An aide to the Hungarian PM was criticized after suggesting Hungary wouldn't have resisted a Russian invasion. He referred back to a 1956 uprising in Budapest, which the Soviet Union brutally repressed. He said it was "irresponsible" to resist, citing the number of dead in the Ukraine war. He said this was because Hungary had tried and failed to resist the Soviet Union in 1956. Viktor Orbán is Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest ally in the European Union, a position that has put him strongly out of favor in the bloc.

New York CNN —McDonald’s has become notorious for its broken ice cream machines — there’s even an independent website that monitors broken McFlurry machines. Wendy’s is selling small-sized, $1 Frosty frozen dairy desserts until September 30 — and it’s collaborating with McBroken, which reports which McDonald’s locations have broken ice cream machines. Nearly 15% of McDonald’s ice cream machines are broken as of Thursday, according to McBroken’s data. McBroken was created a few years ago by Rashiq Zahid, who was also frustrated by the lack of working ice cream machines at McDonald’s. Protesters demonstrate outside the Labour Party conference venue in Liverpool against the withdrawal of the winter fuel allowance, on September 23, 2024. “It has felt a bit blunt,” a Labour Member of Parliament admitted after Starmer’s speech Tuesday, summing up the sentiment across much of conference. Unfortunately, the realities of governing are beginning to bite the Labour Party – and it is likely he will need to show some returns far sooner. Starmer’s speech was was light on fresh content but a heckler was calmly removed and the key messages were confidently delivered. But a premiership can only survive on doom and gloom for so long, and patience is already wearing thin among much of the wider party.

Gold, traditionally perceived as a haven, has climbed roughly 30% this year, outperforming the benchmark S&P 500 index’s 20% gain. Fresh consumer confidence data on Tuesday indicated that Americans are feeling pessimistic about the US economy and future of the job market. JPMorgan Chase researchers said in a note on Monday that they expect the yellow metal to continue running toward their 2025 target price of $2,850 an ounce as the Fed brings down rates. Silver, another precious metal that tends to move in tandem with gold, has jumped roughly 34% this year, outperforming the yellow metal. New moves from China to revive its economy also has the potential to lift precious metals, said Rhind.

As a citizen of three countries, the United States, Poland, and Portugal, I am acutely aware of cultural differences. My children and I live in the United States but have visited Europe several times. Children often get free admission to museumsIn the United States, visiting a museum, aquarium or zoo can easily cost more than $100. In Europe, children often receive free admission to museums or have to pay a nominal fee equivalent to a few dollars. In Europe, I found that there are often great fares for families traveling together by train or substantial discounts for children.

The Marriner S. Eccles Federal Reserve building in Washington, DC, on June 25. Ting Shen/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesAfter all the hype that’s been brewing for over a year, you might think that once the Federal Reserve finally cuts interest rates the economy will look and feel completely different. Sure, the stock market could have some big swings the second the Fed releases its interest rate decision at 2 pm ET on Wednesday and when Fed Chair Jerome Powell speaks a half hour later. Mortgage rates and the interest rates Americans pay on a variety of loans will quickly drop as well. That’s because when the Fed lowers or raises rates, it takes a while for the full effect of those moves to be felt across the economy.

The news from Bloomberg that billionaire Point72 founder and legendary stockpicker Steve Cohen will no longer trade his book for the $35 billion fund Tuesday is paradoxically both shocking and expected. Of the big multi-strategy managers, the fact Cohen was still managing a book set him apart from his main competitors. Will there be another Steve Cohen? Cohen launched SAC with $20 million in 1992; new funds today need exponentially more to justify leaving seats at funds like Point72. Fictional hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod, played by Damian Lewis, was loosely based on Steve Cohen.

This month, he'll start building a long-short equity division called Longaeva Partners inside Balyasny and exclusively managing the multistrategy hedge fund's capital, according to people familiar with the matter. "He was very coachable and progressed at a much faster rate than a lot of other, newer portfolio managers," Boyle said. "Peter was good at keeping his emotions out of his portfolio," Boyle said. At Balyasny, Goodwin will effectively have his own unit, though he'll be under the flagship Atlas Enhanced umbrella and operate on BAM's platform, including access to its technology, risk management, hiring, and human resources capabilities. The allure of such a setup is more time to spend on investing, which Longaeva will do exclusively with Balyasny money for now.

New York CNN —Union members at Boeing overwhelmingly rejected a proposed a four-year contract with the troubled aircraft manufacturer, authorizing the first strike at the company in 16 years, said the International Association of Machinist (IAM) union. It also increased job security for union members, because Boeing promised to build its next commercial jet, which has yet to be announced, at a unionized plant. But 95% of members of the IAM union voted against the deal. In a separate vote 96% voted to authorize a strike, easily clearing the two-thirds threshold needed to approve a walkout.
