PHILADELPHIA—Aaron Nola made his debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015 with the hope that he was the successor to Cole Hamels as the team’s next pitching ace. But his performance over nine seasons in the major leagues was often maddeningly inconsistent—when what the Phillies needed more than anything was an anchor of stability. This October, Nola, 30, is finally giving Phillies fans a glimpse at the guy they were hoping for all along. He has allowed just two runs over 18⅔ innings in three playoff starts this year, including a six-inning shutout against the Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series on Tuesday that gave the Phillies a 2-0 series lead.

Now the Diamondbacks turn to the rookie right-hander for Game 3 of the NL Championship Series in an effort to slow the homer-happy Philadelphia Phillies, who have built a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven playoff thanks to six homers. “Yesterday was a really frustrating outcome,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday, a day after Philadelphia's 10-0 rout at Citizens Bank Park. We knew they were a hot team,” Lovullo said. “They’re built to slug.”The good news for the D-backs is Pfaadt is coming off one of his best outings this year. “Grinding out at-bats, having mature at-bats, driving up pitch counts, catching popups, picking up the baseball," Lovullo said.

The youthful playoff infusion is the continuation of one of the best regular seasons for rookie hitters in MLB history. Five rookies — Carter, Carroll, Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson and Minnesota’s Royce Lewis and Edouard Julien — had OPS totals over 1.000, and Jung wasn’t far behind at .947. “I’d say adrenaline-wise, it’s probably felt about the same as the regular season, maybe a tiny bit more,” Carroll said. It's probably no coincidence that the Rangers started to struggle around the time he got hurt — the third baseman hit 23 homers during the regular season. Texas had a 73-49 record in games he played during the regular season and a 17-23 mark when he didn't.

MIAMI (AP) — Kim Ng is leaving the Miami Marlins after three seasons as general manager, Marlins chairman and principal owner Bruce Sherman announced Monday. The Marlins exercised their team option for her to return for the 2024 season, Sherman said in a statement, but Ng declined her mutual option. I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Marlins family and its fans for my time in South Florida. The last full season in which the Marlins made the playoffs was in 2003, when they won the World Series. “We thank Kim for her contributions during her time with our organization and wish her and her family well,” Sherman said.

The Philadelphia Phillies slugger said it would be a dream to play for Team USA when baseball returns for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. He would be 10 years into the contract and 35 years old, should he get the chance to play for Team USA in LA. The WBC is operated by MLB and takes place during spring training, meaning players do not need to miss regular season games to participate. Cricket, flag football, softball, lacrosse and squash also were confirmed Monday by the International Olympic Committee to be held at the Los Angeles Games. After winning a league-best 104 games in the regular season, the Braves find themselves on the precipice of elimination in the National League Division Series at the hands of the Phillies, in Philadelphia. The Braves must win Game 4 on Thursday night to bring the best-of-five series back to Atlanta for a winner-take-all showdown on Saturday. The hype around "Red October" in Philadelphia is back after the Phillies overcame a difficult loss in Game 2. Turns out, that was just what the Phillies needed as the series shifted home. October 11 - PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies were in control for the first 14 innings of their National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves. The final four innings of Game 2 were so calamitous for the Phillies that the series' momentum swung entirely to Atlanta. "As I've said many times, this is a tough team, resilient team," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Tuesday. "I mean, he's as good as there is in the game," Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Riley. That includes a 2-0 mark against the Braves in last year's NLDS en route to a World Series berth.

But if you are a believer in momentum heading into Game 3 Wednesday, then the Braves just might be the team to beat. The Phillies said all the right things in the clubhouse after Game 2. Thomson and Game 3 starter Aaron Nola said vibes were good in Philly, especially with a needed day off to regroup. Nola gave up five hits, walked two and struck out six in six-plus innings against the Braves in a Game 3 NLDS win last season. So we just got to take it game by game.

And while the Marlins’ postseason was short lived — ending Wednesday night after a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies — it marked a major milestone for Ng.
