Shares of Uber rose more than 5% on Monday after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced Friday that the ride-hailing company has been selected to join the S&P 500. Analysts at Oppenheimer reiterated their outperform rating on the stock and raised their price target to $75 per share from $65. Members of the index must have positive earnings in the most recent quarter and over the prior four quarters in total, according to S&P's rules. Uber also has a market cap of about $118 billion, which surpasses the S&P's criteria that companies must have an adjusted market cap of at least $14.5 billion.

Rising rates and the possibility of a recession on the horizon have created a "mixed picture" for equity markets, according to one strategist — but several companies can look forward to markedly stronger earnings growth in the next year. "But, if you're looking for significant earnings expansion, I suspect, at a market level, that's probably less likely. The earnings growth rate for the S & P 500 was 3.7% year-on-year – the first quarter with year-on-year growth since the third quarter of 2022, the data showed. "What Eli Lilly is going to do with their weight loss drug is not dependent on whether the rates are 5.2% or 4.8%. The recent sharp drawdown in stocks presents a buying opportunity for those stocks that are positioned to withstand a double whammy of higher interest rates and an economic slowdown, according to Goldman Sachs. "Although we expect headwinds to discount rates and balance sheets to persist, we would view a substantial further downgrade to the growth outlook as a buying opportunity," David Kostin, Goldman's chief U.S. equity strategist, said in a note to clients. Therefore, Goldman believes many cyclical stocks, or those with a high sensitivity to the economy, shouldn't suffer. "We therefore remain wary of long-duration and highly levered stocks but think investors should treat cyclical sell-offs as a buying opportunity," Kostin said. Last week's hiccup in the stock market rally could expand into a seasonal slump, according to Wall Street technical analysts. The S & P 500 fell 2.27% last week for its worst week since March, closing at 4,478.03.
