The attack happened in Kurram, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where sectarian clashes between majority Sunni Muslims and minority Shiites have killed dozens of people in recent months. “I think other people were also firing at the convoy of vehicles from nearby open farm field,” he said. Ibne Ali Bangash, a relative of one of the victims, described the convoy attack as the saddest day in Kurram’s history. Dozens of people from both sides have been killed since July when a land dispute erupted in Kurram that later turned into general sectarian violence. Pakistan is tackling violence in the northwest and southwest, where militants and separatists often target police, troops and civilians.

China’s recent breach of the innermost workings of the U.S. telecommunications system reached far deeper than the Biden administration has described, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee said on Thursday, with hackers able to listen in on telephone conversations and read text messages. “The barn door is still wide open, or mostly open,” the Democratic chairman, Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, a former telecommunications executive, said in an interview on Thursday. and other investigators believed that China’s hackers used stolen passwords to focus mostly on the system that taps telephone conversations and texts under court orders. It is administered by a number of the nation’s telecommunications firms, including the three largest — Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. But in recent days, investigators have discovered how deeply China’s hackers had moved throughout the country by exploiting aging equipment and seams in the networks connecting disparate systems.

Ukraine says Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile overnight targeting Dnipro city in the central-east of the country, which, if confirmed, would be the first time Moscow has used such a missile in the war. It said an intercontinental ballistic missile was fired at Dnipro city along with eight other missiles, and that the Ukrainian military shot down six of them. The attack comes two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a revised nuclear doctrine that formally lowers the threshold for the country's use of nuclear weapons. Ukraine on Tuesday fired several American-supplied longer-range missiles and reportedly fired U.K.-made Storm Shadows on Wednesday into Russia. While the doctrine envisions a possible nuclear response by Russia to a conventional strike, it is formulated broadly to avoid a firm commitment to use nuclear weapons and keep Putin's options open.

Most Americans are concerned about what may happen to Social Security when its retirement trust fund crosses a projected 2033 depletion date, according to a new Bankrate survey. Nearly three-quarters, 73%, of non-retired adults and 71% retired adults say they worry they won't receive their benefits if the trust fund runs out. That includes 81% of working baby boomers and 82% of Gen Xers who are worried they may not receive their benefits at retirement age if the trust fund is depleted. Social Security relies on trust funds to supplement its monthly benefit payments that currently reach more than 72.5 million beneficiaries, including Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries. Ann Wang | ReutersThis report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our international markets newsletter. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. Even though Nvidia's third-quarter revenue soared 94% on an annual basis, it's a slower pace than Nvidia's growth in the previous three quarters, when sales rose 122%, 262%, and 265%, respectively, as CNBC's Kif Leswing notes. The same goes for Nvidia's forward guidance: A growth of around 70% for current-quarter sales, compared with a year earlier. It appears that investors have enjoyed Nvidia's astounding performance for so long they've become desensitized to it.

Sims said the new venue opens up lucrative partnership opportunities, and the naming rights agreement is a prominent one. Etihad Park is being built with private funds. Etihad Park isn't the only new addition to Queens. As for why the new stadium name is Etihad Park and not "stadium" or "arena," it's an homage to New York City's iconic green spaces, according to Sims.

It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers,” Brolin added. “Dune: Part 2” was widely well-received when it was released in February, offering a much more action-packed movie than the slower-paced world-builder that “Part One” delivered. The film stars Brolin, Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Christopher Walken, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem, among others.

The Justice Department on Wednesday asked the judge in its antitrust case against Google to force the company to sell its Chrome browser. "Advertisers would find competitors for their business, rather than needing to pay a dominant search engine." When you open Chrome and type something into the search bar at the top, these words are automatically transformed into a Google Search. And when there's an option for users, Google pays partners billions of dollars to set its search engine as the default. For instance, if most people click on the third result, Google's Search engine will likely adjust and rank that result higher in the future.

As any recent job-seeker can tell you, hiring has been sluggish for the better part of the year. But good news could be on its way: After many organizations seemed to pause their hiring efforts ahead of the U.S. presidential election, recruiters say they're already seeing an upswing of activity that could extend into the new year. "Now that there is a clear president-elect, we saw the hiring market, especially for the executive-level candidates, open up almost immediately," Boggs tells CNBC Make It. In the week after the election, four of her clients signed offers for new jobs. Job-seeking clients are also seeing an uptick in new roles being posted online, recruiter reach-outs and interviewing activity, she adds.

The stock market has always pulled back when valuations are stretched as they are now, according to Deutsche Bank macro strategist Henry Allen in a note to clients this week. "[T]urning points can happen quickly, and … when valuations are stretched to start with, there can be limited scope for further gains," Allen noted. "[E]xamples of high returns through history have often been followed by sizeable reversals." The bank cited lofty current readings in the Cyclically Adjusted Price-to-Earnings (CAPE) ratio developed by economist Robert Shiller, arguing that "the CAPE ratio for the S&P 500 has only been higher on two other occasions in the last century" than it is today. "Indeed, on both the occasions the CAPE ratio has got as high as it is today, there was then a significant correction."

I moved to Italy in my 20s after a summer study abroad in Rome during my senior year of college. The most shocking cultural differences are the little things in daily lifeA big part of the "la dolce vita" concept is that life moves slower. If confirmed by the Senate, three key nominees would largely be responsible for executing Trump's "drill, baby, drill" agenda across the federal government. The Interior Department leases millions of acres of public lands and waters for oil and gas drilling. The oil and gas industry is pushing the Trump administration to issue a new five-year offshore-leasing program. Woods of ExxonMobil told Semafor last week that the Trump administration should keep regulations to curb methane emissions from oil and gas infrastructure. But Trump attacked electric vehicles on the campaign trail, adopting the oil and gas lobby's messaging.

Impoundment has been floated as one way that Trump could singlehandedly enact DOGE's recommended cuts to the federal budget.
