THERE’S A DISTINCT palette to Fire Island Pines, the gay beach getaway a two-hour train ride from New York City. Pale sand dunes covered in sea grass and holly trees are muted against the men in neon swim briefs who wander through them. But one house stands out amid the uniformity: a modest, 1,100-square-foot white two-bedroom with a gently peaked roof, its walls filled with colorful contemporary art. The two had become close a few years earlier, after Cohen bought a painting of Langberg’s for his collection of queer-focused art, which he’d begun acquiring around 2010. “It’s not about having art on the walls,” he says, “but about them having a place and creating something here.”

Flooding, mudslides and downed trees and wires already are widely reported across Southern California. Once a hurricane, Hilary weakened as it made landfall in Mexico Sunday, where at least one person died, then it crossed over into the Golden State. While the storm has weakened significantly, it’s still battering California with extreme weather as it moves farther inland, bringing continued fears that floods and mudslides could potentially turn deadly. Read more about Hilary as it brings life-threatening flooding and gusty winds to southern western US.

CNN —Hilary has weakened to a post-tropical cyclone that’s still bringing life-threatening flooding and gusty winds to much of the Southwest US, leaving streets like raging rivers and residents ordered to leave their homes. “Areas that normally do not experience flash flooding will flood,” the National Weather Service said. Strong and gusty winds are expected to persist across portions of the western US Monday, particularly in and near areas of higher terrain. Cars were stuck in floodwaters in the Spanish Hills area, the National Weather Service reported. The Los Angeles Unified School District – the nation’s second largest school district – will be closed Monday because of the storm.

As sunshine returned to Southern California on Monday, residents and officials said the region had avoided catastrophic damage from Tropical Storm Hilary, which broke records for August rainfall as it passed into California on Sunday but was much diminished from the fearsome Category 4 hurricane that had alarmed meteorologists days earlier when it was over the Pacific Ocean. Under sheets of rain, some neighborhoods in the desert cities east of Los Angeles became a soupy mess and at one point on Monday the mayor of Palm Springs said the city was cut off by road closures. In San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, videos showed creek beds filled with sludge-colored torrents that ominously carried boulders and tree trunks. Yet in one of the most heavily populated parts of the country — Los Angeles and San Diego Counties alone have a combined population of more than 13 million — there were no reports of deaths related to the storm as of Monday afternoon.

In front of a fire station in Palm Springs, Calif., residents crowded around a pit of sand on Saturday afternoon under gray clouds, using shovels to fill bag after bag. Every 15 minutes or so, a tractor would dump more sand in the pit. “I’m exhausted,” said Greg Tormo, a real estate agent, who had just finished filling 10 sandbags and was taking a break after carrying most of them to his car. “I’m gathering the energy to take the last three.”Although Mr. Tormo was grateful for his sandbags, he was worried about how effective they would be in protecting his home from flooding. “I think everyone is trying to do the right thing to prepare, but no one really knows what the right thing is,” he said.

After months of acrimony, administration officials have recently begun visiting Beijing in a bid to reestablish regular communication. “The most intense, the most focus that I’ve ever seen President Biden is in advance of these engagements with President Xi,” the official said. And the extent to which their personal relationship will impact US-China relations overall has yet to be determined. “This summit is formalizing and institutionalizing a major strategic shift of the region,” explained a third senior administration official. “The Biden administration has always been clear that talking is best, they will keep showing up, and communication is necessary.

… The earth is screaming at us," Washington state Governor Jay Inslee said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." Washington state is switching to electric-powered ferries and stopping the sale of internal combustion cars after 2035, said Inslee. Palm Springs Mayor Grace Elena Garner, who also spoke on "This Week," highlighted the need for further resources from the federal government. She emphasized more funds for housing development are needed to ensure residents don't have to live outside in worsening environmental conditions. The U.S. must lead the climate fight "not just from a moral standpoint, but from [its] self-interest standpoint," Inslee said.

That’s a question that swirls through Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” a live-action, you-go-girl fantasia about the world’s most famous doll. The movie opens with a prelude that parodies the “dawn of man” sequence in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (with girls, not ape-men), and then shifts to Barbie Land, a kaleidoscopic wonderland. There, Gerwig sets the scene and tone with Barbie (Margot Robbie) — who calls herself stereotypical Barbie — soon floating out of her Dreamhouse, as if she were being lifted by a giant invisible hand. Written by Gerwig and her partner, Noah Baumbach, the movie introduces Barbie on yet another perfect day in Barbie Land, in which dolls played by humans exist in what resembles a toyland gated community. There, framed by a painted mountain range, Barbie and a diverse group of other Barbies rule, living in homes with few exterior walls.

Phoenix residents were under "extreme heat risk, (an) increase in heat related illnesses, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke," the service warned.
