Hong Kong CNN —Factory activity among China’s private firms expanded at the fastest pace in three years, a private gauge showed Monday, suggesting healthier domestic and international demand for Chinese goods. The Caixin manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 51.8 in June, up from 51.7 in May, according to a statement from S&P Global, which compiled the survey. The Caixin survey covers more export-oriented and consumer-related companies. The official PMI, however, is tilted more towards manufacturers that produce industrial materials — including steel, cement, and chemical — making them more vulnerable to a slowdown in fixed-asset investments. Analysts believe that the current data reflects an economic reality characterised by strong exports and consumption, but softer investment.

With stocks set to close out a strong first half of 2024, investors have just one more key inflation hurdle to clear in the week ahead: May's personal expenditure report. Next week's personal consumption expenditure data, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, could show whether that overall picture is intact. May's consumer price index, for example, showed no increase from the prior month. Last month's producer price index , a measure of wholesale prices, unexpectedly dropped from the previous reading. Cramer suggested that bullish investors sometimes want incompatible scenarios — weakness in the economy but not in the companies they're invested in. The weaker-than-expected Manufacturing PMI released on Monday was a big overhang on the market, with investors concerned about the strength of the economy. Cramer said these results could be a harbinger of interest rate cuts and also reminded investors that Friday's nonfarm payroll report for the month of May is vital data for the Fed. "When you read the statement for the Manufacturing PMI, it is weak, weaker than feared. "And that's ultimately what could sway the Fed — particularly if we get any sort of job weakness on Friday's numbers."

"With yields holding firm at elevated levels , large caps continue to outperform small caps. Hopes for multiple rate cuts from the Federal Reserve this year have dimmed after recent inflation readings showed signs of stickiness. An economy that is growing more slowly, but with cooler inflation, could be the combination small caps need. While [gross domestic product] and the labor market seem to be slowing, earnings are accelerating,” wrote the Bank of America analysts. That means an improving manufacturing cycle but slowing services can lead to a divergence between market performance and economic performance. “We’ve witnessed records repeatedly break in both stock and housing markets over the past year.”In addition to unrelentingly high home prices, the housing market is also grappling with a chronic lack of homes on the market and elevated mortgage rates. Put together, it has resulted in a tough housing market, especially first-time buyers.
