Goldman Sachs analyst Eric Sheridan reaffirmed a buy rating on Alphabet stock, with his $152 price target implying more than 24% upside. Citi's Ronald Josey maintained a buy rating on with a higher $153 price target, which amounts to more than 25% upside for Alphabet stock. "As revenue growth reaccelerates on an improving online advertising environment and management's greater focus on operating efficiencies, we look for margins to expand going forward as revenue growth consistently outpaces opex growth," Josey said. Microsoft shares were trading down as much as 5% on Wednesday, a day after the software maker issued worse-than-expected quarterly revenue guidance. Microsoft has been increasing its capital expenditures to get infrastructure in place to provide AI services to developers at other companies and roll out assistant capabilities to apps such as Word and Outlook. The extra spending cuts into Microsoft's cloud gross margin. "The messaging on Copilot was more about tempering rather than inflating expectations," wrote UBS analysts led by Karl Keirstead, which also has a buy rating on Microsoft. Raymond James' Andrew Marok and Mauricio Munoz, with the equivalent of a buy rating on Microsoft shares, had a similar tone.

Microsoft will report results for its fiscal fourth quarter after market close on Tuesday. Based on analysts' projections, Microsoft will close fiscal 2023 with revenue growth below 10% for the first time since 2017. Microsoft doesn't report Azure revenue in dollars. During the quarter, Microsoft built on its broad alliance with OpenAI to capitalize on fresh interest in artificial intelligence, following the November launch of the startup's ChatGPT chatbot. Activision shares have climbed past $92.50, close to the $95 that Microsoft agreed to pay, reflecting optimism that the deal is on track to close.

Revenues beat across the board, Azure's revenue growth decelerated in line with expectations, and companywide operating margins expanded nicely from last year. But total revenues fell a little less than expected, at 4%, mostly due to a 12% decline in Windows OEM revenue and a 18% drop in devices revenue growth. Gaming revenue grew 2%, with Xbox content and services revenue up 6%, offset by a 13% decline in Xbox hardware. In the productivity and business processes segment, revenue increased about 10% from last year thanks to a 15% increase in Office 365 Commercial Revenue growth. Microsoft sees Azure revenue growing 25% to 26% in constant currency, including roughly 2 points from all Azure AI services.

Morgan Stanley wants more partnerships with tech vendors focused on cloud, data, and AI. Two years before OpenAI ballooned into the artificial intelligence juggernaut it is today, Sean Manahan's team at Morgan Stanley met with what was then an up-and-coming research nonprofit. For its part, Morgan Stanley is capitalizing on its ties with OpenAI to supercharge the bank's lucrative wealth-management business. Morgan Stanley's tech strategy is about 80% buy to 20% building tech inhouse and the pipeline of tech vendors has exploded. Morgan Stanley, like every other finance firm on the Street, has also moved to the cloud.

Wall Street kicked off the week with bullish takes on several high-flying tech stocks in the portfolio — validating our decision to stick with these mega-caps heading into quarterly earnings. It's also important to understand that some price target raises are just chasing a big move, and that the price reaction to an earnings release has less to do with the results and much more to do with expectations. It's also why Citigroup also put AMD on a "negative catalyst watch," meaning it is negative on the stock heading into earnings. In the analysts' view, Apple has an opportunity to grow its revenue by seven times in the U.S. over the next decade to about $40 billion, while adding 170 million new users. Microsoft What the analysts say: Analysts at Mizuho reiterated their buy rating on Microsoft while taking up their price target to $390 from $360.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told fellow executives and board members last year that the software company aims to reach $500 billion in revenue by the 2030 fiscal year, more than doubling from its current size. Nadella described a goal of "20/20," involving 20% year-over-year revenue growth and 20% operating income expansion for the 2022 fiscal year and subsequent years. For 2022, Microsoft wound up reaching 18% top-line growth to $198.27 billion in revenue, and 19% operating income growth. In the memo, Nadella used the phrase Microsoft Plus to describe products aimed at consumers. "Our priority is to maintain growth above the market rate to extend our lead over GCP and close the gap with AWS," Nadella wrote in the accompanying document.

But success in applying AI, whether based on the most advanced machine learning (ML) or the latest generative AI leveraging foundation models, is not just measured in speed. Whether based on ML or foundation models, the more customized your AI models are to those priorities, the better you will be able to serve your customers and deliver real business value. A hybrid cloud architecture provides the data foundation for extending AI deep into the business. If the models contain bias, or if AI models are misleading, "hallucinate," or are not explainable, the risk and cost of reputational damage and regulatory fines could be high. KKR built a new client portal to replace a legacy one built using vendor tech. KKR had a problem with its client portal. When clients faced issues with the portal, KKR had no visibility into what was causing the problem and could only open a ticket with the vendor, he said. In 2020, KKR embarked on a total rebuild of its client portal, which eventually launched in the summer of 2021. The new portal was built on AWS, where KKR has already moved much of its technology and infrastructure.

Snowflake should emerge as a long-term artificial intelligence winner despite a host of near-term snowstorms, Wall Street analysts think. The cloud stock dropped more than 16% last Thursday after the company shared product revenue guidance that fell short of consensus expectations and results that indicated slowing growth. Even with these headwinds, many analysts remain positive on Snowflake's long-term trajectory, viewing an acquisition and the transition to the cloud as two catalysts for the stock. Deutsche Bank's Brad Zelnick said in a recent note that AI, among other developments, should drive customer stickiness and improved use cases. A murky future Not everyone seems optimistic about Snowflake's AI potential, however.

He says getting advertisements onto his site was simple, and now he gets payouts every month. That motivated me to add some new features and optimize the site for search engines. I couldn't find any good resources on the web or in the Google search results with the information I sought. This is where an ad network came in — using a network to sell ad space keeps the entire process passive. For a small web publishing business, monthly net profit can be as simple as ad revenue minus hosting costs.
The accelerated shift to cloud computing has boosted adoption of security software that can identify the spots where hackers can wage attacks. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian, right, arrives on stage as Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai exits during the Google Cloud Next event in San Francisco on April 9, 2019. Earlier this week, Alphabet said Google's cloud unit generated $191 million in operating profit, after losing a total of $4 billion in 2021 and 2022. Under Kurian's predecessor, VMware co-founder Diane Greene, critics said Google's cloud business hadn't matured enough to handle enterprises even as it was investing heavily to do so. The cloud division includes the Google Cloud Platform, which competes with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, and the Google Workspace productivity software bundle that goes head-to-head with Microsoft Office. Google Cloud technology chief Will Grannis said Kurian's commitment to improving the division's offerings was evident right away.
