It came hours after the Israeli parliament outlawed a key United Nations aid agency in a move that could throttle the supply of medicine, food and education in the devastated territory. Gaza airstrike kills dozensThe strike hit a five-story building in the northern city of Beit Lahia housing some 200 people, according to the Gaza government media office. The Israel Defense Forces did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday's airstrike from NBC News. The law bans UNRWA, the U.N.'s Palestinian aid agency, from operating inside Israel or having any contact with Israeli authorities. But Israel has long criticized UNRWA, alleging it has been infiltrated by Hamas and intensifying that pushback after Oct. 7.

The photo, taken in Jabalya on Friday, shows residents of the refugee camp who tried to leave the area after being forced by the Israeli military to evacuate amid its ongoing ground operation there. The photo was first shared on an Israeli Telegram channel; while it is unclear who took it, several of the men in the picture told CNN Israeli soldiers were photographing them as they were being detained. They were insulting us during that time, calling us names, laughing and taking pictures,” the 27-year old told CNN. Jouri’s father Mohamad Abu Ward told CNN he was forced to strip to his underwear and was held for eight hours alongside Jouri. “Individuals suspected of involvement in terrorist activity are being detained and questioned,” the IDF told CNN in a statement.

It was exactly the kind of rhetoric that the Harris campaign believes could prompt moderate voters and disaffected Republicans to choose the vice president. Harris was in red-state Texas on Friday to highlight hardline GOP abortion policies she warns could spread countrywide if Trump wins. The CNN Poll of Polls shows no clear leader nationally with Harris at 48% and Trump at 47%. Harris’ rally will provide an emphatic exclamation point for an increasingly important theme of her campaign — that Trump represents an existential threat to American democracy. Both Trump and Harris are targeting strategic sectors of their core electorates in the final days.

CNN —Israel’s parliament has voted to ban a nearly eight-decade-old United Nations agency that provides essential services for Palestinian refugees, a move that could have devastating consequences for millions of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. The move is expected to severely restrict the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from operating in territories Israel occupies. In the Gaza Strip, which has been ravaged by a devastating Israeli war for more than a year, UNRWA serves some 1.7 million Palestinian refugees. Omar Al-Qattaa/AFP/Getty ImagesThe agency provides a wide range of aid and services to Palestinian refugees and their descendants, including shelter, healthcare, food and education. It is unclear who would assume assistance for the millions of Palestinian refugees who rely on UNRWA, if it wasn’t able to.

Harris’ campaign seized on the attacks on Puerto Rico, quickly clipping the video and posting it on social media channels. TEHRAN, IRAN - OCTOBER 26: A view of Iran's capital, Tehran, following the Israeli army's announcement of strikes targeting 'military objectives' in Iran on October 26, 2024. Israeli army stated, 'In response to the ongoing attacks against Israel in recent months, precise strikes are currently being conducted on military targets in Iran.' A semi-official Iranian news agency vowed a "proportional reaction" to the Israeli strikes. Tensions between Iran and Israel have grown rapidly since the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Iran-backed Hamas. Israel's military, signalling it did not expect an immediate Iranian response, said there was no change to public safety restrictions across the country.

Energy generation and storage revenue soared 52% to $2.38 billion, while services and other revenue, which includes revenue from non-warranty repairs of Tesla vehicles, jumped 29% to $2.79 billion. Earlier this month, Tesla reported third-quarter vehicle deliveries of 462,890. While deliveries increased 6% from a year earlier, they fell shy of analysts’ expectations and followed two straight quarters of year-over-year declines. “Despite ongoing macroeconomic conditions, we expect to achieve slight growth in vehicle deliveries in 2024,” the company said in its earnings deck Wednesday.

A trove of 2,584 silver coins from the time of the Norman Conquest has been bought in the United Kingdom for more than $5 million — making it the country's highest-value discovery ever made by treasure hunters. The coins were purchased by the U.K.’s South West Heritage Trust, an independent organization that supports historical sites, with funding from two charities, the National Lottery and the Art Fund. The South West Heritage Trust's curator of archaeology, Amal Khreisheh, holds one of the uncovered Norman pennies. The coins were likely to have been buried for safekeeping, a common method in the 11th century. That they were never dug up by their owner suggests to historians that they may have been lost or abandoned because of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest.

Lost Silk Road cities mapped using LiDAR remote sensing
  + stars: | 2024-10-23 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
CNN —Lost for centuries, two cities lay buried, nearly 5 kilometers (3 miles) apart, underneath grassy pastures in the mountains of Uzbekistan. “It’s a really different environment up there,” Frachetti said of the newly discovered Silk Road settlements. However, the newfound highland cities were too big to simply be trading posts or Silk Road stopovers, Frachetti and his colleagues believe. The research marked the first time that light detection and ranging (LiDAR) equipment had been used in the region for archaeological purposes. Using drone-borne light detection and ranging equipment, archaeologists have mapped two abandoned cities in the mountains of Uzbekistan.

As Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance campaigns across the country, his wife, Usha Vance, has been a near-constant presence by his side. Reporters huddled under the wing of JD Vance’s campaign plane often get a glimpse of a book's dust cover as Usha Vance climbs the towable stairs or stands on the tarmac. Though she’s a fixture on the campaign trail, Vance has not occupied a forward-facing public role like other political spouses. As JD Vance has noted on the campaign trail, she left her corporate law firm following the senator’s nomination for vice president in July. Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —In the city of Kherson, southern Ukraine, civilians have started to hope for heavy rain – the only weather conditions that prevent Russian drones from flying overhead, they say. Today, the threat of occupation still looms just across the river, where Russian military positions are literally within sight. Russia has been repeatedly accused of targeting Ukrainian civilians by Kyiv, its Western allies, the International Criminal Court and the United Nations. The Israeli military reservist returned a different person, traumatized by what he had witnessed in the war against Hamas in the strip, his family told CNN. The Israeli military has said it is providing care for thousands of soldiers who are suffering from PTSD or mental illnesses caused by trauma during the war. Israeli soldiers who fought in the enclave told CNN they witnessed horrors the outside world can never truly comprehend. For many soldiers, the war in Gaza is a fight for Israel’s survival and must be won by any means. There was a “very strong collective attitude” of distrust among Israeli soldiers toward the Palestinians in Gaza, especially at the outset of the war, the medic said.

Seoul, South Korea AP —South Korean intelligence has found that North Korea has dispatched 12,000 troops including special operation forces to support Russia’s war against Ukraine, news reports said Friday, a development that could bring a third country into the war and intensify a standoff between North Korea and the West. North Korea has 1.2 million troops, one of the largest militaries in the world, but it lacks actual combat experience. Many experts question how much the North Korean troop dispatch would help Russia, citing North Korea’s outdated equipment and shortage of battle experiences. The statement said participants of the meeting agreed that North Korea’s troop dispatch poses a grave security threat to South Korea and the international community. Outside officials and experts say North Korea in exchange possibly received badly needed food and economic aid and technology assistance aimed at upgrading Kim’s nuclear-armed military.
