A U.S. judge on Tuesday temporarily blocked the Port of Oakland from using “San Francisco” in the Oakland airport’s name, finding the name change would likely cause consumer confusion and harm the city of San Francisco. U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Hixson said in the decision that changing the name of Metropolitan Oakland International Airport in nearby Oakland to “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport” would likely mislead consumers into thinking it is connected with San Francisco. San Francisco sued Oakland for infringing its airport’s trademarks in April, arguing the Oakland airport’s similar new name would confuse travelers. Oakland’s airport is 12 miles east of San Francisco and just over 30 miles from San Francisco International Airport, whose airport code is SFO. San Francisco International served 47 million passengers in fiscal year 2023 while Oakland’s airport served more than 11 million, according to city reports.

CNN —The name “San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport” is off-limits to Oakland’s airport — at least for now. On Tuesday, US Magistrate Judge Thomas S. Hixson blocked the Port of Oakland from using the name it recently adopted for the Bay Area airport that was formerly called Metropolitan Oakland International Airport. The judge granted the City of San Francisco’s motion for a preliminary injunction with respect to the Port of Oakland while the legal battle plays out. The City of San Francisco filed a lawsuit on April 18 following the approval by Oakland’s Board of Port Commissioners to change the airport’s name. CNN’s Taylor Romine and Chimaine Pouteau contributed to this report.

China, perhaps more than most countries, will be bracing for fractious relations ahead with the United States. “It makes sense for Chinese officials to use these big events to try and shape some of the international narratives right now,” said Li Mingjiang, an associate professor of international relations at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University. “Since there’s not much time before January 2025.”Cargo containers and cranes at Yantian port in southern China's Shenzhen earlier this year. CNN —Two wounded patients were killed after police officers and vigilantes attacked an ambulance in Haiti, humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders said on Wednesday. The officers and vigilantes then took the three wounded patients outside the hospital grounds and at least two of them were killed, MSF said. The third patient was not killed, Garnier said. Three U.S. airlines have suspended flights to Haiti after a Spirit Airlines jet was struck by gunfire. Some see Rubio as one of the “less MAGA” options but is still someone “Trump’s base could trust,” a Trump ally said. Trump’s first Cabinet pick was Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, to serve as ambassador to the United Nations. Hours later Trump announced his second Cabinet selection, former Rep. Lee Zeldin, to oversee the Environmental Protection Agency. The State Department is advising against travel to Haiti in the midst of violent political turmoil.

After 25+ cruises, I say the best cadence of busy port days to relaxing sea days is a ratio of 2:1. Ultimately, I think adding one or two sea days to the itinerary would've improved the experience and given me space to relax. AdvertisementPlus, multiple sea days in a row can provide beginner or first-time cruisers insight into whether they like them. This can be useful to anyone contemplating trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific crossings that can have seven or more sea days in a row. For me, after going on more than 25 cruises — including a 105-day sailing — I've found the best cadence of busy port days to relaxing sea days is a ratio of 2:1.

Canadian Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon has invoked federal powers to end work stoppages at the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Montreal, ordering binding and final arbitration between labor unions and ports ownership. Strike actions by unions and ports ownership lockouts had hit both coasts of the key U.S. northern trade partner. "The lockouts of the Canadian ports were causing ships to divert and contributing to congestion and delays throughout North America. Under section 107 of the Canada Labor Code, the Labor Minister can order binding arbitration to end labor disputes. Existing collective agreements will remain in place pending a new deal being reached between dockworker unions and the ports.

watch nowAfter two years of record drought conditions amid a challenging El Nino weather system which decimated vessel transits, the Panama Canal is experiencing a trade rebound. The U.S. is the largest user of the Panama Canal, with total U.S. commodity export and import containers representing about 73% of Panama Canal traffic, and 40% of all U.S. container traffic traveling through the Panama Canal every year. Despite competition from the Suez Canal, Vásquez predicts that the Panama Canal will recover to pre-drought volumes, with a focus on larger vessels and energy-related trade. The Panama Canal drought began in late 2022 and was described as the worst in the canal's history by January 2024. The Panama Canal Authority reported a 29% drop in vessel transits during fiscal year 2024.

Mobile offshore drilling units stand in the Port of Cromarty Firth in Cromarty, U.K., on Tuesday, June 23, 2020. Oil prices fell slightly on Friday as the risk that a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico will affect U.S. oil and gas output declined while the market continues to weigh how President-elect Donald Trump's policies might affect supplies. Brent crude oil futures fell 26 cents, or 0.3%, to $75.37 per barrel by 0209 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 35 cents or 0.5% to $72.01. CNN —Ancient DNA has revealed surprises about the identities of some people who perished in the ancient Roman town of Pompeii after a volcanic eruption, overturning misconceptions about their genetic relationships, ancestry and sex. Ash and volcanic rock called pumice then covered Pompeii and its residents, preserving scenes of the victims of the city’s destruction like an eerie time capsule. While the Greeks, Etruscans and Samnites attempted to conquer it, Pompeii became a Roman colony, the study authors noted. In 2015, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii began efforts to restore 86 of the 104 casts originally made by Fiorelli. Together, park scientists and the study authors are working on a larger project to better understand the genetic diversity present in Pompeii during the Roman Empire.

The former president's litany of campaign pledges include steep tariffs, tax cuts, deregulation and a push to withdraw from key global agreements. Trump's favorite wordTrump has previously described "tariff" as his favorite word, calling it "the most beautiful word in the dictionary." And we don't see Trump's secondary tariff pledge — that baseline tariff, which would hurt European companies — as being all that feasible," Galbraith said.
