Three Democratic senators are asking McDonald’s about its menu price hikes in recent years, arguing that the increases are higher than they should be — even with inflation and rising operating costs. McDonald’s prices have raised eyebrows. It also asked whether McDonald’s executives received bonuses or other incentive-based compensation from 2020 to 2024 and whether any incentives were based on executives’ ability to increase per-customer profits. Large corporations “owe consumers transparency when they hike menu prices,” Wyden said in a statement to NBC News. “Fast food chains, like McDonald’s, are raking in profits while families struggle to buy meals that are meant to be affordable and accessible.”

The House task force on the attempted assassinations of former President Donald J. Trump released its first preliminary report Monday, chastising the Secret Service for poor planning and a communications breakdown that resulted in a fatal shooting at Mr. Trump’s rally in Butler, Pa.“Put simply, the evidence obtained by the task force to date shows the tragic and shocking events of July 13 were preventable and should not have happened,” the report said. The 53-page bipartisan report is based on 23 interviews with local law enforcement officials who assisted with security at the rally, thousands of pages of documents from local, state and federal authorities, and testimony from the task force’s public hearing on Sept. 26. Its findings largely hew to the conclusions of three other recent investigations. A Senate inquiry found that no one was in charge of planning and security decisions for the July 13 campaign rally where Mr. Trump was shot; an independent panel reviewing the failures that led to the attempted assassination called on the Secret Service to replace its leadership with people from the private sector and focus almost exclusively on its protective mission; and the Secret Service’s own internal investigation found that complacency had set in among some of the agents charged with securing the rally site.

CNN —More than 100 soccer players from the women’s game have signed an open letter to FIFA, urging the sport’s world governing body to end its sponsorship deal with Saudi oil and gas company Aramco. In April this year, FIFA announced a four-year global partnership with the majority state-owned oil giant, giving it sponsorship rights to the 2026 men’s World Cup and the 2027 Women’s World Cup. “The Saudi authorities trample not only on the rights of women, but on the freedom of all other citizens too,” the letter, addressed to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, said. Last year, it produced an average of 12.8 million barrels of oil a day, far more than any other company. Crowds gathered near the park’s Peter Pan statue, where they placed handwritten letters, teddy bears, balloons, photos and flowers, according to photos shared from the memorial. The scene created what looked like a scrapbook of both the singer’s life and the fans whose lives he touched. The Hyde Park memorial is one of many fan-organized vigils held throughout the weekend, with Payne’s supporters paying tribute to the singer in London, Japan, Australia and US, among others. READING, Pa. — A Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to two life terms without parole on murder convictions in the deaths of her two young children, who were found hanging in the basement of their home five years ago. Snyder displayed no reaction during Thursday’s hearing in Berks County and spoke only to decline to address the court, the Reading Eagle reported. Owen Snyder, 22, the older brother of the slain youngsters, who was 17 at the time of their deaths, called the defendant a “monster” he no longer considered his mother. Lisa Snyder is led into Berks County Court in Reading, Pa., on Nov. 17, 2023. Snyder had told police her son was bullied and had threatened to take his life, but authorities said they found no evidence to support her claim.

An independent panel reviewing the failures that led to the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump in July called on the Secret Service to replace its leadership with people from the private sector and focus almost exclusively on its protective mission. Those include the failure of the Secret Service to secure a nearby building where a rooftop would-be assassin fired eight shots toward Mr. Trump. That and other security lapses, members of the panel said, result from an absence of “critical thinking” among agents and supervisors. The panel was particularly struck by a “lack of ownership” conveyed by the agents it interviewed. A panel convened in 2014 after a man scaled the White House fence and entered the mansion made similar proposals.
