The Biden administration said on Tuesday that it would award up to $450 million in grants to a South Korean chipmaker, SK Hynix, to help build its new chip facility in Indiana, in what officials described as a milestone in rebuilding the U.S. semiconductor manufacturing industry. With the announcement, the United States now has commitments from all five of the world’s leading-edge semiconductor manufacturers to construct chip plants in the United States with financial assistance from the administration, Commerce Secretary Gina M. Raimondo said in a call with reporters on Monday. The Biden administration previously announced that it had reached agreements with Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Samsung and Micron to help fund investments in the United States. “These are the only companies in the world capable of producing leading-edge chips at scale,” she said. SK Hynix announced in April that it had committed to investing $3.87 billion in a facility in West Lafayette, Ind.

NASA and Indian spacecraft have spotted what they believe to be water on the moon’s surface, and Chinese scientists last year found water trapped in glass beads strewn across the moon. But people didn’t always know there was water on the moon, though scientists theorized about its existence for hundreds of years. “I think it has lots of potential, this new finding that we can extract molecular water directly from lunar soils,” Qian said. After the latest study, many Weibo users raised the possibility of growing plants or crops on the moon using the molecular water found in soil. “We can’t work behind closed doors – it would be best to attract all of their scientists to China,” one wrote.

Cancer is typically associated with older people, but the percentage of colorectal cancer cases in those under 55 doubled between 1995 and 2019, from 11% to 20%, according to the American Cancer Society. However, it's understood that lifestyle factors such as being overweight, being physically inactive, drinking alcohol, and eating lots of red meat and ultra-processed foods increase colon cancer risk, Meredy Birdi, a cancer dietitian based in London, told Business Insider. There's good evidence that eating fiber lowers colorectal cancer risk, she said. She shared three high-fiber lunch recipes that could help prevent colorectal cancer with BI. Exuberant looters made off with furniture, bedding and potted plants as they swarmed the Bangladesh residence of the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, after she resigned her office and fled the country, according to local broadcast footage. People scaled the residence’s black gates, the videos showed, throwing items against walls inside, bashing portraits and helping themselves to a spread of food in catering dishes. The footage showed many people with hands and fists raised in celebration and some jumping for joy on the street. Many in the crowd appeared to be filming the event on their own cellphones. Social media posts and live television footage also showed people taking animals from the residence, including chickens, ducks and rabbits, and some people posing with the animals.

I am just prematurely predicting other investors fleeing the stock because they think Warren knows more than them. Many investors thought that Amazon was the best set up of the Mag Seven going into earnings. We are right smack in a most perilous moment because the Fed doesn't want to move too fast but the stock market does and the Fed does not care about that. The Palisades Nuclear Generating Station in Covert, Mich. John Madill | The Herald-Palladium | APThe Palisades Power Plant on the shores of Lake Michigan had become a piece of history, a relic of an era when nuclear energy was viewed as the future. The new technology, which could become the first of its kind on the U.S. grid, promises to speed deployment of nuclear plants in the future. The U.S. and a coalition of more than 20 other countries pledged in December to triple nuclear energy by 2050. But building new nuclear plants is slow and expensive. SMRs are viewed as an important path to expand nuclear power because they promise to reduce capital costs, a major hurdle to building new plants.

Neom's flagship city, known as The Line, has grand plans to be a futuristic "eco-city." Experts told BI that these plans offered exciting solutions for issues like urban sprawl, excessive carbon emissions, and inefficient energy use. AdvertisementLovgreen pointed to issues "such as disrupting natural habitats, carbon emissions from building materials, and the transferring of these materials to areas remote from where they are produced." "Transportation accounts for less than a quarter of global carbon emissions, while the construction and operation of buildings represent nearly 40% of emissions," Baum said. She added that it can be particularly difficult to maintain sustainable construction in hot and dry regions of the world.

