For years, Lopzang Dadul herded his yaks, sheep and goats across the vast, vertiginous landscape near India’s contested border with China, following the seasons to find grazing land. All these areas are winter grazing areas of Chushul village. He says 60 of the 113 households in his village used to be nomadic; now only 10 are maintaining the tradition due to those factors and lost grazing lands. New Delhi says two sites remain contested along the Ladakh border after disengagement at other contested zones following the 2020 clash. Reduced patrolling led to an ultimate loss of control over such areas, where China grabs land “inch-by-inch,” the report said.

Although the heaviest snow has ended, several more inches of snow are expected across large swaths of Maine and New Hampshire, according to the National Weather Service. “Low pressure in the Gulf of Maine will continue to bring accumulating snow through this evening along with gusty northeast winds,” the National Weather Service said. “Winds will also remain gusty and may result in additional downed branches and limbs due to the weight of freshly fallen snow,” the weather service added. Winter storm warnings and advisories have been extended for parts of New England through Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service. “Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service notes.

Although both Blevins and Patterson are Republicans, the race is nonpartisan and open to all registered voters in the ward. The recall effort in Oklahoma was launched by two longtime Enid residents, best friends Connie Vickers and Nancy Presnall, both Democrats in a county where Republicans have a nearly 4-to-1 advantage in voter registration. The two helped spearhead a signature drive to qualify Blevins’ recall for the ballot, getting 350 signatures from voters in the ward, far more than the 240 they needed. "The people who support that ideology are very passionate and very dedicated, and up until this point we haven't been. “We determined that we have a good group together that wants to do good things for the community,” Presnall said.

The climate crisis ends up touching on all of those issues, as CNN’s chief climate correspondent Bill Weir told me. Removing politics from climate changeWOLF: It’s interesting to hear you say that about Texas, because the governor and the Republican-dominated legislature there would seemingly be opposed to doing anything specifically because of climate change. Joe Biden has tried to make the argument that addressing climate change should be an economic boom. It seems clear that we’re going to burst through the 2-degree tipping point that had been previously suggested as the tipping point for climate change. What that means for marine ecosystems and coral reefs, which are the cradles of life in the oceans, and what it means for the power of storms as we head into hurricane season has scientists really, really worried.

But a new nationwide study that analyzed data from 300 million home sales and 60,000 wind turbines finds turbines’ impact on home values is much lower than previously thought – about a 1% drop on average for a home with at least one wind turbine within six miles. Even for homes close to a turbine, the study finds the negative impact to property value “diminishes and eventually disappears” within a decade. Getting the answer required building a massive mapping database of the distance between US homes and wind turbines, accounting for changes in topography and other factors. The study also explored just how big wind turbines appear to the human eye. Much of the growth in wind turbines in the US has been on farmland in the Midwest, Great Plains states and Texas.

Thanks to cutting-edge wearables and advances in the booming fitness tech industry, it's easier than ever to keep tabs on your heart health in real time. While it can be motivating to measure your health progress with metrics like resting heart rate, the real test is low-tech, Paz said. "For the vast majority of people, you don't need any of this stuff. Once you understand your current fitness level and heart health, you can set yourself small, achievable goals, then try the test again and see exactly how much you've improved. You don't need to run a marathon tomorrow," he said.

"Your resting heart rate tells you so much about your cardiovascular fitness," he told Business Insider. AdvertisementAnywhere from 60 to 100 beats per minute is typically considered a normal resting heart rate, according to Paz. Athletes, especially in endurance sports, can have a resting heart rate as low as 40 beats per minute. How can you improve your resting heart rate? "As you train, your resting heart rate is going to go down," Paz said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — When a total solar eclipse transforms day into night, will tortoises start acting romantic? They previously detected other strange animal behaviors in 2017 at a South Carolina zoo that was in the path of total darkness. This year’s full solar eclipse in North America crisscrosses a different route than in 2017 and occurs in a different season, giving researchers and citizen scientists opportunities to observe new habits. After the 2017 eclipse, he analyzed data from tracking devices previously placed on wild species to study habitat use. So do feral horses, “probably taking cover, responding to the possibility of a storm out on the open plains.”The last full U.S. solar eclipse to span coast to coast happened in late summer, in August.

In fact, about 1 in 5 workers have borrowed or withdrawn money from retirement accounts, according to a recent survey from SoFi. How 401(k) loans workThe specifics of a 401(k) loan will vary from employer to employer, but here's how they generally work. Like most loans, you'll be charged a rate of interest. This fire adds to an ever-lengthening list of rapidly spreading, destructive wildfires in the US and elsewhere. To understand why the Texas fires have been so fierce you have to look to last spring, said Luke Kanclerz, a fire analyst at Texas A&M Forest Service. It only took a short period of warm, dry weather for them to dry out further, providing a carpet for the fire to spread. Yuki Iwamura/AFP/Getty ImagesScientists are still working to understand what impact, if any, global warming is having on the winds that whip up wildfires. Research has found climate change is fueling the rapid intensification of hurricanes, pushing storms to explode at a deadly pace.

Having a higher VO2 max is good, but more important for health is how the number changes over time. There's a way to use VO2 max to improve heart health and fitness without getting too bogged down in the data. So you have a higher VO2 max, you have a better endurance capacity," Blander said. Men tend to have a slightly higher VO2 max, so an example for an active man could be around 42 mL/kg/min. "If you have higher VO2 max you have a much better chance based on our data analysis to live better, longer, which is amazing," Blander said.

The snowstorm has passed, but the fire — one among several major blazes active in Texas — keeps burning. As of Friday, the Smokehouse Creek Fire had affected more than a million acres, making it the largest wildfire in Texas history, and one of the biggest in the history of the country. Texans know that fires aren’t uncommon in the Panhandle this time of year, and neither is snow. But huge, lethal fires like Smokehouse Creek represent something different. Two weeks before the Smokehouse Fire broke out, I flew to Seattle from Cincinnati over a landscape I know well.
