Schmitt's example may be extreme, but mold damage is not unusual. In 2022, water damage, including mold, represented 27.6% of homeowners insurance losses, according to data from Insurance Services Office, an industry group. Despite the award for the owner of the mold-damaged home later being reduced to $4 million, companies still pulled back on mold coverage. "Mold claims won't be covered if it's a result of neglect, such as pipe leaking for months resulting in water damage and mold." "You should always read your insurance policy and understand what you have, but no one's going to do that," Kochenburger said.

So I've got a not-so modest proposal: Time for Apple to jump in with both feet, and buy HBO — along with the rest of Warner Bros. I know, I know: "Apple should buy X, Y or Z" is a long-running piece of techworld fanfic. But now I think Apple should spend real money and buy WBD. And then, boom: Apple's services business — the part of the company Apple needs to keep growing while its hardware business slows — instantly grows by nearly 50%. Homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flood damage, however. Most people who have flood insurance get it through the federal government, via FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program, experts said. On average, about 30% of U.S. homes in the highest-risk areas for flooding have flood insurance, according to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Risk Center. Private insurers also offer flood policies and may offer higher coverage than FEMA's policies, according to the Insurance Information Institute. What basement items are covered by flood insurance?

Discovery just told investors its TV networks were worth $9 billion less than the company thought. Now it's Paramount's turn: It's taking a $6 billion charge on its TV business. Discovery told investors its TV business was in free fall, and that it would take a $9 billion write-down on those assets. On Thursday, it was Paramount's turn: The entertainment conglomerate, which is about to be acquired by David Ellison and a consortium of investors, just took a $6 billion charge on its TV business. Elon Musk is "the one person who is accountable to no one" and his impact on public discourse should not be underestimated, the U.K.'s technology minister said in an interview with the Times newspaper, adding to recent criticisms of the technology billionaire from senior government officials. Peter Kyle, secretary of science, innovation and technology, said in the interview, which was published Wednesday, that Musk has the power to influence major world affairs — even the war between Russia and Ukraine. Kyle added that the relationship Britain has with companies such as X and other major social media firms, "is much more akin to the negotiations with fellow secretaries of state in other countries, simply because of the scale and scope that they have." His comments, which were made before the recent riots in the U.K., follow Sunday's controversial remarks from Musk about British affairs. On Monday, the British prime minister's official spokesperson said there was "no justification" for comments like those made by X's owner and chairman.

London CNN —Social media has played a big role in fueling the anti-immigration riots engulfing towns and cities in the United Kingdom. Musk later apologized for what he called his “dumbest” ever social media post. The UK government this week vowed to prosecute “online criminality” and has pushed social media companies to take action against the spread of false information. “Social media has put rocket boosters under… not just the misinformation but the encouragement of violence,” UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said Monday. It is unclear that the UK government has the tools to hold social media platforms accountable for their role in the riots.

What would you pay for a streaming service that gave you lots — but not all — of the biggest sports programming on TV? Most crucially, it won't include lots of NFL games, since the package doesn't include CBS, which has the national rights to AFC games on Sundays. Take the NFL out of traditional TV and there's almost nothing left at this point. If you wanted a streaming service that had all of the NFL games on traditional TV, you'd need a service like YouTube TV, which currently costs $73 a month. That's partly because the TV companies that are part of the bundle kind of believe that, and partly because they have a delicate relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast.

Twitter's ad business, which fell in half after Elon Musk bought the company, continues to sputter. What a hard job Linda Yaccarino has! CNN —The Breakthrough is a project from CNN, Georgetown University, the University of Michigan, SSRS and Verasight. Each week, 1,000 Americans are asked to share what they have seen, read or heard about major presidential candidates in their own words. Results from the two surveys are combined using SSRS’s Encipher Hybrid methodology for blending probability and non-probability samples. Respondents have also been asked the same question about Biden since the start of the project. To develop topics, topic words are manually identified and augmented with words and topics identified using a combination of Noiseless Latent Dirichlet Allocation (NLDA) and Guided Topic-Noise Model (GTM).

You can read an excellent blow-by-blow of WBD's failed negotiations with the NBA from John Ourand at Puck. One is that WBD somehow wins its suit and ends up forcing the NBA to give it games it would prefer to sell somewhere else.
