11 Data Points and Discoveries That Surprised Us in 2024One of our most important jobs at The Upshot is to give readers a kind of journalism that wouldn’t otherwise exist at The New York Times — in conception, execution or both. Early this year, researchers shared with us the first school-district-level data comparing students’ test scores before and after pandemic school closures. We expected that students in poor districts would remain further behind students in rich districts, and that was generally true. Some of our research confirmed patterns that have been observed before: On average, voters appeared to select new neighborhoods based, at least indirectly, on those neighborhoods’ partisanship. But our extraordinarily detailed data also let us dig into the dynamics of the years between the 2020 and 2024 elections.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned congressional leaders Friday that the federal government will hit its debt limit as early as Jan. 14 unless Congress takes action or her department implements “extraordinary measures” to avoid default. “Treasury currently expects to reach the new limit between January 14 and January 23, at which time it will be necessary for Treasury to start taking extraordinary measures,” Yellen wrote in her letter, addressed to House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. The federal government can often operate for months under the “extraordinary measures” or accounting maneuvers Yellen referenced in her letter. The federal debt stands at roughly $36 trillion. Ultimately, 170 Republicans defied him and added the debt ceiling fight to the incoming administration’s growing to-do list.

The federal government can often operate for months under the "extraordinary measures" or accounting maneuvers Yellen referenced in her letter. As the government faced an ultimately averted shutdown last week, one of the issues Congress debated was increasing or even eliminating the debt ceiling. Osamu Suzuki speaks at a news conference in Tokyo, Japan, on Monday, May 10, 2010. Osamu Suzuki, an ingenious pennypincher who led Japan's Suzuki Motor for more than four decades and played a key role in turning India into a flourishing auto market, has died aged 94. Born Osamu Matsuda, Suzuki took his wife's family name through adoption in a practice common among Japanese families lacking a male heir. The former banker joined the company founded by her grandfather in 1958 and worked upwards through the ranks to become president two decades later. In the 1970s, he saved the company from the brink of collapse by convincing Toyota Motor to supply engines that met new emissions regulations, but which Suzuki Motor had yet to develop.

Many Americans are capping off the holidays with new debt balances. This season, 36% of American consumers took on holiday debt, according to a new survey from LendingTree. Those who racked up balances this season took on an average of $1,181 in debt, up from $1,028 in 2023. Higher prices caused by inflation remain an issue for many individuals and families this holiday season, he said. Consumers who went into debt over the holidays run the risk of still carrying those balances when next year’s holiday season comes around.

But leaders from the Uncommitted National Movement and the “abandon Harris” campaign say they felt Harris didn’t do enough to distance herself from Biden or outline how she’d handle the war differently. About a month before the election, Harris met with Muslim and Arab American community leaders in Flint, Michigan ahead of a rally there. Bryarr Misner, who grew up Christian, converted to Judaism, and later to Islam, worked as a campaign manager for the Abandon Harris campaign in Pittsburgh. The former Harris campaign official said groups like the Abandon Harris movement demanded that Harris call for an immediate arms embargo and her campaign wasn’t willing to do so. Spain has some of the oldest moms, with 11% of women having kids post-40, compared to 4% in the US. AdvertisementWhile pregnancies after 35 are considered "advanced maternal age," Cruz-Lemini's experience is far from unusual in Spain, where more than 10% of all births involve mothers 40 or older. Spain also ranked second for the share of births to women aged 40 or older; 11% of live births in the country were to mothers in their fifth decade or beyond. García-Velasco said this may be why it may feel less risky for some women in Spain to leave trying for kids until later in life. In Spain, García-Velasco said that many single mothers pursuing fertility treatment cite a "lack of adequate partner" as their primary motivation for going solo.
