As a Republican governor who has won four elections in a purple state, I’ve learned a thing or two about how to win. Catchy one-liners — calling Vice President Harris a “bum,” “not a serious person” and “bottom of the barrel” — might rile up the base, but they do little to connect with independent voters needed to close the deal in November. Independent voters are independent for a reason. They are not driven to the polls by personal attacks. The message from both sides must be inspirational, focused and about the results that can be delivered for the American people.

More than 100 venture capitalists said on Wednesday that they had pledged to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in November and had solicited donations for her presidential campaign, in a rejoinder to the splintering among tech leaders over whom to support in the election. The group includes Reid Hoffman, a founder of LinkedIn; Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures; Mark Cuban, the former principal owner of the Dallas Mavericks; Ron Conway, a well-known angel investor; and the billionaire Chris Sacca. “We are pro-business, pro-American dream, pro-entrepreneurship and pro-technological progress,” the group said in a statement posted to their website, VCsForKamala.org. “We also believe in democracy as the backbone of our nation.” The website asks people to sign a pledge to support Ms. Harris and another to donate to her campaign. The effort was buttressed by another group of tech entrepreneurs and workers called Tech For Kamala, which also wrote a letter this week expressing “enthusiastic and unwavering support for Vice President Harris.” The letter gathered more than 550 signatures in two days.

Anita Dunn, President Biden’s senior adviser, is leaving her White House post next week to move over to a super PAC supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’s fledgling campaign, the first major personnel move in the West Wing since the president dropped his bid for re-election. Ms. Dunn, who coordinated communications strategy for Mr. Biden and has been one of his closest aides, will consult for Future Forward, the largest Democratic-leaning super PAC, which last week announced a $50 million advertising campaign to promote Ms. Harris in six critical battleground states. “It’s been an honor and privilege to serve in this White House, with this president and this team, during this transformational term,” Ms. Dunn said in a statement. “I am grateful to President Biden and Vice President Harris for their leadership and giving me the opportunity to be part of what they have accomplished for the American people.”In a brief telephone call, Ms. Dunn said she would be leaving the White House next Tuesday and not returning to her own consulting firm but would take on Future Forward as an independent consultant. Ms. Dunn has been part of Mr. Biden’s orbit for years and was credited with helping to turn around his campaign for the Democratic nomination in 2020 after early defeats and stabilizing his White House communications strategy.

The next test of Harris’ appeal will take place Tuesday in Georgia, where her campaign is hosting an Atlanta rally. “The groundswell of support around the vice president is real and it is meaningful,” Dan Kanninen, Harris’ battleground state director, told reporters Monday. “Tomorrow, Vice President Harris’ visit will highlight her brighter vision for the future, where our freedoms are protected and every American has a fair shot. Both of these lawmakers have two things in common: they are among those being considered to be Vice President Harris' running mate and can help raise a boatload of money for her heading into November. Trump is raising big moneyDespite Harris' momentum, Trump is still raising a lot of money. The Harris campaign figures cannot be independently verified either, until Aug. 20, when her campaign disclose its financials. "Vice President Harris has directed her team to begin the process of vetting potential running mates," the Harris campaign said in response to a request for comment. Shapiro is one of the more moderate contenders to be Harris' running mate.

When she ran for president the first time, Kamala Harris darted to the left as she fought for attention from the Democratic Party’s liberal wing. After she dropped out, social and racial justice protests swept across the country in the summer of 2020, and Ms. Harris joined other Democrats in supporting progressive ideas during what appeared to be a national realignment on criminal justice. One presidential cycle later, with Vice President Harris less than a week into another race for the White House, video clips of her old statements and interviews are being weaponized as Republicans aim to define her as a left-wing radical who is out of step with swing voters. Former President Donald J. Trump is calling out her past positions and statements at his rallies, and on Monday his campaign began reserving time for television advertisements that are likely to resurface videos of Ms. Harris.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said Monday that while he "probably" will debate Vice President Kamala Harris, he "could also make a case" for avoiding a face-to-face confrontation with his likely Democratic opponent. Before that debate, Trump had repeatedly challenged Biden to face him "anytime, anywhere, anyplace." But when asked about debating Harris, he struck a different tone. "We'll see if Trump shows," Harris campaign spokesman Michael Tyler said in a statement. While Trump told reporters last week he would be willing to debate Harris "multiple times," he also said that he was "not thrilled about ABC."