What’s Uniting, and Dividing, Native Voters in ArizonaNative American voters were key to helping Democrats clinch Arizona in 2020. But in this election, many Native voters say they feel exhausted, disappointed and torn about how to vote. But overall it was frustration and anxiety that we heard as we talked with more than four dozen voters around Phoenix and on the Navajo Nation, the country’s largest reservation, about their concerns. Many voters felt like they had been left out of the state’s growing economy, with unemployment for Native Americans almost double the national average. Most of the voters we spoke to said no, but some were willing to give him another shot.

Prickles have been around for at least 400 million years, dating back to when ferns and their relatives emerged with some bearing prickles on their stems. Lonely Guy genesBy removing prickles from various species, including roses and eggplants, the authors found that a LOG gene was responsible for the prickles in about 20 types of plants studied. LOG-related genes are found in all plants, even dating back to mosses, which are regarded as the first dry-land plant, Lippman said. “(LOG genes) have been repeatedly co-opted (a biological shift in a trait’s function) in different plant species for the formation of prickles, and also repeatedly lost in lineages where prickles are lost. For agricultural purposes, removing prickles could make harvesting easier and pave the way to get lesser-known produce into grocery stores.

Goldman Sachs added four new stocks to its conviction list going into August for equity investors looking to capitalize on the bull market. Dollar General , Philip Morris International , S & P Global and Woodward were the newest addition to the Wall Street firm's coveted stock list. For Dollar General, Goldman analysts believe the worries around low income consumer discretionary spend and competition are overdone. Meanwhile, Goldman said the market is underappreciating the growth opportunity for Philip Morris as the company innovates around its smoke-free alternatives to cigarettes. Both S & P Global and Woodward have recorded solid gains so far this year, rising 11% and nearly 17%, respectively.

In July, plant scientists at the International Botanical Congress in Madrid changed a scientific name shared by about 200 different plant species. For centuries, the word “caffra” was used in the scientific names of many plants to denote that they grew in Africa. Botanists in the region have objected to using the term to refer to African plants. In South Africa, use of the word can result in a fine or even a prison sentence. “We owe it to ourselves to make amends that recognize the wrongs our previous generations did,” said Nigel Barker, a botanist at the University of Pretoria who was raised in South Africa during apartheid.

For the first time, wind and solar generated more of the European Union's electricity than fossil fuels during the first half of the year. Wind and solar accounted for an all-time high of 30% of the region's energy needs, according to an analysis by the think tank Ember . In a separate report , Ember forecasted a global LNG supply glut by 2026 and a substantial drop in EU gas demand by 2030. But the rush to increase LNG exports from places like the US ignores the reality of rapidly declining gas demand in Europe, she added. Ember's report said that while it's unclear how swiftly fossil-fuel use will drop across Europe, a pipeline of solar and wind projects suggests this tipping point could be permanent.

They’re part of a whimsical trend among people who frequently vacation on the seas. The cruising duck enthusiasts, who at times refer to themselves as “quackers,” have been packing rubber ducks onto ships by the dozens, sometimes hundreds, to hide and leave for other passengers to find. The fad is believed to have begun in 2018, when a 10-year-old girl hid toy ducks for fellow cruisers to find during a family vacation. Her parents created what is considered the original “Cruising Ducks” Facebook page, which has ballooned into a large online community. The Facebook page has attracted nearly 275,000 quackers and has close to 100 posts a day about hiding, finding, decorating and just loving the ducks.

Air New Zealand is waiting for eight Boeing 787 Dreamliners and five Airbus A320neo and A3201neo planes, according to its website. SAF has a lower carbon footprint than traditional jet fuel because it’s made from waste products, where the carbon has already been emitted; or from plants that absorb CO2 as they grow. That was much higher than the 5% reduction target in international aviation emissions by 2030 agreed by 193 countries at a United Nations-backed conference last November. The aviation industry accounted for 2% of global energy-related carbon emissions in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). “Planned production capacity for sustainable aviation fuels will provide just a small fraction of jet fuel demand by 2027,” notes the IEA on its website.
