Graham, acting on behalf of the Trump campaign, was working to encourage Pillen to call a special legislative session at which lawmakers could consider changing the state's apportionment of electoral votes, the source said. Nebraska allocates its electoral votes by congressional district. That one electoral vote could prove decisive. Maine is the only other state that does not have a winner-take-all system for electoral votes. The Democratic state House majority leader has said the state should consider switching to a winner-take-all electoral vote system itself as a counter if Nebraska moves to change its system.

Trump won it in 2016. Biden won it in 2020. Top bosses at Berkshire Hathaway are usually tight-lipped about their market outlook, but recent investment actions from the executives are saying a lot. News broke earlier this week that Ajit Jain, the conglomerate's insurance chief for nearly 40 years, sold more than half of his Berkshire stake worth $139 million. That marked the biggest sale of Berkshire stock by the 73-year-old vice chairman of insurance operations since he was hired by Warren Buffett in 1986. He believes it would be "value-destroying" if he overpaid for Berkshire shares. But the magnitude of the sales could also suggest a bearish attitude toward the market and stock valuations.

Berkshire has sold more than 174.7 million shares of the Charlotte-based bank for $7.2 billion, with 858.2 million shares remaining, or 11.1% of shares outstanding. Nebraska voters will weigh two different abortion-related constitutional amendments this fall, with the secretary of state's office certifying both measures Friday to appear on the ballot. “Barring any legal challenges, this November general election ballot will host two ballot measures that appear in direct conflict with each other, which could be the first time this has happened in Nebraska’s history,” Secretary of State Bob Evnen said in a statement. Nebraska law currently bans abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for rape, incest and saving the mother’s life. If both amendments pass, the one with the most votes prevails. Democrats are hoping the ballot measures will help boost turnout in a critical presidential election cycle.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway recently debuted a new stake in beauty retailer Ulta Beauty , a deep value bet that validated a belief that the stock was significantly oversold. The Omaha-based conglomerate unveiled a $266 million bet on Ulta Beauty in a regulatory filing late Wednesday, prompting the shares to climb 11% the next day. Many view the purchase as a classic value buy after the beauty supply chain's stock suffered a big sell-off this year amid slowing demand and increased competition. Each has recorded at least 18 extremely hot days this year. San Antonio, Texas, experienced 54 extremely hot days, 16 more than its 2013-to-2023 average, while Nashville, Tennessee has logged 23, also 16 days above average. “The overall trend is clear: major American cities have experienced a significant rise in the number of extremely hot days,” said Tucker Landesman, a senior researcher with the International Institute for Environment and Development. Of the 50 cities, only three — Los Angeles, Omaha and Kansas City — did not experience an increase in extremely hot days over the five-decade period. “As the world’s richest country, the United States has the resources and technology needed to address extreme heat,” Landesman said.

This week's violent global market meltdown started in Japan — where Warren Buffett has big investments — but the damage was limited. The Nikkei 225 index , a benchmark for Japanese stocks, plunged 12.4% on Monday, its worst day since "Black Monday" in 1987, triggering a domino effect globally. The stocks Buffett holds cratered as much as 30% initially, but bounced back by the end of the week along with the broader market. The Japanese trading houses also reported second-quarter earnings earlier this week, mostly exceeding analyst expectations and maintaining their full-year guidance. Away from Japan, Buffett was in a selling mood in the second quarter.

Bernstein pointed out that Berkshire built most of its Apple position at a 15 times multiple, while selectively adding at 20 times earnings or below and trimming at 30 times earnings and above. The selling activity picked up significantly last quarter though with Berkshire offloading more than $75 billion in stocks in the period and raising the conglomerate's cash pile to a record $277 billion. Many Buffett followers view the accelerated sale of his top holdings as a pessimistic call on markets and the economy. Buffett was selling stocks last quarter when the S & P 500 rose to an all-time high in anticipation that the U.S. would skirt a recession while squashing inflation. When Buffett trimmed the Apple stake by 13% in the first quarter, he hinted at the Berkshire annual meeting in May that it was for tax reasons. But the magnitude of this selling last quarter suggests it could be more than just a tax-saving strategy.

U.S. stocks fell sharply Monday as part of a global selloff fueled by mounting recession fears among investors. Further roiling global markets is unusual currency trading out of Japan. The S&P 500 — a measure of the broad U.S. stock market — was down about 2% in early trading, putting it 7.5% below the index's all-time high close on July 16. In fact, you'd be wise to ignore short-term ups and downs in the stock market altogether — at least according to Buffett. Global stock markets are on the brink of a major correction, triggered by concerns of an economic slowdown. Buffett also started selling his second biggest holding Bank of America in July.