When President Biden introduced Kamala Harris as his running mate four years ago, he shared their origin story: He had first learned of her, he said, through his son Beau, who served with her as a state attorney general. “I know how much Beau respected Kamala and her work,” Mr. Biden said of his son, who died in 2015 and was Delaware’s attorney general when Ms. Harris held the same job in California. “That mattered a lot to me, to be honest with you, as I made this decision.”Now it is Vice President Harris who is deciding on a running mate. Of the five or six vice-presidential options currently seen as the most serious contenders, two of them — Governors Roy Cooper of North Carolina and Andy Beshear of Kentucky — directly overlapped with Ms. Harris as attorneys general. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania came into the job as she was leaving her post, and as Mr. Trump entered the White House.

Elon Musk, the owner of X, retweeted a parody Kamala Harris campaign ad Friday without labeling it as misleading, an apparent violation of his own platform's rules. Portions of video footage in the altered content — such as Harris speaking to crowds, and general videos of her supporters — were used in a recent Harris' campaign video on YouTube. In the original video, Harris narrates, telling viewers, "In this election, we each face a question: what kind of country do we want to live in?" The altered video reposted by Musk does not include Beyonce. This is not the first time altered voice content has appeared during this presidential campaign.

CNN —Confronted with a barrage of negative social media posts from former President Donald Trump aimed at his wife, second gentleman Doug Emhoff eschewed machismo or defensiveness. “That’s all he got?” he said Tuesday of the attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, the new and historic presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. And Monday, he leaned into a cheerleader role as he introduced the vice president at her Wilmington, Delaware, campaign headquarters. So I think that gives you a fairly good indication of if he now would move into a precedent-setting first gentleman role,” McBride said. “This first gentleman role is being a supportive spouse and understanding better than anyone the administration’s goals and how to go about best achieving that,” she said.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris’ office on Friday is rejecting a suggestion from a senior Israeli official that the vice president’s remarks on Thursday that forcefully criticized Israel’s conduct in its war against Hamas could have made a ceasefire deal harder to reach. After all the political tumult of the last month, Thursday’s latest New York Times/Siena College poll is full of findings unlike any we’ve seen this cycle, with one exception: who leads the presidential race. The poll found Donald J. Trump ahead of Kamala Harris by one percentage point, 48 percent to 47 percent, among likely voters. Other than the name of the Democratic candidate, “Trump +1” is a result that could have been from any other Times/Siena poll before President Biden’s disastrous debate. But on question after question, there are major shifts from previous Times-Siena polls, which were all taken before Vice President Harris essentially locked up her party’s nomination for president, before the Republican convention, and before the attempted assassination of Mr. Trump. Even the one-point Harris deficit represents a significant improvement for Democrats from Mr. Biden’s six-point deficit in our last Times/Siena poll.

While Trump insists he's sticking with Vance, the senator's poor polling combined with Vice President Kamala Harris' momentum has led some to ask: Could Trump replace Vance? The Democratic and Republican National Committees have separate rules governing how they fill vacancies of presidential or vice presidential nominees. Related stories"I think sometimes what people forget is that people start voting in September," Dacey told Business Insider. It would be, he said, "extraordinarily disruptive" both logistically and politically to replace Vance as the vice presidential nominee. In 2020, there were rumors he would replace former Vice President Mike Pence on his ticket.

Harris is also facing a barrage of sexist attacksThe GOP is baselessly accusing Harris of sleeping her way to the top. Although Hillary Clinton also bore the brunt of sexist attacks as a female presidential candidate in 2016, the experts told BI that Harris is going to have it much worse.
