New York CNN —Companies are sitting on a lot less cash than they were last year, largely because they’re spending it on share buybacks and corporate dividends. What’s happening: A new report from Moody’s Investors Service finds that nonfinancial companies’ corporate cash declined 12% last year to $2 trillion. But debt was flat year over year, meaning that companies didn’t use much of their cash reserves to pay down outstanding loans. Now that it’s more expensive to borrow, companies in the US should reconsider the amount of money they’re spending on buybacks, he added. Preventing companies from repurchasing their own shares, they argue, would free corporate cash to invest in growth and raise wages instead.

Pickleball injuries may cost Americans $377 million in health care costs this year, accounting for 5% to 10% of total unexpected medical costs, UBS analysts estimated in a report Monday. From 2010-2019, 86% of emergency department visits due to pickleball injuries occurred in people over 60 years old, according to the medical study. Around 60% of pickleball injuries are sprains, strains and fractures. The analysts estimated that there will be around 67,000 emergency room visits, 366,000 outpatient visits and 9,000 outpatient surgeries related to pickleball injuries this year. According to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association trade group, pickleball has grown from 3.5 million players in 2019 to 8.9 million in 2022.

June 16 (Reuters) - Health insurer Humana Inc (HUM.N) joined larger rival UnitedHealth (UNH.N) in warning of a jump in medical costs this year due to higher-than-expected demand for surgeries and other medical procedures. Humana on Friday also pointed to elevated demand for outpatient surgeries and dental services, as well as strong inpatient demand in recent weeks, a trend it said was diverging from historical seasonality patterns. The health insurer generated more than 80% of its premiums and services revenue in 2022 from offering government-backed Medicare plans. UnitedHealth had flagged higher costs earlier this week following an increase in surgeries among older adults, wiping out billions in the market capitalization of health insurers including Humana. On the flip side, the rise in medical procedures is expected to help hospital operators and medical device makers, especially those in the orthopedic space.

For the past few months, my feet have been sheathed in socks and slippers — like cave fish, hidden from the light. In preparation, I carefully inspect every inch of my feet to ensure they are ready to show to the world. Suddenly swollen feet can indicate high blood pressure, said Dr. Kirk Geter, the chief of podiatry at Howard University Hospital. Swelling can also be a sign of gout or kidney problems, Dr. Geter added, while tingling and numbness in the feet can indicate diabetes. So each day, you should inspect the bottoms and tops of your feet — as well as between your toes — and wiggle your toes around, Dr. Geter said.

Opkit is a startup that helps telehealth companies verify and process patient health insurance. Software engineers Sherwood Callaway and Justin Ko first met as early employees at the fintech startup Brex and became fast friends. As more telehealth companies were popping up after the pandemic, they often had issues with quickly processing patient health insurance for care, Callaway told Insider. Opkit also offers providers an insurance dashboard, that allows telehealth employees to perform eligibility checks or inquiries to insurance companies about specific patients' plans. "Opkit was our first experience doing venture fundraising, and Y Combinator really helped us make connections with investors," said Callaway.

SAO PAULO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The death toll from heavy rains that devastated coastal areas of Brazil's southeastern Sao Paulo state rose to 44 people, according to a state government statement on Tuesday. The city of Sao Sebastiao bore the brunt of the human toll, with 43 reported deaths. [1/5] Firefighters work to find victims in one of the landslides sites after severe rainfall at Barra do Sahy in Sao Sebastiao, Brazil, February 21, 2023. Sao Paulo state Governor Tarcisio de Freitas said the Navy would build a field hospital for victims starting Thursday. The deluge happened as tourists thronged to Brazil's beaches during the annual Carnival holiday, likely making the human toll much worse.

Shahab Mahboubian performs 30 to 40 cosmetic limb-lengthening surgeries a year. The only field in medicine that uses all of these tools is orthopedic surgery, so it seemed like the right fit. I specialized in limb-lengthening surgery specifically because I wanted to do something that was different from everybody else. People that undergo limb-lengthening surgery are from all walks of life, and many used COVID lockdowns to recover post-surgery. I would say 80% to 85% of my cosmetic limb-lengthening patients are men, and 15% to 20% are women.
Medical device makers, like many manufacturers, have faced challenges over the last year from inflationary supply chain costs, staffing shortages and the strong dollar impacting sales overseas. However, since 2007 the device sector ETF has averaged a gain of 14% per year, 6 percentage points better than the broader market index over the same period. More than 60% of analysts rate the shares a buy, with a mean price target implying 34% upside. Nearly 90% of analysts rate the stock a buy, with mean price target of $53, implying more than 30% upside. BTIG analysts Marie Thibault and Ryan Zimmerman think that M & A could be another catalyst for the medical device sector in 2023, with robotic surgery players likely to be of particular interest.
Actor Jeremy Renner broke more than 30 bones in his body when he was run over by a snowplow earlier this month, he said in an Instagram post Saturday. Neighbors helped as he waited 40 minutes for first responders to arrive on the scene due to weather conditions, Balaam said. Renner suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries, his representative, Sam Mast, said at the time, adding that Renner was in critical but stable condition when he was treated in the ICU. “Outside my brain fog in recovery, I was very excited to watch episode 201 with my family at home,” he said. The actor, who is a two-time Oscar nominee, had previously posted images and video on Instagram of him standing next to snowplows and rolling through icy terrain in a Jeep.

Orthopedic surgeons have quite a bit of time between cases, and sometimes, to take the edge off, we would talk in the surgeon’s lounge about anything but work. I have a good surgeon friend named Steve Long who is, like me, nuts about cars, and oftentimes we would talk about our favorites. One day, we happened on the BMW Z8.
Actor Jeremy Renner is out of the hospital and back at home after he was run over by a snowplow earlier this month and sustained serious injuries. Renner, 52, has been keeping fans updated on his progress since he was hospitalized on New Year’s Day following the accident. Renner had blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries from the accident, his representative, Sam Mast, said earlier this month. Renner went to speak to a family member when the snowplow started to roll toward him. Neighbors helped Renner while he waited 40 minutes for first responders to arrive because of the weather conditions, Balaam said.
Ontario has some private healthcare providers but they are a small part of the health system and provide relatively few public surgeries. Critics worry sharply expanding their footprint will take staff from the pool of public health workers. In 2021, the Commonwealth Fund ranked Canada's health system tenth out of 11 rich countries. Ontario's government said it is following the lead of provinces such as Alberta, which contracts with private providers and said last fall it will fund more surgeries in private clinics. No one disputes Ontario's health system faces serious challenges.

A woman sued Tesla for $2 million after she was struck by a car driven by a worker at a dealership. Rakshinda Parvez was waiting while her family test-drove a Tesla, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit claimed she suffered multiple injuries, but Tesla disputed her account of the incident. She walked behind a Tesla driven by an employee that had stopped at the parking lot exit, an amended complaint filed in November stated. The car then reversed "suddenly and without warning," resulting in concussion as well as neurological, disc, and other orthopedic injuries to Parvez, the lawsuit alleged.
Actor Jeremy Renner was run over by his own snow plow while moving snow near his home near Reno, Nevada. The incident happened while the actor was trying clear his own car, driven by a family member, from the snow. "There was about three feet that we just received on top of whatever else they'd received prior to this big snowstorm, but three feet of fresh snow," Balaam said. Renner used his own plow, described as a PistenBully that weighs more than 14,000 pounds, to extract the car from the snow. Balaam described Renner as a "great neighbor" who often cleared the roads for others after snowstorms and was a beloved member of the community.
