CNN —The wildfire in Texas has already killed two people, demolished hundreds of structures and obliterated thousands of cattle as it became the biggest blaze in the state’s history. Some 8 million people across the Central Plains are under “red flag” warnings and temperatures are above normal in the Texas Panhandle. So far, the Smokehouse Creek Fire has spread across more than 1 million acres and has become the biggest Texas wildfire on record. And the fire is just one of five blazes currently scorching the Texas Panhandle, destroying as many as 500 structures. Sunday’s fire weather threat will be greatest for the Texas Panhandle and western Texas, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said Icon of the Seas is 24% more energy efficient than required for ships designed today. Royal Caribbean International is clearly pitching Icon of the Seas to a market that goes beyond cruising.

GOOD MATERIAL, by Dolly AldertonAndy, the 35-year-old struggling comedian who narrates most of Dolly Alderton’s new novel, “Good Material,” has been freshly dumped by his ex, Jen, for mysterious reasons. Like Rob in Nick Hornby’s “High Fidelity,” an obvious inspiration, Andy knows his relationship had its problems. In the process, maybe he can get to the bottom of why the rest of his life has derailed, too. His friends won’t meet for impromptu drinks because they have to get up early to take care of their children. In “Good Material,” as in all of her writing, Alderton excels at portraying nonromantic intimate relationships with tenderness and authenticity.

BOSTON (AP) — Andris Nelsons has agreed to a rolling contract as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The 45-year-old Latvian has been the BSO's music director since the 2014-15 season, when he began a five-year contract. That was replaced by an eight-year deal through 2021-22 and in October 2020 a three-year extension through the the 2024-25 season. The BSO said Thursday Nelsons also had been given an additional title as head of conducting at Tanglewood, the music and educational center that is the orchestra's summer home. Nelson also has been music director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra since 2017-18.

Much of 20th-century classical music owes a deep thanks to jazz. And while on paper, the Philadelphia Orchestra’s concert at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday night was organized for a festival at the hall, Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice, the subtext was American jazz. All three of the composers on the program (Stravinsky, Weill and Gershwin) loved and, to one extent or another, made references to the style in their music. Weill, who left Europe for the United States after the fall of the Weimar Republic, was also steeped in jazz. The orchestra staked out rhythmic details with crystalline precision and saw each phrase through with patience and a rich sound.
