CNBC's Jim Cramer asserted Wednesday that the Federal Reserve is not done tightening, even as inflation seems to be on the decline because the consumer price index is no longer so scorching hot. "Unfortunately, even with inflation cooling, the Fed has no choice but to keep tightening, if only to offset the tidal wave of inflation caused by all the government spending that's about to steamroll this economy," he said. Cramer listed three factors that might indicate the Fed hasn't finished tightening. Cramer also highlighted the tight labor market he thinks is currently making inflation difficult to manage. "We need to stop confusing any given index with the tight labor market that makes our current bout of inflation so intractable," Cramer said.

LONDON, July 11 (Reuters) - Canada's biggest pension fund, CPP Investments, has made its first bet on green hydrogen playing a growing role in cutting emissions, with a 130 million euro ($143 million) investment and the purchase of a majority stake in a three-year-old Dutch firm. "Europe is generally seen as the leading industrial market or consumer for these green molecules. Power2X's current projects include a green hydrogen and ammonia development in Portugal and a solar power and green hydrogen project in Spain. Expanding green hydrogen production will require more renewable power generation, and some questions remain over its potential use cases versus other low-emission technologies. Last month Canada's Investment Management Corporation of Ontario announced a $400 million investment in Sweden's battery producer Northvolt.

Rep. George Santos compared himself to civil rights icon Rosa Parks during a podcast appearance. Santos was referring to comments made by Sen. Mitt Romney during the SOTU address in February. In the interview, Santos took aim at what he called "sellout" Republicans, singling out Sen. Mitt Romney in particular. He continued: "Well, guess what, Rosa Parks didn't sit in the back, and neither am I going to sit in the back." Her act of resistance against racial segregation inspired the Montgomery bus boycott — a 13-month protest that played a significant role in the fight for civil rights for Black people.

Ray Walker had been receiving gender-affirming care in the state where he lives, and now can't. AP Photo/Rogelio V. SolisAt least 20 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming care for trans minors, though several are embroiled in legal challenges. Opponents of gender-affirming care say there's no solid proof of purported benefits, cite widely discredited research and say children shouldn't make life-altering decisions they might regret. Then the broad effort in conservative states to restrict gender-affirming care set its sights on Mississippi. "Most people in Mississippi cannot afford to just move to another state or even go to another state for care."

Active ETFs have attracted $100 billion of net inflows over the past 12 months, according to a report from State Street. The growth of active ETFs could help other Wall Street firms take on the industry's dominant players. Some smaller JPMorgan active equity funds that have brought in cash this year include JPMorgan Active Value ETF (JAVA) and the JPMorgan Active Growth ETF (JGRO) . Two-thirds of U.S.-centric active funds fell short of their relevant indexes in the first half, according to a report from Morningstar. Active funds did fare better than passive funds in many categories, like small cap growth — perhaps a more fair comparison, given that passive funds do include fees and trading costs — but underperformed significantly in the popular large-cap blend category, according to data from Morningstar Direct.

The state's felon disenfranchisement policy has been shown to have a disproportionate impact on Black Mississippians, nearly 29,000 of whom were disenfranchised between 1994 and 2017, according to court filings. Black Mississippians account for 36% of the state's voting age population but 59% of those who have been disfranchised for life due to a felony conviction. The 1890 version had removed crimes thought to be "white crimes" and added those thought to be "Black crimes," with the aim of discriminating against Black voters, according to court records. Eight crimes listed in the 1890 version of the provision - bribery, theft, arson, obtaining money or goods under false pretense, perjury, forgery, embezzlement and bigamy - remain as disqualifying offenses today. A key question in the case was whether the process of amending Mississippi's felon disenfranchisement provision purged the discriminatory intent behind the 1890 version and brought the law into compliance constitutional race-based voter protections.

June 20 (Reuters) - A lawyer who argued on the losing side of the U.S. Supreme Court case that ended the national right to abortion won confirmation on Tuesday to a seat on a federal appeals court. The U.S. Senate confirmed Julie Rikelman, a top lawyer for the Center for Reproductive Rights, to the Boston-based 1st Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals by a vote of 51-43. Rikelman represented Mississippi's last remaining abortion clinic in urging the Supreme Court to reaffirm the constitutional right to abortion and strike down a state law that banned the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Rikelman's nomination drew opposition from Republicans, who questioned her abortion rights advocacy during a September 2022 Senate hearing and described her position on the issue as extreme. She is Biden’s third nominee to secure a seat on the court, whose active judges were all nominated by Democrats.

The most expensive counties generally have fewer childcare workers or the state doesn't provide enough financial support for low-income families. The US Department of Health and Human Services considers childcare "affordable" if it costs less than 7% of a family's income. The pandemic provided a perfect example of this dynamic: 2 million women left the workforce and haven't returned, citing childcare costs as the No. Counties with higher levels of poverty often lack affordable care as childcare workers themselves can't afford to live on the industry's low wages. In Canada, where childcare workers make more, that ratio is six to one.

The first wave of first-quarter earnings will put two of the biggest holdings of a red-hot ETF under the microscope. The JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) , which uses stock selection to find value plays and equity-linked notes to generate additional yield, has a 12-month rolling dividend yield of more than 11% and a 30-day SEC yield of 9.59%. Moreover, the Mayfield, Ohio-based Progressive only accounts for 0.25% in the SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) , but has a 1.6% weighting in JEPI.

ABPI's statement linked to a website of a self-regulatory body run by the association that pointed to a complaint alleging that Novo Nordisk had sponsored courses on weight management on LinkedIn for health professionals, without making clear the company's involvement. The move amounted to "bribing health professionals with an inducement to prescribe," the complaint alleged. In response, Novo said that it had agreed to provide sponsorship to ensure that health professionals would receive training from a reputable provider, but that it had supported the activity at "arms length". Novo is the market leader in the rapidly growing area of weight loss through medicinal treatment rather than only dieting or exercising. Novo has since developed a more effective obesity treatment called Wegovy, which has been in great demand globally and is being lined up for its UK launch.
