REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Nov 17 (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve's top bank watchdog defended its push to overhaul capital requirements, saying they would have a minimal impact on borrowing costs and make the industry more stable. Michael Barr, the Fed's vice chair for supervision, told a conference in New York on Friday that the so-called "Basel endgame" proposal is mainly focused on raising capital requirements for activities like trading, rather than lending. "Normally, we issue a proposal and then we get very detailed commentary, and we take those comment letters into account." Banks have loudly complained about the proposal, which overhauls how banks gauge their risk and require them to set aside more capital. Industry executives said the draft rules would force them to raise costs and potentially curb lending.

But many Republican strategists believe that DeSantis’ struggles to connect with voters, and his choice to run at Trump solely from the right, have opened a lane for Haley to eclipse the Florida governor. An array of recent polls, both nationally and in the battleground states, signal that DeSantis and Haley have separated themselves from the rest of the candidates chasing Trump. “Absolutely, Nikki Haley has more upside than DeSantis if they are both viable after the first two,” argued Alex Stroman, a former executive director of the South Carolina GOP. DeSantis, Ayres argued, has “has tried to appeal to some of the ‘always Trump’ voters, but the ‘always Trump’ voters are always Trump for a reason. Nikki Haley seems to have figured out the job is to consolidate the ‘maybe Trump’ voters who supported Trump twice but now … want a different style and different temperament.”Republicans sympathetic to DeSantis argue that it is Haley who has boxed herself in.

When she died, Grandma Sue left the most common form of inheritance, called an accidental bequest, which is simply the money left over when someone dies. The New York Times reported on a coming inheritance wealth boom in 2023, 2019, 2014, 2008, and 1999. Even for families with incomes in the 51% to 90% range of earners, the average inheritance was $46,000 — hardly life-changing money. Researchers have been talking about the coming Great Wealth Transfer for at least a quarter of a century. But the reality is that all the wealth boomers are sitting on probably won't end up fixing our collective financial problems.

CNN —This year’s Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine has been awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their work on mRNA vaccines, a crucial tool in curtailing the spread of Covid-19. The Nobel Prize committee announced the prestigious honor, seen as the pinnacle of scientific achievement, in Sweden on Monday. Rickard Sandberg, a member of the Nobel Prize in medicine committee, said, “mRNA vaccines together with other Covid-19 vaccines have been administered over 13 billion times. They sold their car, Karikó told The Guardian, and stuffed the money – an equivalent of about $1,200 – in their daughter’s teddy bear for safekeeping. Weissman told CNN that their technology is much more efficient than traditional methods of producing vaccines.

Pecans were a cash crop for my grandparents, who supplemented their unreliable farm income in any way they could. Unlike peanuts, the farm’s primary crop, pecans required no planting and almost no care, and they paid out every year so long as someone picked them up before the squirrels got there first. I was astonishingly old before I learned that pumpkins are food. The first year I was in graduate school there, a vine with large, squash-like leaves popped up in my raised beds. They were small, dense, pie pumpkins, apparently planted by the neighborhood squirrels.

Predicted losses for livestock are pegged at between $30.1 million and $123.4 million, according to the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences report. Four people in Florida were killed during the hurricane, according to medical examiner reports to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. "For most of our history, profitable wasn't the first thing that came up when you asked someone about Uber," Khosrowshahi said on Uber's second-quarter conference call Aug. 1. The $1 a ride alone can add up to $4,000 to a driver's annual revenue, the company says. All of them will compete for customers on Uber's platform much as hotels search for business on Expedia.com – a business once run by Khosrowshahi. Indeed, one threat to Uber's current status as a market darling is if AV makers, especially Tesla, decide to compete with Uber directly for riders, Zino said. Khosrowshahi told Sellers that 10-20% of Uber drivers may soon be robots, but said he still thinks more people will be driving for Uber than there are today.

August rainfall, expected to be the lowest since records began in 1901, could dent yields of summer-sown crops, from rice to soybeans, boosting prices and overall food inflation, which jumped in July to the highest since January 2020. India received just 90.7 mm (3.6 inches) in the first 17 days of August, nearly 40% lower than the normal. "Normally, we experience a dry spell of five to seven days in August," said the official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity. "However, this year the dry spell has been unusually prolonged in southern India. This monsoon has been uneven, with June rains 10% below average but July rains rebounding to 13% above average.

Robust rains accelerate rice planting in India

Higher rice planting in India, the world's second-biggest producer of the grain, will ease concerns about lower output of the staple. Farmers typically start planting rice, corn, cotton, soybeans, sugarcane and peanuts, among other crops, from June 1, when monsoon rains are expected to begin drenching India. For June and July together, India's monsoon rains were 5% above average, falling 10% below normal in June but rebounding to 13% above average in July. Farmers planted 17.9 million hectares (44.2 million acres) with oilseeds, including soybeans, 2.2% more than a year earlier. Corn was planted on 7.6 million hectares (18.8 million acres), up from 7.5 million hectares a year earlier.
